You are fighting the legions of Hell, overcoming them with the use of magic and enchanted weapons in a world filled with undead and demons.
...Where is the realism, again?
IMO, the realism comes from....to use your words: "Hell", "magic" and "demons"....i.e. the supernatural...something that every major religion and the majority of the world believes actually exists. That is what makes it scary. If the game was called "boogeyman" instead of the name for the Christian enemy of God and author of evil, Satan...i.e "Diablo" ....it would lose a lot of its "realist" quality.
has any one ever played Baldur's Gate? that had like the best system ever. It was a weight system. Depending on your attributes you could hold so much. And since all the characters in d2 needed str for life it would made since that the stronger you were the more items you could hold. Just give each item a weight and there you go.
Strength did NOT add to health in D2. A system like this would heavily penalize casters in favor of melee classes.
Let's also scrap all the game and move forward, make Diablo a Hack and slash WoW.
Another idiot thinking WoW is the only game with one item takes up one slot...
The only game that has tetris style inventory is d2, so using one item for one slot isn't anything like WoW, its everything like every other game where you pickup items, which is a lot better. I am sick of having 5 mules just to hold my items.
I don't know why this is even a thread, we already know its not going to be tetris style, we already saw the inventory screen. I think its better like that, sure we don't see the same art but I would rather them spend time making armor look better than the inventory icon look good. I want armor look to be dependant on the armor not the "weight" of the armor. I would much rather have each piece of armor have a different look than have cool inventory art.
You want a realistic game, but you still want to be able to carry two polearms on your left pocket, a couple broadswords in ur right one and a full plate armor in your backpack while doing some amazing fighting moves ... c'mon people.
I don't think anyone wants a realistic game per se....I think the argument is that certain elements of realism make the game more immersive and promote the suspension of disbelief. By mixing real with the unreal at critical points, the game is able to suck you in, and you get those holy-gaming-grail moments where you forget that your sitting in front of your computer. If you disagree with me, I don't think you have ever slammed your freshly dropped Tal's Armor into your inventory just to listen to the sound.
This is what make diablo so nice, you need to think. You need to choose what you take with you and what you leave there. This add to the claustrophobic atmosphere.
I agree.
On a similar note, I hope that they alter storage units so we don't end up needing mule accounts like in D2.
Or at least they could let us mail between our characters or something to hold stuff.

"The gaming public now has focus on Diablo again, and with it comes the modern-age of trolling and jackassery."
I don't like the new system. For reasons regarding realism.
People have argued "but you could fit like 6 full plates in your last inventory, that's unrealistic!"
Not as unrealistic as being able to carry 45 full plates or whatever. It's absurd. And I don't think any little belt bags would be able to hold anything more than loose change or some rings, not huge axes and armor.
Plus, the tetris style added an extra aspect of strategy.

Yes, the Tetris inventory DID make the game more immersive. But guess what? It WAS NOT fun running around sticking all ur extra stuff on different characters. That was the worst part of Diablo for me because you keep fighting and getting stuff, then you have to stop and stash shit. I like the direction Blizz is going in of non-stop hack n slash.

"And the Evil that was once vanquished shall rise anew! Wrapped in the guise of man shall he walk amongst the innocent, and terror shall consume they that dwell upon the earth! The sky shall rain fire, and the seas will become as blood! The righteous shall fall before the wicked, and the lord of creation shall tremble before the burning standards of Hell!"

OK so here is what I hate most of the "1 item per slot inventory": Let's say you got 20 different potions, in the "tetris inventory" it they would take 20 slots which is not that much. In the "1 item per slot inventory" they would take 20 slots too, but 20 slots in that inventory will take you whole space because different items can not be stocked. And I doubt Blizzard would make it possible to stock different items because it will be too confusing having 20 different items in one slot.
I don't see the 'confusing' factor there. if they keep the one slot/1 item style, I'm almost positive they'll allow certain items to be stacked.

The thing is that stuffing things in your inventory ala Tetris isn't real at all, it's just a minigame that some may enjoy and some may hate.
Remember that the reason that Blizz done the new system is because they thinks that the player will enjoy better his time slaying monsters than fitting things in the inventory and doing town runs.
This isn't an "either or" scenario though. The added dimension of "items with sizes which correspond to reality" can be synergized with non-stop action. I'm all for expandable inventory slots/bags.
The problem with the tetris inventory "mini game" is that no one played it. There was no "I'll pick up this instead of that" there was just pick up everything that fits, portal to town stash/sell and come back. Then when you get full in your stash make a private game with a friend and transfer all your stuff to a billion specialized mules.
My biggest worry and it looks like a lot of others in this thread is that the items are going to lose their tangible feel by having tiny icons. I stand by my earlier statement that if there were a way to right click an item and see some nice big item art that this would preserve that feel.
1) Because it's unique and you won't find that system in any other games except from Diablo 2 Clones (and maybe Resident Evil? I never played it tho)
2) It's realistic, it limits you to keep only the important stuff and adds their size to the math.
3) It actually makes you think! "Now where would I put this?"
On the other hand...
1) How do you carry items without a backpack? It's not realistic eiterway so who gives a damn.
2) It makes the game flow, less time for struggles with inventory, more time to bash monsters.
I still prefer the tetris idea, although the new system has it's good points.
I had concern about the inventory when the gameplay trailer was shown on the WWI.
For a diehard D2 fan like me, I really enjoyed the way items are shown nice and big and to an extent, proportional to what they're suppose to look like. The reason I'm concern about having 1 square Axe or 1 square polearm is that it kills the joy of COLLECTING ITEMS!
The reason I played D2 over and over again is because of MAGIC FIND, I dnno why, but the joy of finding unique items is jst pure bliss. And now looking at these 1 squared Axe in the gameplay trailer, it killed the whole point... if everything were the same size, it'll might as well be looking at a whole inventory of potions..., which kills the fun of item collection where the prize is the ITEM itself, instead of the gameplay... which im sure won't even last long with all the talk from Blizzard about "game will be very fast paced"
The old diablo inventory had stackable items. What does stackable items have to do with the type of inventory? BAD poll. It leads people into thinking "you have to have the wow-style inventory to have stackable items" False.
Lol idc what the invintory is I just wanna beat up them demons from Hell.

But I have to admit the Inventory tetris did make D2 more of a mental game.

I got tired of having to play with my inventory and stash all the time.
I would welcome the ability for gems, runes, etc of similar items to stack in my inventory and stash as well.
