Would Diablo let himself be slaughtered and soulstone ripped out twice? No he would want to be murdered at least a third time. (I hope you get my point).
You seem to be misunderstanding the point of themes and motifs. Diablo cannot help but be slain at some point, and when he is, his evil lives on. Diablo 2 was, in many ways, a thought-provoking game. Did you ever pause and wonder how evil everyone was that played it? How greedy and insatiable their hunger was for godly loot? What an experience that was! Did it ever dawn on you how helpless Diablo and Baal were, and that we were instead the hungry evil endlessly hunting them down? It's psychology like this that makes for a dark menacing game. Those kinds of themes I had only seen in movies until I played D2.
Ob, I can tell you are a person who doesn't ponder deeper meaning or design philosophy, so you will get no more response.
The reason that Blizzard would choose to dumb down the game and take out the D2 looting system is because it would appeal to a greater range of people. The "casual gamers". This of course makes more money, but ruins the uniqueness of play and competitive spirit. I suppose we are still in an age of gaming where competition is last on the list and economics on the very front. A niche market isn't a bad thing, it means that the game has unique elements that appeal to a certain audience. It means that the mechanics aren't the same rehashed safety insured crap that you see in WoW. It's like recess with incredibly strict enforcement. I'd like a little freedom, tbh.

First of all:
This thread is about a looting system, and you replied to the only comment I made that wasn't a direct rebuttal to the flaws of your beloved FFA system. Also I am drunk and sleepy. Finally it is a game, and one of the most straight forward themed games out there: Good fighting evil. I would rather ponder deeper meaning in life or social interactions, and not a game that I enjoy for the storyline and smashing hundreds of demons.

---- And the evil that was once vanquished shall rise anew! ----
I like individual, ffa was fun in its day but it really got too irritating, I like to focus on beating the **** out of hells minions rather than hugging the boss to carpel-tunnel-inducing-spam-click-fest to try get loot faster.
I like the loot system on diablo 2. but then again. i'm not always fast enough.
When diablo 3 gets a system who drops individualy i don't want those drops to be based on your character...
The world isn't fair, so why is the world of warcraft fair? and why will the world of diablo be fair? People do not want or need things to be fair.
I don't care how many hours you put into the game, BUT it isnt the boss encounters, the story, the loot, or even the playstyle that made diablo great. It was the underlying feeling of loss or unfairness. I'd go so far to compare it to the same feeling you get when you gamble. To have the loot drop right infront of you and 7 other people... and just miss it. You can say all you want but the psychology behind that will mess with your brain, which is why people still play d2 imo. Especially on hardcore mode.
To lose your character forever what a kick in the ass. But remember what happens when all your "hard work" vanished? Your heart starts beating really fast. You slam alt f4, hoping that when you open the game you won't be dead. You go into that state of shock. And then like gambling and losing, you say, lets try again!
So to take out one of these aspects for certain (apparently) is killing part of the culture that I really enjoyed in d2.
Fooke, I agree in many respects. Another huge problem with the individual drop system is that crowd control characters will dominate all other classes in their ability to get items from non-boss enemies, unless each enemy drops loot for each player. In this case, the economy will inflate very quickly and working in small groups will be obsolete to working with the largest group possible.
The best way to handle this situation would be to have boss drops individual and normal enemy drops similar to D2. In fact, there should be a separate voting choice for this option on this poll.
I think this thread is useless considering Blizzard has already implemented the indivdual looting system. UNLESS they decided to change there whole loot system based on this thread.

My goodness, and my fortress, my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and He in whom I trust…
I'd have to say FFA because it made somewhat of a separate game to see who could grab the most stuff in a short amount of time. Sometimes you don't grab it because of lag but I see it being very fun.
I prefer FFA but individual is good too. To me, if they make anything like they did in D2, it will be good...i wouldn't have cared if they had taken the exact same graphics, gameplay, and all the other stuff from D2 and made it into a new D3 (new content) lol...love that game and still play it.
according to the actual interview (which I just heard now) The blizz employee says that when a boss dies, each player gets an individual loot drop just for them. I'm hoping that means only for bosses, and the rest is FFA.
Else we will have way too many good items, which will probably ruin the economy... unless they shaft the drops of everything.. which would ruin our experience.
Agree with Obalobex. They are trying to cut down on the frustration-level and cheesiness that pervades Diablo II to this day, where people with faster connections or better computers can take loot. Sure, you can solo most things, and even the devs have said you can solo the entire game but the true fun if cooperative play. And having individual loot means everyone is that much more enthusiastic to play as a team knowing that they cannot be cheated out of loot by someone who is quicker at looting or whatever the conditions may be. You're still getting your loot with this system and if MF plays a role in Diablo III, then your personal loot may be a lot better than someone else's depending on your level of MF.
Yeah I agree with what a lot of people have said...FFA was great back in the day, but it's time to move on; games have evolved, as have playing styles which makes the FFA looting system redundant and old skool (in a bad way).
Previous - Fun because you get to steal some godly item infront of the guy who did all the works eye's, or because you get to be jealous of the unique warhat that dropped someone else snagged.
This is Diablo, i assume the risk of being ninja'd if i can do the same... the frustation/rewarding feeling is what make the loot system in D2 quite unique. I dont care if they want the loot to be individual for bosses as long they still drop shit when they die... the individual loot would be some sort of consolation prize ''weel.. i didnt got that super swrd of mass destruction, but i still got this tiny chip topaz''.
Get real, folks, the diablo you all knew is dead, a few years ago i said right here in this forum that D3 had a pretty good chance of being blizzard first bust (i was flamed to death ofc), and what you know, its not even beta and its already looking that way.
I think the decision for the new looting system is a good one. The old ffa system made you really depend on your class and where you were on the screen for managing to get any good drops. Plus, those idiots would run that program that would auto-pick up everything for you, and give you no chance.
Now what I'd really like them to do is enable loot linking in the both bnet chat and the game's chat, to facilitate trading of items. Much easier to ask if a friend wants a new sword you just found if you can link it to him rather than go back to town and clumsily put it into trade.

Exactly! This is good news for team play

Or plays ranged squishy classes that don't stand next to bosses.
