I'm sorry I've enabled us to tear each other apart with such a futile poll. Hopefully this stays in the chat section because I am chatting about Diablo 3, the artistic direction, and this community associated with Diablo 3.
I know when I've made a mistake and I can apologize for it too. So here we go, but first let me say; I never disliked the graphics (edit: not that disliking the graphics is bad, we each have our own opinions). In fact, when I first saw the game, I awoke someone because I couldn't contain myself. I admit, after seeing a few choice, edited, pictures that I digressed from my overall ecstatic satisfaction. Though I never contended for change, my boldest statement was that; 'while I found the graphics to be amazing, I wouldn't necessarily turn down a change.'
With enough skills and the right photo manipulation software, one could make Diablo I look magnificent, even by todays standards. Sure, these manipulated images seemed nostalgic of an earlier time, but that earlier time is no more and as I watched the game play video more and more, I found the graphics to be spot on. Just as I felt them to be when I first watched it.
I have watched some posts spiral out of control, and I wouldn't be surprised if some people said some things they'd prefer they hadn't. I know I made quite a few edits to my own posts after identifying them as effusive from a textual perspective.
I'd like to invite anyone else whom may seek redemption to use this post as a platform to do so, if they'd like. Sure, overall there may be a few concerns we can all sympathize with, but we can surely discuss it amicably.
I had never really given diablo3.com much notice until it became diablofans.com. I immediately signed up and hoped for an intelligent, mature, and kind community. Yet, overall, we seem to have torn each other apart. I feel we need to remember what we intended to be; A strong community with a firm foundation that supports Blizzard and their fantastic video game series "Diablo."
Personally, I don't want to be affiliated with a change in art direction. Some of you would like to make the claim, "Yeah, we made that change happen," I'm sure, and while your opinion is valued, there are ways to go about it like a true, professional, diablofan would.
I am open to whatever Blizzard decides, especially knowing that they take their fan base into consideration. I'm not opposed to an artistic shift, and I am certainly not opposed to keeping it as is. After all, before I knew of these possible changes, I knew this was going to be the best game of all time until Diablo IV is released.
Unfavorably, being open to an artistic shift makes me feel like I am less appreciative of Blizzards efforts. It shouldn't, I know, because if the game were stick figures, someone would speak out against it, just as I'm sure someone would defend it; but it should be done professionally.
In summation, I would like to use this post to apologize for any harshness I may have imparted (misconstrued or not), and any negative posts perpetuated by others as a result of inadvertent connotations derived from my posts. We are listed on www.diablo3.com. Let's be the best community associated with this game!
So what- people are passionate about their opinions. nothing new there.
"Personally, I don't want to be affiliated with a change in art direction. Some of you would like to make the claim, "Yeah, we made that change happen," I'm sure, and while your opinion is valued, there are ways to go about it like a true, professional, diablofan would."
Wait... so your saying by some people voicing their opinion it makes them not a true, professional, diablofan? It kind of implies that they are being rude and from what Ive seen it quite the oppisite. Its the people who are defending blizzard that throws insults around and what not. "Personally, I don't want to be affiliated with a change in art direction." Do you imply those who want an art direction are rude and you dont want to be affiliated with them because of that fact? Or is it simply because of all the arguing? So some people posted their opinions then a lot of other people start insulting them defending fan blizzard and a few even call us so called "complainers" quite rude comments.
I also dont understand what your sorry for-an opinion? I really dont see the whole point of this thread. You want people to seek redemption and say sorry for having an opinion? Thats the only real thing I can understand coming from this post. I dont know why your saying sorry. So what now... should people accept you being sorry for having an opinion? I'm confused.
I feel the exact same way. I signed the petition to keep the current look of the game, simply because I don't think blizzard, who actually seem to have spent a lot of time on this very issue before we dug our heads into it, should have to change it.
But... if it could improve on the game why not change it? So really you have no problem with the graphics you just dont want to strain blizzard? They have tons of money and it will only make more people buy the game. I really dont think blizzard has a problem with that.
I have watched the gameplay trailer about 50 million times. I have said it before that I love the overall look of the game, and the only thing I desire is more sharper, or defined, textures. I imagine that it will happen as the game evolves.
One can't be sure whether the complains over Starcraft 2 motivated the change in their graphics, or if Blizzard was going that way from the beginning and people just couldn't contain themselves, like now. (Unless someone can show me proof that Blizzard did say they changed it for the community)
I don't mind a good debate, but people in these boards when they argue something go really overboard. They are completely closed minded and try to latch on to a game that needs to have some change. Diablo 1 was nothing like Diablo 2, and I expect the same for a transition from Diablo 2 to Diablo 3.
Not only that but I have seen people give out the lamest escuse for a graphical change, and one of the worst ones being to make the game feel scary. Which I found Diablo 2 to be far from scary, and the same goes for Diablo 1 as well. I don't mind well thought out posts from people and counter arguments are wonderful, but the fact is that most of these people who post are completely closed minded, say something, and them put their hands up to their ears while reciting "LA LA LA LA LA I CANT HEAR YOU".
That makes the community both immature, rude, and ultimately closed minded to any "radical" or necessary changes that may need to be made.

I could see how the quotes imply I was directing my statement to a post of that exactness, however I was not. Replace the quote with any number of posts connoting rudeness. I was referring to the compounded efforts of those whom expressed there opinions disputatiously.

Yes. Also:

I'm sorry for the way in which I expressed some of my opinions. There were times were I was more combative than effective. As far as anyone else, my simple statement was that if they felt the same, they could do so here. My concern was minimal thread counts in the event any one else felt the same way.

That goes both ways tho because there are those who just freak out if you would dare have an opinion different from what blizzard is making. I think there are a lot more of those. But yes-its a shame the arguement go the way they do and its impossible to have a civil conversation.
Sure, but and even though I like the photoshopped screenshots, I don't think it will be a big deal for me, personally, when I actually get to play the game.
The eerie feeling that diablo 2 sometimes had was only there the first - and maybe second - time you entered an area. Once you'd tried it, you knew exactly what to expect the next time, and thus, that feeling was gone.
Oh you want something new. Yeah I can understand that. You want to see a new take on how an eerie feeling can be achieved? That makes sense!
Also psyfect-i get your post now. Makes a lot more sense. Sorry if I flamed a little too like I did there-actually ive been really good with my flaming. It feels weird trying to be mature and all that.
I honestly believe that 98% of the people that signed the petition to change the graphics, would play it regardless. I know I would. I just felt like some of those photoshopped pics looked really, really, nice, and was something to consider.
This whole forum has brought me to a new concept, which is "Game design by democracy". It's something neat to think about, and I wonder if anyone would ever do it.

Ya that kind of saddens me. The fact people are so passionate but in the end it wouldnt probably matter still I hope it effects blizzards art design. Im sure someone could make a good essay for colledge or something on "Game design by democracy."
Keep it up! One of the great things about being kind is the great feeling that comes along with it! Also, I don't know if you saw my response, it ended up being the last post on the first page.
I like the current graphics, crisp clean new look. Sure it has a few kinks but I don't want it all dark and gloomy. I want to see the action in the background in dungeons, and the detail in things in the outdoors.

Good thing for civil wars!
I know exactly were you are coming from and forgot, my bad, to press that in my statement as well. Just because a change is made to Diablo 3 doesn't mean its for the greater good. The community should have a say in the design of the game that they will end up playing.
At the same time games are a form of artwork, and if you told a painter how to paint his portrait he would kick you in the ass. Granted games may not fall under the same category as painting, but I am just saying.
Basically we need to more debating and less fighting.
Yeah, you're right nzkobc. Most would play it. But a small number of people would drop out. It's called the "margin".
For example, say the Diablo III is worth $60 a person (the joy that he gets in playing the game) and Blizzard is only asking him to pay $50. Awesome, he buys the game.
But, now, say to some hardcore Diablo Fan, the game's value drops to $45 (because he just can't stand the graphics), and Blizzard asks him to pay $50. He doesn't buy the game.
So, I guess there's a spectrum of people who value Diablo III differently. Some people are going to play it hardcore 4 hours a day every day, and some people only a couple of times every month. The margin is the price the Blizzard asks ($50) plus the drop in value that the graphics create ($15). So anyone who values their time playing at less than $65 dollars will not buy the game. Which is different from the $50 it originally was for them.
If the graphics change drops the value by say, $15 for some group of fans, then some of them will drop out, and not buy the game.
NOT ALL, BUT DEFINITELY SOME.
And it matters which type of fans it bothers. If it bothers mainly hardcore, long-established fans of the series, then Blizzard might be doing serious damage to the Diablo brand, and eventually the next game in the series.

The game is also going to draw NEW Blizzard players from WoW and other games that have never played Diablo.
why do u apologise? dont be afraid to say ur opinion (of course if it is urs ;))
I apologized for the manner in which it was said. Also for enabling others to become offended and causing something like a snowball effect (causing them to become mad, then others, etc.), no matter how little fuel I added to the...snowball fire...? It seemed to become cyclical.

... Yeah because slight graphic changes are the same as rape...?
It's being made by many of the same people, they can't help but use a good idea that's made them plenty of money.
Especially the inventory and a few other elements.
