The items in the inventory are not animated.. how would a full tetris-style system impact performance?
The requirements for animation are almost a non-issue. However there are other aspects which do need to be considered. This includes mesh detail, individual texturing, as well as various vertex/pixel shading effects. And depending on what items there are, how detailed they are at that level of visibility, and whether or not developers decide to utilize a particular Dx10 enhancement, one could also consider geometry shaders for that list.
All of which needs to be considered for each item contained within the inventory. As one increases the number stored to perhaps a dozen, two dozen, or three, one begins to imagine the impact performance would have in one way or another. The confession of one of the developers on the performance expense of just four Wraiths appearing at once, does not appear to bode well for this particular scenario.
I was a proponent of the new item organisation system, but after seeing those screenshots from WoW, I was reminded that it is a horrible and ugly system that consumes too much time.
Sure, it's more efficient when it's all organised, but just taking the time to organise it is a long and dull process and every item you get has to be resorted/taken out everytime you fill up a new slot.
why not a more original/realistic system where everything goes by the scaled in-game size (no squares involved) and the items just can't overlap. Like how i think they did stickers in the japanese version of the wii's super smash bros (not sure, only saw the concept video and never played the japanese version).

Like the UO system? I hated that
You end up with things like this.
Only 1000 times worse. You'd have so much crap piled on top of one another you couldn't find what you wanted half the time.
if it's holding piled items or looks anything like that then that's far from my idea, i said no overlapping. and at the risk of people hating the idea because they think it's cutesie because it is in this one game, i made a link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=gDa86Ok_Bvk

Fuzz, "It" will never be World of Diablo... Its too Gorey and even if they end up making a game " World of Diablo" It will never be like World of Warcraft >.< go back and troll some war hammer or something>.<.
are the people hating on WoW (i dont support it but i don't have baseless hate) doing it for no reason or because they want diversity, because the latter is the only one i can think of and it can all too easily be argued down to the former. I just don't get it. Sales records don't lie- lots more people like WoW than most if not all of the other games. I don't support diablo turning into WoW but its no good reason to bitch.

Fifty million adults smoke in the US.
Everyone should smoke.
It's called argumentum ad populum, but just because a large number of people does something doesn't make it a good thing.
WoW symbolises the dumbing down of gaming to make it easier for "casual" players, which is another word I hate and need to add to my list. The weird policies and backwards logic don't make it better than any other MMO on the market.
The less D3 "takes" from WoW, the better. I like having to put a little bit of intellect into my game experience. Involving players mentally can be just as good as drawing them in through too much user-friendliness.
very good first point veritech. Except, out of the fifty million that smoke maybe two think you should which ruins the theory of argumentum ad populem. But that whole invalid thing about making it easier for casual gamers in my opinion is opposite of the truth considering how the game celebrates time spent playing over intellect and reflex and demands $15 based on how long you want the game to work which commands getting the most out of your dollars.
edit: now that i think about it i really can't say argumentum ad populem was ruined as a plausible argument considering some of the subscribers could be paying though they dont like the game

No thanks, give me back tetris.
