and if they effen listen and just destroy the cartoony feel the icon weapons and the witchdoctor foolish stupid world of warcraft noises he makes
it sounds like the imp from world of warcraft when it makes those DUMB noises...
do not respond to blizzard like that, you're one of those ignorant players that act like theyre better, respect what theyve been doing , it's their game
I think the overall art concept art looks great. The rendered product not so much. Everything (as many other are saying) is to bright and colorful, To cartooning, Not gritty enough. When i first saw it, I thought ...WarcraftIII? now don't me wrong Warcraft is a great game but that Warcraft, this is Diablo it's suppose to be dark, realistic, creepy, cool. Heck if Diablo started out looking like Warcraft i wouldn't have gotten into to it near as much as I am. now when I think Diablo i think " yeah i get to kill the devil I'm such a good christen " just kidding. really i think of the look everything looks like its made out of ebony: dark and has just enough highlight on it to see what its is. and they did a great job in Diablo II, even though your out during broad daylight it looks like its in a solar eclepse or dusk so Dark is how you spell cool. So please make it dark again, stay away from any glowing color effects be brave deney the urges of warcraft influentience. make it gritty, old ,dirty, evil, think about use of only highlights to show details in a pitchblack envroments think of the ciematics and playing manuals from Diablo I. So there you have my II bits, and incase you just decide to throw cation to the wind and make WaR-DiaBlo III CRaft. Here is some food for thought: Joel Schumacher the directer of the forth Batman movie(Batman and Robin) was once quoted as saying he thought Batman had gotten too dark! i think it was time to make it lighter less scary, its too scary! (WHAT!!! oh yeah the DARKNIGHT! is too dark.) Now i don't think i have to remind you of what king of that thinking spawed. Haahummworst movie all timeummmhumm..... so yeah let keep its dark maybe yeah. if none of this makes sence sorry, i'll summerise just think "Doom Dark" thanks.
Great job Blizzard! Diablo 3 looks gorgeous. I believe a game can have some bright colors (especially in an outdoor area!) and still have a dark, gothic feel. You have pulled this off so far with Diablo 3. Having a dark gothic feel goes beyond what colors you use in the environment, unfortunatly a lot of people cannot see past this.
D1 and D2, though made of 2d sprites, looked far more realistic, gothic, and dark in comparison to the d3 graphics that look too shiny, colorful, and overall have a very WoW-ish feeling.
this is what D3 should look like ....
As you can see the ones on the right side are what the fans who are complaining about the graphics want. We want a darker, grainier pallet and design.
I understand that Blizzard said they want to focus more on the EXPERIENCE OF A DARK FEELING, but how can you EXPERIENCE that when the visuals show otherwise? The way you experience a game is through sight, and what is on the screen is an extremely light color pallet, that looks very cartoony and destroys that dark and gothic feeling completely. It just looks like WoW with an overhead camera shot.
The design and colors just dont make the game have that feel or look that d2 had. The d2 sprites looked more real in comparison to the d3 graphics. I rather have the game look like the rightside pictures. They have a more dark feeling and also look more real, unlike the smooth cartoon drawings to the left.
I agree 100%, add in the the effect of dynamique lights in the dungeons (so you dont see all arround you like in the demo) and you got a perfect game on your hands! Game needs to be a bit dark, dont mind too much the comic book art as the title will look good for a lot of years to come, but please keep the darkness and the free the denizens of hell ;)!
I completely understand the effort that is going into a project like Diablo 3 and I as well as all other Diablo fans are very grateful for the work Blizzard is putting into creating a truly good sequel.
To make any sort of judgment on Diablo 3 at this point in time would be a very poor judgment at best for even a plebeian such as myself understands that this game is far from being in it's final stages, for art design as well as gameplay.
With that said, I would like to make my opinion heard as to what direction I would like to see the art design go for Diablo 3. From looking at the signatures of the concept artwork, the earliest date I saw was 2004, so quite obviously you all have been working for a long time towards capturing that special look and feel that makes a game a "Diablo Game." I felt that overall, it certainly did capture that uniqueness that is Diablo. However, at times I was thrown off by the look of the background. Rendered as beautifully as it was, the demo was just that, a demo; and although well made, at several points the "look" of the game betrayed the ideas of Diablo, which are: scare the user shitless.
Puns aside, I agree to an extent with most people when they say the art style seems a tad cartoony. The Barbarian looked absolutely fantastic in my opinion! Also the Witchdoctor and his minions looked very good as well. I also have no complaints about the creatures displayed in the game either. But where I do have a complaint is in the backgrounds. I am an illustrator and I know very well that the background can make or break an image. It sets the entire tone of what you are trying to portray. It is very hard for anyone to take a picture of Chuck Norris seriously if he is situated in a field of flowers with beautiful rainbows and unicorns prancing through the happy little brook. Granted, the image would be absolutely hilarious but the artist didn't complement Chuck very well.
I'm more than sure all of Blizzard have higher art degrees than me and my example is simple exaggeration and a weak attempt at humor but what I'm getting at is the backgrounds aren't quite "there" yet. I actually love the color palate and the background graphics are phenomenal (although the leaves and bushes aren't very detailed looking and appear more as a blob of leaves stuck on the ground because of lack of shadowing to create depth). However, the dungeons seemed a little too well lit as well as being a little too "tidy." I'm not one of those guys who want Diablo 3 to be pushed to the edge of black and white, I just would like to see the light radius creep down to a more Diablo 1 likeness as well as have torches and other light sources dimmed as well (or perhaps sharpened to create hard, dramatic shadowing). Through the use of all ranges of lighting, a true air of uncertainty and fear could be created. One of my many art teachers always told me, "It's what you can't see that makes a picture great." What he meant by this was not hide everything in shadow, but partially obscure certain things to cause greater depth or sharper images as well as create emotion and tonality throughout the landscape of the desired image. This likewise goes with having too much detail in that it distracts from the overall image, though you already know that and so far have done a good job in not over-cluttering the game with detail.
Other than those small pointers, everything looks fantastic and I hate you all for now making me wait for Diablo 3 (just kidding). I honestly do appreciate the hard work you all are putting into Diablo 3 and I am waiting at the edge of my seat for any sort of update on the game, be it concept art, features, or even some lies told by someone who says "they know a guy." I have the utmost faith in Blizzard's ability to get it right. They've done it in the past and it's foolish to doubt you guy's won't do it now! My only regret is I'm not employed as a conceptual artist for Blizzard. It would have been a dream come true to do the concept art for my all-time favorite game franchise!
Thank you for your time and all your hard work,

Yeah those bright cyan floors and neon red stages in Diablo 1 is uber dark.
Being able to see stuff is totally dumb I love greyed up graphics just check out this awesome Hellgates pic:
.... There's going to be a gamma slider so people who want to kill their eyes can do so. There's contrast settings on most monitors. Scratch filter? Take a jagged rock to the screen.
You can always subtract color, but you can't get it back if it doesn't exist in the source. This entire meme is horrible and dumb, and I am annoyed to see it continued here as a news item.
I like it how it is but i still voted on "it needs more work" because some of the art style do needs improvement, in a sense that we should never see a rainbow or beautiful flowers in diablo 3.
As far as dark/not dark goes i think this way is great, maybe add just a little bit more darkness when the day goes from sunny to rainy and thunder storms, so that there is a greater impact and people notice it more.

Diablo 3 is graphically and artistically great, there needs to be variety in the game, instead of only plain and dark areas!
+Wouldn't it be better and more interesting if from a sunny beautiful day, mist starts covering the screen, rain starts falling, thunders and lightning striking and it starts to darken, instead of constant dark!?
From the Diablo 3 gameplay video, I think the art design looks great and they should stick with the style they have now. The dungeons looked properly creepy and contrasted well with the outdoor sections.
I can't believe anyone would want Blizzard to change their entire art style now. For them to do so would probably add months and months of additional development time before they could release the game.
this sarcastic post pretty much sums up the whining being done by these so called "fans" of diablo.
the game needs a LITTLE more darkness in specific areas. i.e. dungeons/caverns/cellars thats about it. now stop exaggerating all of you.
good post really sums up the bitching in this thread.
btw that petition is 8,500 and counting, thats crazy. There is noway blizzard isnt going to make adjustments to the games visuals.
8678 actualy at present, but thats just it... apparently there is a group of people that... by no means small, thinks the petition is correct. I personaly do not agree with all of it, but Blizzard made its money off people like us, The fans of the series. The ones who bought the originals and played them (way to much). Personaly i would like to think that Blizzard would not forget the people who helped get them to where they are now. I maybe wrong, we shall see.
Are you all like Howey from the Benchwarmers?! "SUN BAD SUN BAD!" Light exists even when demons walk the planet. Yes it's a darker game but when you're outside the sun shines and maybe if there's water in the air there just might be a FUCKING RAINBOW! You can't deny color just because you want to seem like a badass playing a dark game. The game can be dark and still look like a turd. I'm not playing DBZ Budokai I'm playing an RPG.
really cant believe a petition was started in the first place when we ALL have seen the same gameplay vid, 19 minutes of ONE dungeon, and ONE outdoor map.... whoever started the petit in the first place, when YOU get your new job at Blizzard, then you can open your mouth about how the game should be.
I seriously think some people are over-reacting to the new art style. Take those Diablo 3 gameplay videos and run them in your mind again with the moody and creepy Diablo I dungeon music. I think the art style is fine, and the more critical thing for the whole feel of the game is to get the right ambient music and sound effects. The music and sound effects really need to evoke a feeliing of dread, like the further down you go in the dungeon, the closer you are approaching your worst nightmare.
So if you don't like your meal, your drink, the way your new clothes were made etc. you just buy new and think "well, if I want it better, I should make it myself"? Come on, it's called an opinion and critique and everyone with half a brain can do it and express his preferences. We are the fans, we pay for the game, we will play it, the game is for us, we have EVERY right to complain and critique every aspect of the game to the last polygon.
Freedom of speach.

Blizzard if you are reading this just put a light radius in dark places like dungeons/caverns/etc and continue working on this 8year anticipated game.

The art shown looks like a gorgeous painting. And that's what it should look like.
I hope this clears up everything for everyone.
Look how dark that is compared to wow ( a full lit up room ) any darker and ill you will be blind. Stop jumping on a band wagon.
