Wow, I can't believe people are complaining about this. Blizzard can make Diablo 3 look however the hell they want it to look like, it's not up to the fans to decide. The fans aren't making the game. They shouldn't complain because they are unhappy with the graphics. Diablo 3 will have so much more new features, and instead of praising Blizzard on how great they are, people go and complain about the "cartoonish graphics"? Next thing we know, Blizzard actually changes the graphics to how people want it to look like, but it'll take longer for the game to release, then people start complaining about that. Geez, and Blizzard has only released a few screenshots and a video so far, at least give them a god damn chance to show us more levels and features before already dubbing Diablo 3 as crap because of the graphics.
And for my first post I've decided to make an image that best displays how I feel about this whole "Petitioning for a different Diablo 3 Art Direction".
And, because I'm a nice guy who tries to see all sides in an argument, I am posting a redone version of the image I made to make it more pleasing to the eye of the people who want Diablo 3 to change its art direction.
Here is my image done up in GOTHIC ART STYLE!!! Just for you guys...
Seriously just use a black and white, grainy TV when you play D3 if you really want it to look like that.
That's cool liquid. If you can't take a joke then that's on you.
I do feel I have enough understanding/training in art to understand that people petitioning for a darker, grainier game aren't seeing the big picture for this game and that their photoshopped screen shots are like a disrespectful slap in the face of Blizzard's Pro art direction. It's obvious that Blizzard makes such great games that people are inherently too critical of the revealing of them every time.
No, I can take a joke very well and quite often I go as far as to joke about myself, I've got no problem with all kinds of humour. But, you see, what you tried wasn't new, and you will see almost the same post as you made on almost every page in this and every other thread about the graphics or the artistic direction of the game. Not just on this forum but on every one.
Firstly, if you're this offended and calling my post "bashing" then you don't know how to take a joke. Secondly, if the points I am making through my joke are found on many other forums then maybe there is some relevancy to them. Either way - it is my opinion. Just because others share it does not invalidate it. In fact, it makes it solidifies my points.
Yes, in fact I know enough about art and I've dealt with artists and exhibitions etc. for some years now, I have no education in it but I don't need one to see where something does or doesn't fit something else. You don't have to know how to act to spot or criticize bad acting, you don't have to know how to write a book to know when some books aren't very well written or just plain fucking stupid, you don't have to be a movie producer to not like some film or consider some of them to be flat out, mind-boggling moronic. You don't have to know how to cook in order to not like a meal. See my point here?
Wow. That's a long justification in order to convince yourself that it's alright for you to tell Blizz that you know better than them what art direction their game needs. Sounds like you're arguing that your opinion should be heard no matter what. Well, if you don't like my joke, my points or my opinions that's cool. I still think their both valid and funny.
And the rest of the stuff you typed is just blah blah steam you're letting off - trying to argue points I never even made. You're just upset and need to relax a bit. You don't know what's best. You only have your opinion on how YOU think it should be,...and I have my opinion on people who Photoshop screen shots using a Burn Tool, Desaturation, and the Film Grain filter and then saying that that is how a game should look - dead, grainy, boring, hard to look at for hours on end - basically the same dead grainy shit that a lot of wanna be "edgy" modern films crap out at us all the time nowadays. (Trust me, I'm a film major. I know aesthetics. I am educated and education DOES MATTER when it comes to something like ART DIRECTION.)
Also, while I understand that fans feel passionate and want to show Blizz what they want through photoshopping screen shots, I feel that it should be brought up that it can be disrespectful to their work. They made a dark fantasy world that appears painted. It adds a nice variety to the game instead of drowing the player in blackness constantly, we get breaths of the life of the world around us. So while I get the intention I also feel like it can be disrespectful at times to assume you know what's best and change people's vision into something that people who played the old diablo games can't seem to let go of. Let go of the past and accept change, I say.
This is why I'm tired of people going "Oh, emos, don't like color fuck off!" kind of attitude or something that tries to completely misrepresent our opinion and character just to be funny or to get some sort of street-cred or something. First read carefully, make sure you understand the issues and then comment on them, no need to belittle or mock anyone in the process. Damn, this is the last time I'm explaining something so obvious as this.
Don't get all weepy on me. I think the joke I made should be made in order to show that some of the people photoshopping screenshots are not as thoughtful or educated on the subject of art direction as they should be. We should be able to laugh at people so presumptuous, pretentious, and afraid of an old game changing. It's not cool that people are so ready to claim art direction of an unreleased game faulty because after 8 years since the last game it has changed. At least some people are hearing what Blizz has to say and changing their minds.
Your "joke" wasn't at all funny. By your same logic, there are 50k signatures to that petition. The petition, who's been around for almost the same amount of time and has been published on the same places and supports the current art direction has less than 2k last time I checked. Much more people are voicing their disappointment with the artistic direction than in support for it. Doesn't this tell you something, by your own way of reasoning?
Ah, Liquid. You don't like my joke? Boo-hoo. And now you're using one of those "By your own logic..." internet arguements. Cute. I think you made a moot point here. My point was : Shouldn't it tell you something when people all over are poking fun at the request to make Diablo less color-driven in it's art direction? One petition having more sigs than another is meaningless and we both know it. One petition does not make for the voice of MOST of the diablo fans/ potential buyers out there. You should know that. Think about how many people will buy this game and compare that to the number in the petition.
One thing I will say to you though: you ain't funny nor original, nor even witty or smart in your "joke". You may be a film major, but you certainly are not a comedian, so don't try to be something you're not. No one is enjoying old, unoriginal and unfunny "jokes" to begin with, very much less so when they've been used to death.
Awww adorable. You want to bash my joke because it was so effective. I will say that I was not trying for originality, but was merely making a joke that illustrates the points being made by many - kinda applying an image to what a lot of people are thinking/saying. But other than that I'm not going to defend my joke anymore. It's funny. If you don't like then that's on you.
You're just coming here (I'm new too) so it's understandable you will voice your opinion and try to mock us, but we've been through all this, we've discussed it in several threads. No need to restart it, it's all been done. Let it go, let people vote for whatever they support (no one really thinks petition will change anything, it just acts as a big poll to show how many people are in support of the idea).
Ha. How am I not "letting people vote"? What am I holding on to? Haha. If anything people calling for grainy, desaturated games are holding on and need to let go - and Blizz is going to help make that happen when they release Diablo 3 and you go out and buy it no matter what it looks like.
That's ok if you think that. However, I'm an educated graphic designer and film maker. I'm a comic book artist, and I do concept work and character designs as a hobby. I'm also a writer who is working with an artist on a comic I wrote and I am hands on in the art direction.
Alright liquid. You had to push it. You had to just get your anger out (Probably because Blizz is sticking with the current art direction and told you guys to piss off). Well I thought I'd be nice but it looks like I have to make yet another comment or two in order to help you understand some things:
Quote from "liquid" »
Nothing of the sort, yet I am not going on rambling about "color"
No one rambled about color. I made a joke about people complaining about it - and yes there are a lot of people complaining about it. Moving on.
when the color, as stated a number of times, is not even so much of an issue. Yet this is all you see and comment on and if that's an artistic direction for you or at least the most important part of it, you are clearly clueless.
Color is an issue for some, and not for others. Color is part of the artistic direction. At no point did I say that it was all that Artistic Direction was about. You're pulling out straw man arguments here. I made a joke about the people who are complaining about the colors. And? So?
Internet arguments? lol. I'm using your way of thinking and forming an argument that is supported 10x more than your own.
Your use of math to claim your point is better than mine is yet another fallacy. I already pointed this out.
You may be a rocket scientist for all I care, you still suck at making jokes.
Tossed another flame in there didn't ya?
I bet that every one that signed the petition will buy the game. But where is this discussed in the petition? Please show me. There are like 10 people who've said they won't buy it, and I'm sure that they will buy it upon release. You're, again, missing the point.
Thanks for agreeing with me.
Your joke was effective only in your own little mind, sorry to bring you the harsh truth. It wasn't funny, it wasn't clever, it wasn't new and it "joked" about something that no one is saying.
Now wait a sec,...you said above in previous posts that you've seen my joke all over the net. You said you've seen it in other forums and other blah. But now you're saying that "No one is saying it"? And you're saying that my joke is not original at all (even though I already explained that it wasn't meant to be) and then, in the SAME sentence no less, you say that "NO ONE" else is making the joke? Hmmm. Sounds a little off to me.
If that's funny by your standards, fine. And for the record, your joke wasn't offensive it was just another lame attempt to be funny by another Internet user.
That's ok if you think that. My friends and I are cracking up at it.
You're not stopping anyone, you just try to make fun of those who do, and that's a stupid thing to do because it's basically making fun of the right of people to voice their opinions.
Ha. So I'm making fun of people's "rights"? How are "rights" involved? I'm just making fun of the PEOPLE. I've said this before in a previous post and I even explained why I am poking fun. People's rights have nothing to do with it...so another moot point from you.
If you think that only those who can do something can complain about someone else doing the same thing wrong, you're delusional. Think about that next time you don't like the way your food is cooked or how a movie you waited was made.
I never said that people couldn't complain either. Did I? Check my posts. I think it is alright for me to poke fun and call people out for crying over art direction to the point where they alter screen shots to how they think it ought to be. I simply pointed out that I have some education on the topic and a lot who don't are photoshopping pics and putting them on the net - and that's funny to me. They deserve to be made fun of in my opinion. And let's face it: It's just a joke in the end. It's not mean or offensive.
I'm not wasting any more time on you. You wouldn't have freaked out like this unless I made an image that had an impact. So thanks for the hat tip on my joke. It was designed to inspire a laugh, some thought, and yes - to make people like you squirm.
If you made a joke about people complaining about colors, why did you use the terms "art direction" and "gothic style"? These arent the same as color, but you talk as if people who want gothic style would just want black&white. And, 'artistic style =/= colors' as you know. Its just a part, as YOU said.
It's called a joke. If you and the other people want to read into it, claim I made a statement I didn't and the refute it, then that's ok. That's called a straw man argument. Look it up.
He said "its about something no ones saying". NOT "no one else is making your joke".
Learn to read. (Sorry for assholeness, i cant hold myself.)
That's the same thing. Learn to comprehend.
Edit: lol three against one
Ha. More like Blizzard vs. you three. Guess who already won?
That's ok if you think that. However, I'm an educated graphic designer and film maker. I'm a comic book artist, and I do concept work and character designs as a hobby. I'm also a writer who is working with an artist on a comic I wrote and I am hands on in the art direction.
And you do what again?
I find that unlikely, but if you are you are a bit of an ignorant jerk considering your meant to have an education in this sort of thing. Even someone with absolutely no education on the matter should be smart enough to see that they HAVE changed the style and they HAVE taken inspiration from the style from Warcraft and that its totally reasonable that some people aren't going to be happy about it. If you had loyal fans of a Comic book series that you made and one day changed the whole look of it for a style totally un-befitting of the content would you expect to lose sales and piss people off? surely yes?
BTW, for someone who is a graphic designer and draws comic book art it seems a little odd that you would take some stupid image off the net rather than draw your own characters for a comic piece, it should take you longer to look up pictures like that than to whip out a quick character sketch if your practiced at it, or perhaps you don't draw at all?
Hehe. I love how personal you've all gotten with me. Kinda sad when you think about it.
Firstly, Corwyn - I took an image and photoshopped it in about 5 minutes and you think it's odd that I didn't spend a couple hours drawing it? So I must not be a comic book artist? Well deduced Sherlock.
Also, all I said was that I was educated on the subject of art direction after being told by someone that I have no clue what art direction is. I think it's fair to let people know that I have some background in the arts with in this discussion.
liquid - I see now. What you wrote was poorly worded. You are saying that no one is complaining about colors...well guess what - they are. I've read freakin' news articles tackling the subject. Stop denying it. People have complained about a lot of things dealing with the art direction. Color is one of them. Move on. You've got some misplaced anger and it's pretty sad.
Kenzai - I like you, dude. I do think that you don't realize what you are saying a lot of the time or you don't get my humor. I see what you're saying about liquids statement and I think that he could have worded his meandering attacks on me a bit better. He also is dead wrong. People have complained about colors. Others don't like the "WoW"ness of the pics. Are we all blind here or is it just liquid? The screen shots that have been photoshopped by diablo fans that want a change in art direction are desaturated of color and made grey and dark. Yes, some people have complained that there are too many colors. I know that you know this. I wonder how it missed liquid.
Just take it as a joke. I can't believe you're trying to bring up the "Gothic" discussion. I poked fun at people who photoshopped the D3 screens by doing an exaggeration of what they did. Right? Get it yet? Why should I even explain it to you? Other people get the joke.
And the Blizz vs. you comment was: Drum roll........another joke. I was just saying that Blizz gets the final word on their game.
Anyway - I'd like to know how you guys feel after hearing Blizzards response to people about the Art Direction. Are you feeling better about the game now or?
Firstly, Corwyn - I took an image and photoshopped it in about 5 minutes and you think it's odd that I didn't spend a couple hours drawing it? So I must not be a comic book artist? Well deduced Sherlock.
I am a fairly average drawer and it would take me minutes to rough out a couple of characters in photoshop using my tablet, barely longer than it would take to find an image. If I were practiced at it it would be much faster to draw some quick characters in a rough manner than find the image. A couple of hours? I think not.
Anyhow, not like it matters, your "joke" got old after the first bunch of idiotic 12 year olds spouted it. Plenty around here are really sick of hearing the same idiots saying the petition is about black and white color and thinking the term Gothic means black lipstick and eyeliner.
Corwyn - Sorry buddy, I'm calling you out. It takes way longer to draw an image than to snag one and put some word bubbles on it. Stop playing dumb. And sorry if you don't like my joke. That's on you. I know what Gothic art style means btw - my joke was poking fun at people who don't know what it means. If some one thinks that Gothic needs less color and more darkness than you can handle then they don't understand it.
liquid - It has gone beyond silly with you. You've got no real point to make. You only have a grudge to fulfill because of a joke I made. You are making all kinds of straw man arguments and pulling out claims I never made and you're wasting your time refuting things I never said. Just take the stick out of your butt and accept the joke made a point or two.
There are people who don't know what they are talking about who photoshop screenshots and tell people that a game should take a specific direction. There are also people who DO know what they are talking about who want a game to change direction as well. I think the people who don't know what they are talking about and spouting off about it can be very, very funny. You should be laughing at these people too as they hurt your cause,...unless you're one of them...eeeek!
Go ahead and take my joke as offensive and connect the faulty logic you've come up with to my comment about being disrespectful to Blizzard's art. It makes NO sense, but I don't really care anymore. It's too tiring having you misunderstand and assume so much about a joke I made. A joke can be an exaggeration. Think about that before you assume that I said that the petition calls for a Black and White game. That's just too funny that you said that...
Kenzai - your English is great. I did read the petition and I read articles about the fans reacting to the art direction instantly upon D3 revealing. Guess what I think about it?
First, if you ever played WoW - we all know the WoW forums are a huge soap box for complaints and ideas for changes in the game, etc, and that Blizz likes to hear feedback from fans because they rock. But if you know this you probably also know that a huge amount of people complain about silly things and make childish demands of Blizzard. They throw tantrums and cry about how things aren't going their way. It gets bad doesn't it?
Well literally hours after D3 was unveiled people started complaining. They began photoshopping screen shots and crying out for huge changes. Now, in my opinion, this was a knee jerk reaction in a lot of ways and once again the complainers took it too far with some of their photoshopping. Some of those screens look awful and seem to be telling Blizz that you can't make a lush lively environment at all in Diablo. It made me laugh to think people could be so instantly disapproving of Blizz - but that's the way it goes when you make great games I guess. I also felt like, much like on the WoW forums (Thank god I don't play that game anymore), people were telling Blizz what to do and claiming that they know what's best. And my first thought is," Are they game designers? Should they be working for Blizz?" And then I couldn't believe that some people were crying about there being too many colors! Colors are a problem? But the game looks atmospherically dark, yet they've chosen gorgeous colors. Anyway - I was tired of people complaining and I had to poke fun at those who take themselves and their grievances with Blizz so seriously - especially those who think they know better than Blizz what a game needs. I can't believe that I'm explaining this out when most people out there get it, but I like you and feel you deserve an explanation.
Yes, there are some people who complain about the colors,
Thank you for admitting this. Respect for you has gone up.
It's pointed out that unnatural colors and lights are coming out of nowhere (and as the artist you say you are you should know that is a pretty bad thing to do).
Ok. This is where I take issue. "Unnatural" colors? And "light coming out of nowhere"...? Firstly, as an artist, I don't think it's a bad thing to do at all. Why does a dark fantasy game need "natural" colors? And why can't we play with light to create a moody atmosphere? Movies, games, and graphic art uses all kinds of colors and lighting that seems to come out of nowhere all the time if it suits the aesthetic of the piece. It's about having a specific effect on the viewer.
And what does "unnatural colors" even mean? All colors are natural to me. You must mean that the dungeon looks greenish and not like typical stone,...well hmmm...that to me is awesome. It's like there is poison in the air of this corrupted, evil tomb. It's much more atmospheric and alive and yet foreboding and deathlike. It's a FANTASY. If I were making a dungeon crawler game right now, I would want my dungeons to look like something new and fantastic as well. I would want to get away from drab grays and normal stone colors and try something more fatnasy-like that sticks out and creates a different mood than the dungeon crawlers of old. It's just my opinion.
And for my first post I've decided to make an image that best displays how I feel about this whole "Petitioning for a different Diablo 3 Art Direction".
Here is a little pic I made:
Thank you for your time.
LOL! Nicely done sir. You just made my lols for the day.
...and for all you haters who don't like all the colors, quit hating gheyz. Without them, teh internetz wouldn't have as many lulz.

You're the only one making "straw man" arguments, I haven't made anything like that. I've just used your logic to show how flawed your thinking on the subject is.
The only one who isn't making a point is you, and you troll other people's posts with "internet arguments" like these (misplaced anger, etc). It's funny how you made a joke about something that only you are saying, yet you claim that I've been putting words in your mouth (fingers). Go figure.
Ha. "No! I don't do that! You do that!" You are a bore liquid. It's like I'm talking to a kid who doesn't get half of what I say and rambles about things that were cleared up 10 posts ago. Just give up. We all know you're mad about a joke. Moving on.
Don't jump from one extreme to another - oh, it's a fantasy world, why would it be natural? Well, as long as it is fantasy, why not make it with zombie rabbits and tooth fairies?
Nothing moody comes out of it, it's just ridiculous, light without a source etc. There are fantasy games that stick to more logical and natural approach and yet are still fantasy.
Unnatural colors mean that they are unnatural for the current situation.
I feel your opinion is uninformed and that your points make little to no sense. You clearly didn't understand what I was talking about and you clearly understand far less about art direction than I previously thought. Sorry, but you don't have to see the source of every single light at all times on a screen in a movie or game. Go to art school and bring your argument there and see what people say. I think your notions about doing what other fantasy games do are ridiculous.
Ive looked back at your joke several times and it still looks like its made by someone who doesnt know the difference between colors, art, gothic feel or whatever...
If it was meant different than it looks, you should make it more obvius.
Well, other people get the joke and perhaps you guys just didn't get it. No biggie.
I do disagree with the petition. That's my stance. I think seeing ONE set of armor in the game and then freaking out and photoshopping that armors shoulder pads to be smaller is asinine. ONE set of armor needs smaller pads? I personally love huge fantasy armor. And there WILL be all kinds of shoulder pads in the game. If you don't like your huge ones I'm sure that a smaller set will come along as the gear in the game will be an immense stream of variety. I see that people are saying "NO! DIABLO has smaller shoulder pads as a game!" and I think that's just silly. Since when does a fantasy game have to stick to a specific shoulder pad size?
So Diablo 3 just recently got announced and shown and people are already crying? Wow, simply don't play the game if you think "the shoulder pads are too big" or "itz gotz too many colorz"
Nobody is making you play the game... that's not even released yet. Personally I dont want to look at a game that is nothing but grey. It's about time we moved away from greys and browns in video games.
Simply put - QQ more noobs.

It's not a question of better. It's a question of consistency. But you pro-skittles are so blinded by arrogance that you can't accept the fact that 50k+ people actually don't like the Diablo 3 graphics in it's current form. Oh I have an idea, how about we call you lot the Rainbow Warriors now, because you guys seem to think you're in some sort of Holy crusade of bashing every one who wants the graphic direction of D3 to change.
Just like you and others are on a holy crusade to bash Blizzards art choices and designs and get them to change.

Ha. So I'm making fun of people's "rights"? How are "rights" involved? I'm just making fun of the PEOPLE. I've said this before in a previous post and I even explained why I am poking fun. People's rights have nothing to do with it...so another moot point from you.
It's called a joke. If you and the other people want to read into it, claim I made a statement I didn't and the refute it, then that's ok. That's called a straw man argument. Look it up.
That's the same thing. Learn to comprehend.
Ha. More like Blizzard vs. you three. Guess who already won?
I am a fairly average drawer and it would take me minutes to rough out a couple of characters in photoshop using my tablet, barely longer than it would take to find an image. If I were practiced at it it would be much faster to draw some quick characters in a rough manner than find the image. A couple of hours? I think not.
Anyhow, not like it matters, your "joke" got old after the first bunch of idiotic 12 year olds spouted it. Plenty around here are really sick of hearing the same idiots saying the petition is about black and white color and thinking the term Gothic means black lipstick and eyeliner.
liquid - It has gone beyond silly with you.
Thank you for admitting this. Respect for you has gone up.
LOL! Nicely done sir. You just made my lols for the day.
...and for all you haters who don't like all the colors, quit hating gheyz. Without them, teh internetz wouldn't have as many lulz.
"We’re not just making a ‘Diablo II’ with updated 3D graphics.”
Ha. "No! I don't do that! You do that!" You are a bore liquid. It's like I'm talking to a kid who doesn't get half of what I say and rambles about things that were cleared up 10 posts ago. Just give up. We all know you're mad about a joke. Moving on.

Just like you and others are on a holy crusade to bash Blizzards art choices and designs and get them to change.
