“We’re very involved, because everyone’s very passionate about our games. Blizzard employees, we spend a lot of time actually iterating on [the game], and so in terms of the next phase, what we’ll try to do is a proof on concept on lot of different gameplay aspects. And we really want to get as much feedback as possible so that we can improve on the game and ensure that we meet Blizzard quality for our fans and for ourselves as players.”
Now can everyone stfu and wait to see how it will look later? THEN give feedback and not a freaking petition to demand change.
“One of the things that we considered when we were working on the visuals for ‘Diablo III’ is the fact that color is your friend. We feel that color actually helps to create a lot of highlights in the game so that there is contrast. A great analogy is like in ‘Lord of the Rings’ — not everything is dark. It allows you to see what a creepy dungeon can be like but if everything is dark it doesn’t allow you to have a lot of contrast.”
LOTOR is known for beautiful landscapes. Tolkein painted a picture of the world he created, and it was beautiful. Very little of that world is actually dark.
What has been painted for us in Diablo has been a dark world filled with dark things. What we have seen in Diablo 3 is not dark, including a dungeon that is SUPPOSED TO BE DARK... according to Deckard Cain himself.
"Then it started to go wrong. We began encountering these, these dark...things...imps or demons...or fallen, I think they're called. There were so many of them, all horns and flashes of red, attacking us from all sides. I don't think you could ever really be prepared for something like that. We got disoriented, which was easy to do. It was so dark....
What we saw was not dark. Not at all. The entire Dungeon was glowing with a blueish-green glow.
“‘Diablo I’ and ‘Diablo II’ are darker, and I think that the one of the main reasons why is the fact that in ‘Diablo I,’ you’re basically in a dungeon the whole time. And in contrast to ‘Diablo III,’ you’ll be exploring outdoors, you’ll be in dungeons, you’ll be experiencing so many different areas. We want to bring as much variety as we can when you’re playing the game so that you’re excited to check out new environments. We don’t want everything to look the same and that’s really what we’re trying to aim for.
Right, this is great. The thing he seems to be forgetting is that Diablo 2 took place outside more than it did inside. 4/5ths of the action was outside. Diablo 2 was STILL dark, not in actual darkness but in mood and feeling.
Diablo 3 does not depict that mood and feeling. This troubles me when they have been quoted as having said "We want dark to be a mood and not a color." Act 1 in Diablo 2 depicted dark as a mood without actually being dark.
Color? K. We get it. You guys like color. I like color. I prefer to play games like Super Mario Galaxy over Gears of War. I don't, however, like to play games that are colorful just to be colorful or dark just to be dark. The REASON that Diablo 1 and 2 were dark games (in mood) were because it fit. It genuinely fit.
The mood set for us in Diablo 3 is not dark. Not at all. If this is the very first thing we see when we enter the game, the mood will not be dark.
Diablo 1. First thing we see? A dead tree. We walk a bit and we see a dying man in a pool of blood.
Diablo 2. First thing we see? Dead grass, a rogue encampment. We walk out, first place we find? Den of Evil.
Diablo 3. First thing we see? A polished and new cathedral (doesn't make sense, doesn't match the concept art, doesn't fit the lore, doesn't match what Deckard Cain said about the place) that is glowing with a blueish-green glow. It isn't dark like Deckard Cain mentioned.
“What we also tried to do is create very clean textures so that you can really focus. It’s a stylized feel and in that sense, it’s very sort of a Blizzard philosophy. It’s just really pushing the envelope in terms of the visuals so that everyone is excited about how everything looks. We think that ‘Diablo III’ is going to be better in so many different ways. We’re just building and improving upon the the first and second ‘Diablo’ games.”
No arguments here. The textures are fine. Maybe a little more detail, but stuff like that comes with development time. Everyone understands this.
What we don't understand are:
Color and theme choices
Glowing dungeons

I'm SO glad they are focusing on the gameplay first. Although I'm firm in my belief that the game needs to be darker in mood from the VERY beginning, I'd much rather have a game that plays well than more mood.
One thing I don't think Blizzard understands is that they already have a series that is bright and vibrant. They have another series that is an inbetween (starcraft) and they have this series that is incredibly dark and morbid. To many of us, it appears as if they have lost sight of this and it's a shame.
Yes, read it. READ what you have written before calling anyone a moron or a troll: "Just an interview which has surfaced. Everyone complaining about graphics should take a long read, maybe even twice to let it sink in."
Learn some manners, dear child.
See when the interview was posted? Oh right it was today, call me a child. Let it sink in that your opinion matters I've updated the front for people exactly like you. You specifically went straight on the offensive with
Quote from the article.
Nihil novi.
The topic creator should learn to read comprehensively.
You misunderstood the intent but once again, just for you.
I also asked Lee about how and when the dev team will take fan feedback into account. He wouldn’t go into specifics, but said:

Morons are lacking to see what the interview is ALL about, this one at the bottom. Look how I got jumped all over for trying to inform people that in the next phase things will CHANGE.
Well, clearly I must be wrong. It's Blizzard's game. Who am I to tell them I know something about their games that they don't?
Well its your opinion. Its feedback. They can build upon and if enough people were to agree with you blizzard could edit the game and make you and the people like you enjoy the game that much more. Nothing wrong with disagreeing.
Also Zellog dont get all defensive because you got called a child when you just called someone else a "moron" Yes... I can see how the adults are the more mature people. *coughs*
I don't understand where all this "some people don't want color" comes from, read this entire forum, read every freaking post made, there is no one who doesn't want color to be in the game. I mean really, where the fuck did this nonexisting nonsense come from?
I agree with you that SOME people are saying they do not like the art (character models, architecture, armor). However, the screen shot manipulations have have seen do NOTHING but gray out the color. People download an image, remove the color, repost it with a thumbs up, and a dozen people come in and say, "OMG! That's perfect."
I have and continue to agree with people that things like the "smiley-face" gargoyle are not art that is consistent with the Diablo universe. I do not support making the screen grayer.

I agree about the gargoyle entirely. My biggest worry, though, is that they don't understand what the work dark means in regards to mood.
Did you guys ever think that maybe this is early in the game and it's suposed to be bright before the shit hits the fan and turns everything dark...... or maybe like they said they want the dark areas to feel dark and if everything is dark you cant do that.....AND MAYBE JUST MAYBE we have only seen like 1% of this game and hae no idea wtf we are talking about.............
how bout you all try wiating a month or so then start the bitch fest

I think most people do understand they when people say dark they refer to atmosphere and the mood but there seems to be a lot of fanatic fan boys just starting stuff (and throwing a lot of insults around) just because someone would DARE disagree with blizzards view. I meen really! How dare the fans voice their opinions and about what they like and dislike so blizzard can change their product so when its finished will attract more consumers and make them a larger ammout of money! For shame!
He makes a good point. Variety is a good thing and a sunny day outside will just add more darkness and dread to entering a dungeon or the pits of hell.

Right. I don't think Blizzard understands what that means. In fact, I don't think they actually understand what the word dark even means in context to light.

But don't forget this interview took place before all the commotion, petitions etc.
FTA: "I got answers in Paris last weekend before people were really asking the question."

I completely understand the idea of a dark mood. But when I see people post stuff like this (or this or this), they have changed nothing but color.
If they want to ask Blizzard to add different details or textures to change the mood, that would be a different discussion.

That bridge link is probably the best looking doctored screen that anyone has ever done on the planet. It makes Diablo look like 300... an incredibly stylized and not cartoony movie/comic.
Wasn't that what they were going for anyway? "Stylized does not equal cartoony" ?

The only difference between the two shots is that the second one is 90% gray. It's okay if people like that. That's their business. But let's call it what it is: gray.
You guys who are agisnt the color do realize that the game is designed to get progressivly darker has you move from lvl to lvl right. You should all realize that the game starts 20 years after D2 with no hellions roaming about messing with stuff and that the people in that world believe the events never happend and are just ledgend. Which means they had time to rebuild and the skies cleared.
I really wish blizz would just show off some end lvl stuff so all the complainers that seem to have selective hearing/reading would go "Oh wait the game dose get super creepy as the story goes...ok nvm"
Not to mention when I picked up D2 again it wasnt all monochormatic (aka one color for you non artistsy types) it had a tone of color and some of it was very bright and others were just very dark version of green. The game looks fine.
BTW - If you want truely creepy then picture you self in real life with everything very vibrant and no one is around and fog surronds everything. Trust me you will be creep out. Plus their are other emotions they are trying to convay other than horror and shock such as errie, and the clam before the storm.

Ahhh okay! Ya just turning down the saturation. I can understand how people dont like that. I kind of like how when its done the red and purple stands out more. Ya I they could use the colors they have but more so-change where they use the colors. I would actually like to see more greys but only because I think it would look could with contrast against some of the brighter colors. Theres also the fact when you see the lootable corpses they look nothing like the ones in D2 all bloody and what not.
In the end I think blizzard will change it but it will probably be things like the character model, textures and more random blood on the ground not so much the saturation like people want but in the example you do tend to get a foggy look look and I wouldnt mind seeing stuff like that in the game.
Now can everyone stfu and wait to see how it will look later? THEN give feedback and not a freaking petition to demand change.
