Heres the most valid and truthful info, by wikipedia.
There is a purple chat gem that is only visible when inside a chat channel. There are many theories about the purpose of this gem. There is, however, no verified purpose for this gem aside from a meaningless message. The gem toggles between an active and inactive state. When activated, a chat message appears stating, "Gem Activated" and likewise, a message "Gem Deactivated" is shown when it becomes inactive. It is also known to say "Mooooooo!" and "Perfect Gem Activated" on random, rare occasions. The official Multiplayer FAQ noted that "[the gem] is working correctly and has more than exceeded our expectations".[2] It wasn't until much later in a fan-chat where Bill Roper revealed that the secret about the gem is that it has no secret, "Sometimes a Gem is just a Gem!"[3]
It said "Mooo" in Diablo II. its there to waste people's time, nothing else. Ever see t-shirts with both sides that say "Want to know how to keep an idiot busy? Look at the other side". Same idea.
Head to either Diablo3.com or Blizzard.com/diablo3 (they are the same thing), and just above the words "And The Heavens Shall Tremble" you may notice a small blue gem set into the gothic scrollwork.
You may further venture to actually move your mouse to hover over this little gem, and you may notice that it is a clickable item.
Should you be bold and daring enough to click the nefarious gem, you may notice it's otherworldly effects: the bitch turns purple.
Clicking it a second time results in the gem "turning off" and going back to it's previous dark-blue state.
Checking the site's source, it appears they have named it "chatgem.swf", perhaps an homage to the same small gem that has plagued many Diablo 2 players curious of its true nature.
Perhaps turning the gem "on" and then clicking somewhere else will result in some previously-hidden part of the site?
Perhaps it does nothing?
You be the judge.

It's time to welcome the other 80% of the color wheel to a Diablo game.
Supposedly, every millionth click will move the release date one day closer.
I think you have your facts mixed up. From what I read, any given minute where there are less than 1,000 worldwide clicks, the release date gets moved back one month.
I doubt it does anything but I think it will be in diablo3 and it will do something. Blizzard likes to take things that the fans hallucinate and put them in the next game as an easter egg (such as the cow level in D1 and putting it in D2). I just hope it is something cool (like the cow level in D2 :)).
You click it and it turns purple... GEM activated... GEM deactivated...
grrrrrrr
Must they torture us with another GEM? lol!
Post your theories on the GEM!
If you didn't see it, you can find it on the main diablo3 page directly above the words "And the Heavens Shall Tremble"
Muahaha!
maybe this time round they'll sneak some purpose to it!
One can hope... right?

Really? I'm awfully sorry about this...I suppose I should have done a more through search.
If this is really the case, then all apologies. This thread can be closed and/or deleted.
