I'm all for a happy medium. I want the graphics to be grainy, more dark and grizzled, and there to be a light radius, and gothic detail strewn about.
But I don't want them to completely change their art style (the way chairs are drawn, candles, etc.) for fear that they have to scrap everything and start fresh in terms of level design. They already have act 1 done, would you want them to scrap it? Then we won't see diablo for 3-4 years.
Lets hope not 3-4 years, They keep mentioning how they would like to take their time with this release. Hoping for 1-2yrs some of the hardest aspects of the game are already complete such as the game engine and physics processor. That means the gameplay programming is mostly complete. It's probably all artwork scenery and aesthetics that will take up the time now.
The most I can see them doing is maybe darkening the lighting and making more blue/red lights and losing the red. But that's about it. They won't really remodel the characters or retexture much. (But that's just my opinion)

It's a lot faster and easier for them to just darken a skin or texture then to completely remake it.
Of course paypayaso, but a lot of crybabies want the art direction to change. Does anyone remember STARCRAFT GHOST! It's definitely possible with D3.
I don't recall any petitions that crippled Starcraft: Ghost's production. As far as I can tell, it was their fallout out with Nihilistic that caused them to start over. By the time they got the project running well again, the lifetime was almost up for the xbox, gamecube, and ps2 (tho the ps2 lasted longer than was predicted at the time). Their choices were pretty much to scrap it, or start over *again*.
Well I hope you're right. We all need to remember how much we want this game and how long we've been waiting instead of being nitpicky.
Honestly, to an extent beggers can't be choosers.
Don't you mean consumers? Blizzard makes games for the people and we pay for them.
The game has been scrapped a few times already and has gotten this far, ALL within 4 years. I am sceptical of "stylization", but I imagine it could look great if placed in the right gothic atmosphere. That is all most of us really want anyway.
Actually, I gotta say, this a bit like when TF2 was first shown with it's very cartoony graphics. I don't think it will be changed, hell most of the tfc/qtf purists bought it anyways.
If you're a real diablo fan you'd play it for the gameplay, and you'd get over the bloody graphics
That's right jakey. And to the others, I actually WANT graphical tweaks with graininess and light radius and gothic detail here and ther to make it more diablioesque. However, lots of people want complete model remakes and art direction changes. I'm sorry, but at that point, you're asking for D3 to be scrapped.
When it comes to such extreme demands, gameplay matters over graphics here.
I don't think anyone has stated that they want dark graphics and terrible gameplay. This is not an excluded middle debate.
I and apparently a lot of others think the situation can be resolved with a simple palette update. Working with a true 3D engine allows you some flexibility on how things are rendered. Remember the multiple rendering filters you could apply in crysis?
The models aren't that bad, just needs some anti-WOW colors.

OK, seriosly. You paid for Diablo II. You may not necessarily but DIII. It's not your game, not your property, it does not owe you anything, and nobody owes you anything for God's sake, if you want something in this life you earn it. If you don't like DIII make your own DIII.
Blizzard never scrapped a project because of fan demand. They only did it when they felt it wouldnt live up to its standards no matter if the fans liked it (see Warcraft Adventure).
A major graphics overhaul would delay the game significantly (imagine they worked on it for about 3 years now according to Rob Pardo) for the current graphics and the current armor model (that have a unique design for each class including male/female versions).
Also from what Pardo said on his gamespot interview the first act is the only one thats fully playable but the rest are playable to some grade. So are the rest of the classes. Changing their design (cause they "look too WoWish") would delay the game for years, make the graphics engine too old for the time its going to be released and cause many more problems that shouldnt be there in the first place.
Anyway, i believe that Blizzard wont give in because they know they'll win back the people that didnt love the change eventually. A good game is hard to find in this flood of junk we have released lately.
Do remember that its primarily the hardcore fans signing the petition. The average Blizzard fan will look at Diablo and say "That looks great!"
They will cater to both, but they know that all the hardcore fans will buy it and love it anyway. It's in their best interest to release this within the next 2 years, preferably around the time Bioware's MMO hits.
This doesn't mean that they will ignore the hardcore fanbase, but they certainly won't change the game for a minority. Even then, it seems hardcore fans are split roughly in half between liking it and not liking it.

I saw screw that, we can't wait that long.
They've already have restarted the project a few times.
although i think they'll still make some minor changes
it wont be more than 3-4 years imo

Man, even 2 years seems so long...
Yea, funny isn't it. Like they say, you don't miss something until it's gone.
