This name has gotten me kicked out of every MMO out there. I don't know about you, but I like to maintain my grip on reality rather than escape into a fantasy world as someone I'm not.
Funny though, what if my name is Dick? I'm being discriminated against!
I'd prefer if there wasn't any censorship in regard to names. Personally I use RP names, but if you want to be xxSePhIrOtH95xx, that's fine with me; I'll do my best to PK you.

If you don't have anything good to say, say it on the internet.
i don't mind having no limits on names, although names like xxBiTcHfUcKc0KK7iTxx are really unnecessary. And having all the Xs on either side of ur name looks kinda stupid, i could never understand why people did that.
- A name cannot start with a double non-vowel. (NOT: Bbazooka, Zzozz)
For playable characters only? Because Sszark the Burning is a Super Unique monster in Diablo II.
- The name may not hold underscores, apostrophes, dashes etc. (NOT: The_Man, Kiss'butt, My-name)
Not sure I agree with that one. Abd Al-Hazir is in the Diablo world and that name is cool and Qual-Kehk is a man at arms in Harrogath. So dash is present. and I do not think it's the ' symbol that makes name silly, it's the words people put either side. kiss'butt is stupid, but I find, Gul'dan or Kil'Jaeden to be very cool names.
- The name may not hold partially or match an important in-story name. (NOT: Illarius, Opabaala, Thebutcher).
Not sure I like that one. Azrael is not a story character, but the last part of the name is the same as Tyrael.
- The name is limited to 16 characters. (NOT: Illustrialadomisticaan, Anguishinarachniara)
18 works better for me. I can always choose not to use the maximum number of 18. Orgrimm Doomhammer is 18 characters.

I think it's important that we get to choose our own names.

No, Blizzard may not propose names. Simply because of the bad US habit to sue any thing/any one...
It is too easy for a computed name to end up with a sound that would be offending to some one, by instance, a program will randomly associates letters and can do something like "Eatlher" : it would trigger class actions because it sounds like "Hitler"...
Beside, the way you name yourself is the way you are, it is what a Role Playing game is made for... Hence, if you like not-so beautiful names, it is you, and it is up to you... and any one is free to say "Berk..." how ugly it is... I agree with Doppleganger on this.
Just for faciliting the reading of a name, only letters, spaces, and perhasp 1 or 2 digits should be allowed. As pointed by another poster, WoW policy for names seems to be appropriate... (http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?articleId=20368)
They need to use the WoW naming policy, which basically says, only letters are allowed, no profanities, no leetspeek, etc, so you can't have names like "i_r_tehleetzor" or any name that is inappropriate for a fantasy game.
Agreed. I think WoW's naming policy is great and works.

- The name may only hold one capital letter, only at the start. (NOT: masterX, dOOm)
- The name may not hold obvious or hidden words which have a nature of profanity or hint towards such. (NOT: Bipussyla, Cocksuxer, Kunnt)
- The name may not hold obvious leet content. (NOT: Roflcopter, Leetwurior, keelsforguld)

While I agree with your intent, I think you're taking it too far. The names should just be acceptable names, I wouldn't mind if Arthas came up to me in Diablo 3. I would mind however if <>4rThaS<> appeared.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
But what about names like these? "Qual-Kehk"?
And are spaces alowed?
JayCrimson's rules are insane if you ask me, infact i rather have a "Jeriaeounia" or a "Zzozz" or a "Bipussyla" or a "Illustrialadomisticaan" or a "Illarius" running around then a "JayCrimson". Imo.
Well, if we compare it to WoW, then you would not be able to name a character Qual-Kehk. But that's not due to the aformentioned Naming Policy, but due to the programming. You cannot have spaces, dashes and multiple capitalizations, but things like é, â and the like are allowed. I cant recall if apostrophes are allowed or not, I think they aren't.
But that's WoW, not D3, and I do not think the same naming restrictions will apply.

As many here would generally agree with that, many of us long for more creative names.
Illarius sounds so much cooler to me than Rock_hard_abs or Bimbozon.
But I do not want to sit there for hours on end "rolling" names in a generator. I want to make up my own name, and I am sure others do to. However, the names some people use leave much to be desired.

I say none just because I dislike censorship in any of its manifestations. I think there could be varying degrees of name restrictions to different servers. For example, RP servers would have you follow strict rules to names. Whereas other servers may have no requirements and you can be RoFlCaUsT6000000 all day long(that's a 6 million)
While that would work, it's not very likely as while the Diablo series does have Role Playing elements, it is not it's primary "genre". Also from as best I can tell, Diablo 3 will retain the same system that the previous titles had, 4 giant realms, as opposed to multiple smaller servers like WOW.
SO you can't really get one area with stricter restrictions and one area with none or less.

THis is a really interesting question. I don't really know the answer to this one. As much as I like to make characters called SexuallyFit, it does get quite annoying when everyone is pretty much at that same level.
I'm not going to vote yet. I'll need to think about this on.

Federer lost Wimbledon. Why? Becase none of you bastards cheered for him...
I don't see why people shouldn't have any name they chose. I picked the bobby bacon one. Also, blizzard should have an option that if online, you don't want your name to be seen. Your name will show up as Dark Wonderer. That would be mysterious, cool, and most of all it would keep the newbies from messaging you for free stuff. Ever had that problem on Diablo II ? I have,it's horribly annoying. No matter how much you squelch them, the next day or even the next hour....you hear them yet again. It makes you want to not go on battle net. Colored names and different font names would also be a cool upside. I don't think this will happen but who knows?

I'm falling apart inside; watching you mourn over my death.
how is anything gamma said going to backfire on him later? are you serious? there are probably hundreds of people daily posting shit on the internet joking about assassinating bush... you should only be worried if you actually plan on doing it, cause then u lose the advantage of surprise. as far as names go, i think anything should be allowed including profanity. shit, isnt the game gonna be rated m anyway? and no i didnt name my zon big boobs. her name was cheesetits.

Diablo is Anarchy, from the economy to the names, don't change that 2
