I think that what ranim has put together are some excellent facts , and after reading it all I'd be surprised if at least preemptive cannons arent introduced. no one said you have to use guns, even if they do make an appearance It doesnt mean that they will make a class that uses them. maybe they will have some gun prototypes that are being used by some npcs or something.
Crossbows are too slow in DII, really. In Nox they fired almost instantly and reloaded instantly. I want those crossbows.
I could imagine adapted guns, aka magical guns such as the ones used in Savage. I am just not sure if they would not create some problems in the game, such as competition against other ranged weaponry, or become totally useless.
I agree. Their rate of fire for heavy crossbows is too high (and their damage is too low).
Its easier for me to accept a quick-firing crossbow in the Diablo world, since those weapons are supposed to have reached near-perfection in that era, than a prototype rifle that would fire once every 5 seconds.
I think it would fit.
You'd have 3 types of ranged weaponry. The fast and moderate accuracy to average damage bow. The medium and accurate with moderate to high damage crossbow. The slow and inaccurate yet very powerful rifle.
The reason that weapons like the crossbow worked in Diablo 2 was because you rarely faced many enemys. But at points you would often find yourself doing hit and run tactics. This could work with a cannon if you had some kind of exploding shell or shotgun effect, different methods of the same gun, but much slower than the original type.
This game is going to be much more epic than Diablo 2 though. They've said that over 60 enemies can be on the screen at once. This discredits guns to be honest, but it could also be a strength. It entirely depends on how they impliment the weapon. I think that they could do it, and make it fit perfectly and if they could they should do it, but if it's completely unsure to them, they ought to just abandon the idea of Players having that kind of weaponry, but consider it for NPC's

Only a cho-ko nu had rapid fire.
European crossbows were easier to use than a bow, but very slow.
Doesn't make sense for the time period, and the level of development. Any gun made at the time would fire less than three shots in a minute, so it would be very boring compared to the fast paced action other classes seem to have.
u guys dont have to have guns, ill take em and shoot you guys down in a duel. one shot you..haha jk..well yeah guns would be kinda awkward. than again, WoW had guns, but they were comparative to bows since the guns look pretty old fashioned. if they implemented this in d3 they would have to make it non OP so bows and other weapons are worthless.

I don't get it. It's not like you're gonna end up with uzi's and ak47's. Would it really kill diablo to have a slight foray into pre-colonial firearms?
We already have bows and crossbows... so...
1. on the one hand, how much does it change
2. on the other hand, if it doesnt change much why put it in
go play WoW.

If you get personally attacked by letters through the internet its a good thing to always have a box of tissues and a band-aid around.
The genre is hack and slash, not hack and shoot. Look at Too Human. They tried this, and before it's even released it's being knocked for its terrible gameplay mechanics and "trying to do too much at once" - i.e. guns.
Another example? Hellgate: London. Man, that was a great game that really kept Flagship Studios afloat, huh? Oh wait.
Besides, what kind of magic would guns be imbued with? Multi-shot? Faster firing rate? Shock, explode, freeze, or poison on contact? Hey those sound great, and you know why? Arrows already have those abilities. No need to crowd the game with another item that does the exact same thing.

It's time to welcome the other 80% of the color wheel to a Diablo game.

I think the original post was talking about hand cannons. Besides they would have the bonus of doing the same things as arrows/bolts AND pissing a lot of people off at once!
if it does then it will not be interesting to play

At most put cannons in. I mean really.

Might as well keep the item pool free of "me too"'s.
