Everyone knows that Diablo is a game that is meant to be able to be solo'd. All the monsters that appear in-game should be able to be taken down by a skilled and appropriately level'd and gear'd hero.
However, I think that Diablo 3 should use the inovations of recent MMO's and establish a raiding aspect. Seperate from the rest of the game, those that play online should be able to host a second type of game called RAID. These games will isolate the Act bosses and will be much more strategy intensive than the average encounter. They will be found in a dungeon and it will take anywhere from 10-20 people to down the boss.
Some people might ask what the point of this is. Well, the drops from these raids will have a higher chance of being useful to the hero in reward for the difficulty and time costs of the raid. This is one area of the game that might require a BoE or BoP setup to ensure that people with these drops are the ones that slayed, or are on the level that they can slay, the monster.
(This is to ensure that these items will not be circulated in order to maintain MFings integrity in the game)
This will allow the players to choose whether they want to run the same bosses hundreds of times to find 1337 drops they can sell for something they can use, or they can join a large co-op group to roll a higher chance of finding the item that's right for them.
I think that having this as an option will attract more people to the game and will benefit Blizzard and the Diablo community. Those opposed to raiding won't be force to. They can stick with the tried and true option of MFing to find goodies and pretend that the other people that raid don't even exist.
EDIT: I have added a poll now that most arguments have been played out

Why can't a heterosexual guy tell a heterosexual guy that he thinks his booty is fly?
I read your post quite thoroughly, and understand what you are getting at entirely.
That being said...This is not WoW. This game is about hacking slashing monsters with a vivid amount of ferocity and gore. Not spending an hour and a half attacking the same monster with a group ofother players spamming "OMG GIEV HEAL NOWZ! O SHIT I DED! REZZ ME NUB!"
Sounds like a clever idea, but it doesn't really fit into Diablo, in my opinion.
Then again Blizzard is changing a lot of things, so raids might fit into their new perspective for the Diablo franchise and it might actually work quite well.
Though the games are limited to 8 people or less, so big raids won't happen.
Anyway I doubt Blizzard has intentions to include a raiding system...
I would very much love to have the option to have large scripted events that require forethought and strategy that would require 5 or more players. However, to actually increase the quality or the chance of having better items drop, leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. There are other ways to reward players for participating in large events other than loot.
PS: I don't believe that the tank n spank model of one boss vs 20 other people for 30 mins fits into the Diablo universe.
Fair enough. This forum is very refreshing compared to the mosh pit that is Gamefaqs.
However, I think that Diablo has the potential for end-game content. In Diablo 2, we all have to admit that the closest thing to end-game content was power leveling, playing the market for 1337 gear, and then re-rolling. We NEED something new. If it is not raiding, then something else. But this seems like a simple addition to the game that could add a lot IMO.

Or do like they have in wow. Have regular bosses like in d2 AND "heroic" dungeons where everything damage and health are way jacked up. The rewards are better look.
So it keeps the regular Diablo game play, but adds a even harder difficulty.
If this somehow means implementing the default "tank, healer, and dps" classes no way.
Well, in d2 there was that kind of. Think of a hell baal run. Barbs where usually in the middle dealing out damange and taking a lot themselves. Paladins were also "tanking" and dps. A Sin was there also dpsing. Lastly the casters and ranged say behind and spammed blizz, meteor, etc.
I am still not a fan of the health orb system. I really hope they go back to pots.
An interesting concept, but I don't think the whole raid concept works in that you're fighting one big uber bad guy. As someone mentioned earlier, a concept similar to heroics from WoW would be much for feasible. The whole "get a ton of people together to fight one guy for next 10 minutes" doesn't fit into Diablo, at all.
Personally, I love the idea of raids if by raid we could alter the definition to mean "getting a few players together to take on one of these few areas that has very hard monsters that employ some very sophisticated tactics and skillsets, but drop improved loot!"
Raid could be a possibility in multiplayer, but it won't be like WoW. Expect a fight that will last less than 5 minutes and with only 4 to 8 players.
I think that a feature like Uber trist could be somewhat a good example to illustrate how raids could be implemented.
Also don't expect them to be called raid...
I like that, I was also thinking that as it is, according to D2 at least, the difficulty is scaled to the number of players in a game. If I remember correctly, they basically just increase the number of hitpoints mobs have. For events that require a strong team, be it 5 or 8 players, they can actually script and tweek the stats of monsters to a specific difficulty level instead of just increasing hitpoints. For a designer to know that at least 8 players are going to be participating in this event very likely opens up alot more options for them to play with in regards to difficulty.
Once again, I abhor tank n spank tactics and I hate playing a healer. But I would imagine any large scale scripted events in any Diablo game would be having hordes of undead and whatnot that are designed to be as rough as they come. A difficulty level that randomizing all encounters could never achieve. Sure you could say that a boss is that event, but a boss can, in previous games, be easily overcome without any real strategy other than run away and shoot; also I don't know what is coming in D3, they could be implementing boss fights that do require serious forethought and genuine effort. I'm just tired of the run and shoot tactic for bosses.

You realize potions are still going to be about 80% of your healing right? Health orbs only drop like once every 35 to 40 kills. You won't be able to rely on them in a boss fight or dangerous situation.

I 100% agree. There will be none of these classes. There could be mobs, or cleverly placed healing orbs or whatever Blizzard decides on in order to allow each player to simultaneously FFA while he raids in order to maintain the Diablo gameplay.
I actually agree with another previous poster that proposed a "heroic mode" of the Diablo dungeons. This would require WAY more people, and some level of organization and would maintain the hack n' slash.

I'm not opposed to harder bosses outside of solo mode, I just don't want to see classes be stuck with certain jobs. I should be able to DPS with any class I want.

Didn't blizz say they totally eliminated the pot system?

Following the gameplay trailer, it seems that you'll have to do a lot more dodging, so maybe you won't need to be to dependent on potions/healing if you know how to use your skills.

I don't remember them saying that. I didn't SEE any in the trailer but I can't see them getting rid of it completely, how would you battle bosses? Mana orbs and Health orbs wouldn't just pop up in the middle of boss fights.
Many of the arguments against this have already been made here-

healing orbs are meant to accompany the health potions - you can see multiple health pots drop during the gameplay demo.
