Don't know if any of you guys remember this... (its amazing the obscure things I remember...) back in February 2006, diabloii.net reported that Blizzard supposedly purchased around 1500+ servers. So I did some searching and found the little news thingy teehee

Blizzard Bolster Server Infrastructure? - Elly [0:53:PST] Throwing yet more fuel on the D3 rumour fire is this blog entry by Rahul Sood, tech writer and president of VoodooPC. "Blizzard is rumored to have purchased around 1500+ new HP servers all based on AMD Opteron 64 technology. I am guessing Blizzard will combine the power of these servers to improve the gaming experience for World of Warcraft users worldwide – as well Blizzard may also be preparing for their next major online game. Perhaps they are preparing for the next generation Diablo or something of the like."
There is a severe lag issue with World of Warcraft (due to some freshly added content) and they currently have 295 servers (133 US, 162 Europe) in place so it's not unreasonable to think that these superior servers are to replace the existing ones (pretty please). 295 is still some leap to 1,500 and even if they doubled the number of servers assigned to WoW in preparation for the Burning Crusade (Xpack) that still leaves plenty left over. Assuming they've not bought the rest to decorate their offices that leaves Starcraft: Ghost and an unnanounced project. I don't even know what Ghost will use but it's certainly not 900 Opterons. Of course this all hinges on the rumour being fact but there appears to be some credence to it. Thanks to Actiontrip.com and Silver Sinijärv."
What I want to know is... Is this rumor true and did Blizzard ever say what they were planning on doing with them, are they all for WoW? Anyone know anything?

Yes i remember that quite well, its quite old too...
Don't forget for Each WoW Server name... there are MULTIPLE servers per server...
You have The Servers for Eastern Kingdom, Kalimdor, Outlands, then you have the Servers for all the Instances, then you have all the Servers for Battlegrounds.
So its not 1 new server per WoW server, its multiple. Blizz has said on numerous occasions that each "server" has many additional ones with it.
its around 4 servers for each "server" in WoW.
Old Kingdoms, Battlegrounds, Outland, Instance Server.
295x4= 1180. now add 1 more per server for Wrath of the Lich King and you get pretty close to the sum you had.
