Talking about light radius and scaryness.. Anyone played Doom 3? God damn that was scary.. it was so dark and monsters popped out of nowhere.. but it didn't take long when u learned aha that place looks just like the other dark places where the monster always came at me.. and started blasting there already.
It was stupid all the time too dark.
If u played F.E.A.R.. which was also a spooky fps game there was a lot more light used and not all the time in dark.. imo much better game.
Light radius is bad. It makes an unrealistic feeling and makes u wanna put your gamma up. Rather have no light radius and adjust your gamma down if u want darkness.
Cathedrals tend to have a lot of windows there.. if its a day outside there sure is a lot of light. Would u like to go pray to a deep dark Cathedral? Also many of the colors probably come from painted windows they tend to have.

Good point for the Cathedral but the initial location at the start of the Gameplay trailer is called "Forgotten Tombs"
I can't explain the extremist emotions that seem to spring up everywhere based on honest critiques. Just because people think the game should be darker does not mean that said people wish for the game to be completely black. I think the OP has a valid point. I think these posts would become a lot less offensive if people would view this a not a extremist movement, but rather observations and critiques requiring *modest alterations* that people feel will enhance the game, not to mention the fact that this has little or nothing to do with Blizzard as they probably won't even read it. Let's face it, this is an issue that a lot of people are going to notice, hence there will probably be a lot of posts highlighting the issue. Even Blizzard said they foresaw the artwork being a controversial topic. If you are truly a level-headed Diablo fan fighting against irrational "goth" imbeciles, then why does this always ignite into a flame war?
i see where ur going here. ur trying to let everyone know that its already embedded into our minds that the diablo universe, is, in fact gothic and horrific. and i get what ur saying that there might be a big reason WHY blizzard isnt making the game (or atleast the trailer) gothic and horrific.
i mean, IT IS just a few minutes into the game. thats all we know. the narrator of the d3 trailer didnt even go into detail about the "gothic" shit. seemed like all they wanted us to see, were the combat styles and the hacking and slashing, and there might be a reason for that, but we dont know.
u said that trailers are important (especially the first ones that get released) because they give us that initial impression of what the overall game is gonna be like. but tbh, the "initial impression" that the d3 trailer gave me was that it was only gonna be mindless hacking and slashing... no mood-setting, or that gothic, horrific presence.

Thanks I think the OP was talking about the cathedral:) might be wrong I've been so sleepy at work the whole week.

Yeah it could be possible that it is a bit brighter for the demo than it would normally be. If there was that light radius shit you wouldn't see much about the monsters.. just that they come to your light radius and next thing they are dead. I think the monsters crawling on wall was pretty nice feature, I would miss that if there was so dark. The view is a lot wider now than it was in diablo2. You couldn't see very far especially with the 640x480 resolution. I think it is good thing that it isn't too dark so you really get to see the areas and feel all the atmosphere there. Also about the enviromental interacting with you it would be nice to see the places you can use in advantage.
Some of you guys seriously sit there looping the 20 min gameplay video and analye at every single thing? Most people probably didn't even see that gargoyle had no one mentioned it because it gets destroyed in the video during an amazing fight. I know I didn't and thats what makes this so funny heh

Yeah they are zooming every pixel with photoshop looking for flaws. I have no idea where that statue is from.. I sure didn't see it in the first time and not even in the 5th time.. I have to keep looking more i guess.
What I don't get is why people are complaining it's not dark enough, you clearly get a nice dark green in there adding to the creepiness of it, and the stones are big and blocky, but in Diablo lots of stuff was disproportionate
to the characters size, so I don't really get the cartoony feel, except the glowing, which I don't mind, people need to just chill out.
Ya... the green dosnt make it look creepy at all imo just dumb. Since when is their green fog all over the place in a monastery?
Also I agee with Corwyn's post. The theory of the color the devs use is good in theory but when applied to a game just dosnt work IMO.
Here we can see 20 minutes of gameplay footage with a person giving info on the game. They showcase similar things that Blizzard did with Diablo 3. With this video, we get a perfect idea of what the game will be like, what it looks like, what the mood is, etc.
The exact same can be said about Diablo 3. Much like in the Farcry 2 trailer, we only see 20 minutes of the game. The issue, though, is that we can visually see the mood created by the game. We get an idea of what things look like, feel like, etc.
The trailer shows a lot. It shows us what the art style is right at this very moment.
We know for a fact by watching the Farcry 2 trailer that the game isn't going to incorporate a gothic theme, we know it isn't going to have a happy mood, we know this.
In the same way, we know what the areas we saw look like. We know that there is not a gothic theme, we know that there is not a dark mood, we know this.
We can tell from the video that the art direction isn't going to change as the game progresses - that doesn't make sense nor does it fit. We can visually see that gothic is not something they want to touch here. Why?
Because the Tristram Cathedral is the perfect place to show us gothic in D3. It is the dark place in the game.
Don't believe me? Talk to Deckard Cain about that.
You can see what 'It was so dark...." means to Blizzard by viewing the screenshots in that link.
This is why 20 minutes shows a lot.
What an pathetic thing
So lets just make diablo 2 in 3D, yeah that would be nice ... NOT!
D2 with expansion sold more than 15 million copies, if they make it D2 in 3D i guarantee not even half of those people will buy it.
You 10.000 people are not the voice of diablo, you are just a small ignorant minority that voted 5 times with different emails, from the huge over 10 million fans of the game!

Diablo 3 is graphically and artistically great, there needs to be variety in the game, instead of only plain and dark areas!
+Wouldn't it be better and more interesting if from a sunny beautiful day, mist starts covering the screen, rain starts falling, thunders and lightning striking and it starts to darken, instead of constant dark!?
I don't as many people will be signing petitions to keep the graphics as they are simply because they are happy with them and don't need to make a fuss.

If a person in unhappy with a service or something similar they tend to tell about 12 different people. If a person is happy they may tell about 3. What does this mean? The people who complain are the loudest and those that are happy are the softest.
Thats why petitions, especially online petitions, are skewed and shouldn't be counted as random samples.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I notice things like this instantly. I'm not looking for them. They stand there like an elephant in a living room. The cathedral is green. The statues are cute. These are very basic, in-your-face visual facts, not minutiae. These are things Blizzard artists quibble amongst themselves about. It's game design, Dvirus55.

I understand that you think the environment is unimportant to the design, just a container for monsters. That's fine. Some people think they're Napoleon. Far be it from me to get in their way.

Oh that's what I've been saying. The art direction is here to stay, changing it would set back D3 another 4 years.
