I keep reading these posts about people wanting the original developers back for D3. I thought about this for a while and thought, why?
The original dev's all went off and formed their own company called Flagship studios. They proceeded to create a game of their vision of the future style of Diablo 3 and to be frank, it sucked. If they stayed and created Diablo 3 in the same style/respect as HG:L, then I think a ton of people would be extremely disapointed. So if you really want the old dev's back, go play HG:L and ask yourself if you want developers who would settle for that low of a quality of game.
So I must give my regards to Blizzard and the new developement team for doing the right thing and keeping the original overall feel and style of Diablo 2 and upgrading the technology while keeping the familiarity. Otherwise, we might be playing Diablo 3: Helllgate.
I agree with everything until the end.. alot of people dont think it really does have the same overall feel of diablo 2... atmosphere any who for those who wants to get technical with words. You bring up a good point tho.. they did make hellgate... im so torn apart on what to think now!
Well to be fair, Hellgate London was a different approach to a mix of MMO and other elements. I'm sure if some of the guys were with Blizzard at this juncture (with pretty much unlimited funding due to the HUGE success of WoW and upcoming SC-2 as well as all the other experienced devs) then you would get an even better product.
Tough to judge them based on their first game as a new studio compared to Blizzard which is raking in tons of money from WoW and is long-established.
If they wanted to create a game like diablo 2, then why didnt they set the camera the same as Diablo 2 but try to make it 3d? If Diablo 3 were in the 3d style of say, WoW, I would be less likely to want to play it.
The atmosphere hasnt been established fully yet either. The storyline creates atmosphere and all we see is a barbarian running through a temple not knowing any pretense at all. It would be extremely simple for Blizzard to set the ambiance with a kick ass cinematic before that. But I do agree that the artwork is somewhat lacking, but Blizzard developes all the content before they polish it.
except for the artwork everything is perfect~~sounds, gamepaly, physics, amazing details interaction, etc.
Artists are very important, they can effort a game or destroy one~~~

DIFFERENT ARTISTS MAKES DIFFERENT GAME!!NEW CLASS of WoW above.
Some of the Diablo team formed Castaway Entertianment. They were working on a game called Djinn. http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=vK9mJVsF_Do
They dissolved after financial problems.

That game looks horrible compared to what Blizzard just showed us with pre-developement D3.

Good post. Some people need to get with the times.
In the gameplay trailer, things definitely look dark and evil. Just because the colors are more than grey, black, brown, and red, doesn't mean that things are happy go-lucky. Things look a lot crisper now, which is fine.
Well North started the game but dissolved and Blizzard was forced to basically restart production on D3 because they wanted a new style for the game. We'll likely never know what North had developed before it dissolved.
Wouldn't that be their fault for leaving?
I will admit.. I'd have loved to see "Blizzard North" at the beginning of that Trailer.
I didn't like HG:L at all tho.
Kinda put dissapointment in my eyes for those guys.
The thing is that even if they stayed you'd never see "Blizzard North" at the beginning of the trailer since they wanted to assimilate Blizz North into Blizz HQ. Blizzard North is gone forever.
I read off the Diablo3 wiki page that they left because they didnt like that Blizzard was trying to merge them and that the original people were in fact in management positions and not game design at the production of Diablo 2 xpac.
I dont know what the rest of the developement team is doing as I have only heard that 5 key employee's left. That could very well mean a lot of the remaining 40 developers and designers still remain and Blizzard and have an influence over Diablo 3.
Less than 1/4 of the Blizzard North people with credits on "Diablo II" went to Flagship. Also, only TWO people from Blizzard North with a credit on Diablo II are working in Irvine as of the past year!
Just a few of the names who did NOT go to Flagship AND are not currently working in Irvine:
Both people named as designers (Hedlund and Sexton) -
The artist who created "Diablo" (Okamura) -
The original animator of "Diablo" (Haas) -
The lead programmer (Seis) -
The entire in-game music/audio team (Stone, Petersen, Uelman) -
The character artists behind the Paladin, Sorceress, and Barbarian and countless monsters (Johnson, Dashow) -
The illustration genius behind the UI art (Boos) -
All three level designers (McAuley, Scandizzo, Wilson)
Additionally, Bill Roper never had an office at Blizzard North during the making of any of those releases - he moved soon AFTER they were released. The idea that "Well, Hellgate was a flop, so it must have been Blizzard all along that made it..." is unfounded and stupid. The sad reality is that Blizzard North was basically cast to the wind and can never be reformed in any real way.

But plenty of WoW megashoulderpads, rainbows and Disney music!
And none of this: http://www.eatmybomb.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/Diablo-Portal.jpg
=(
But it's only the first demo! And we did get plenty of blood from dying monsters, and a barbarian that was freaking ripped in half by the "mini-boss," who was bigger than any of the bosses in the previous Diablo games.
I think we just gotta be patient
