I see a lot of people whining about the colors, but i haven't seen anyone talk about the overall atmosphere about the games.
atmosphere is not just about the graphics.
it includes sound and music.
Diablo 1
The game was amazing. Storyline, characters, were memorable (wirt, cain, the drunk, akara, griswold, etc.)(even the dead guy at the entrance of the first few levels.)
The game also had very memorable enemies (king leroic, butcher)Im sure everyone remembers the first time you saw the butcher ("AAhhh Fresh Meat" , shit your pants) and king leroic ("The Warmth of Life has entered my Tomb ... prepare yourselfMortal ... to serve my Master for Eternity !! HAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAR")
Memorable because it was scary, though that might be because i played it when i was young.
But the most important part about diablo 1 that diablo 2 didnt have was the SOUND.
Does anyone remember the music of the caves??? - monsters moaning in the background.
Diablo 1 was eerie.
Diablo 2 was not.
diablo 2 had many more npcs. But does anyone remember anything about them? i sure as hell dont. The voice acting was shitty. The music was HORRIBLE.
The first time you enter hell in diablo 1 way different than the first time you enter the river of flame in diablo 2.
diablo 1 - "O.. my . . god.. theres bodies everywhere, the music is making me crap my pants, there are naked succubus (spelling?) that YELL when they die. This IS hell.
diablo 2 - you enter the river of flame - "............ ok....... oh wow... theres bugs in here.... and fire...... yep lots of fire..... and the music is............ ok........... thats nice."
TLDR version.
Diablo 3 needs sound and music like diablo 1 NOT LIKE DIABLO 2.
Please post your thoughts on this.
I want to know if anyone feels the same way!
Dully noted a thousand and one times over. Check the other posts before making your own thread first. Heck, this was stated on wikipedia ages ago when D2 releases.
Thanks for this post. You're completely right. I really forgot some of the things that made Diablo great. The moaning of demons in the background really was great, and D2 didn't have that. Hell in Diablo > Hell in D2. Everyone in D1 was memorable, like you said, Griswold, Wirt, Cain, Akara... the drunk was hillarious. It's not that D2 had bad voice actors, it's just Cain and Tyreal were the only interesting characters (and maybe a couple of the guys who you could gamble from).
If D3 could combine the best of D1 and D2, along with putting it in the awesome 3D style they've already started, and the revamping of characters and skills, and the streamlining of gameplay... it could become the best game of its time (imo the best game right now is Portal)
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Ranger - Ranged Weapon Mastery (fire a bow or javelins like a machine gun!), Traps (MK style!), Pets (lions, tigers, and bears oh my!) - physical damage based
Demonologist - Bone Spells (Necro style!), Avatar (shapeshift into a demon!), Furies (evil spirits that hang around you, giving party bonuses) - mix of physical damage and magic
LEAP ATTACK!!!!! PLAGUE OF TOADS!!!!!
SLOW TIME!!!!!
i think thats what Pardo ment when he said "We want the game to have dark atmosphere, not dark colors". Sound plays a much more important role than just the looks. Everyone i know that played Diablo 1 said the exact same things about how great the music was.
Even when Diablo II was released the graphics werent top of their time, but they served their cause.
The sequel works just well with gore (cutting a zombie in half and it still crawls to you bleeding but willing to hit you looks awesome!).
There's this music piece in Diablo II once you enter the Blood Moor that is just badass. The atmosphere in Diablo II was just marvelous, and the way this guy undermines it is simply insulting and quite literally primitive. There are a lot of things that set Diablo II aside. Here you are focusing on strong points in the first, and focusing on the weak points in the second. You have outstanding music in Diablo II. The Harem? The first act's music? Yes, they didn't pull THAT much of an effort on it, but it was suitable and great nevertheless. I doubt the demo they showed us had the finalized music pieces, and I sure as hell wouldn't like it if the atmosphere stayed as is, with bright colors, the sun being up when you're outside, and having such a wide view of everything. The thing I'm worried about is if they don't have a map that'd show up like in Diablo II. Now that'd suck some major donkey behind.
The music, sounds, and effects are amazing. I can see how some people can complain about the non-gothic extreme graphics, but the atmosphere is great.
For example, when those cultist summong that best, and the skeleton rises and the flesh starts covering him. That's epic, in music and the cool visualization of it.

akara wasnt in d1 you mean adria yes i have nothing to do..
I'd like to see the "scariness" of Act 3 in d3. Remember walking into a cave, thinking it was safe, then BAM what seemed and endless onslaught of giant spiders attacked you? Or the constant attacks of Fetish?
D2 definitely had some great area though, like the Arcane Sanctuary. (at least I thought so)
I'd also like to see more cutscenes in d3. Maybe some more hidden backstory.

There are some some pretty cool songs in diablo 2.
Im sorry if my post sounded like an insult to diablo 2. Diablo 2 was a great game that i played for a long long long long time.
My point was that the two games definitely had different moods.
I liked the mood in diablo 1 way better.
Was wondering if anyone else felt the same way.
To those complaining about the atmosphere of D3, watch the gameplay trailer again, not the small version on the official website, the one with 800MB.
There's no mistake here the atmosphere is definately a match for Diablo.
There's so much gruesome details, there a bit more cartoony but they are still awesome
Lol, I just notice that some zombies even try to attack you after you sliced them in half and that you can see the SiegeBreaker monster lurking in the shadows when they crossed the bridge after finding Cain.
