Asking because I'm honestly not sure. How can you tell if one of your team mates in a pub is a bot? Sometimes I suspect I see a bot, someone who's not doing much just kinda following the group. Is there any sure way to tell? Thanks in advance..
Best sure fire way I can think of is to ask them a question in party chat (not private message).
"Hey Derptato, what build are you running?"
If you get no response they are either botting or don't feel like responding. Some of the bots will be programmed to do things like respond to private messages with generic responses, but are very incapable of giving specific answers to a public chat directed at them.
That's a good idea.. but what I was wondering is, is there anyway to tell through a bots behavior? I often hear of people on the forums talking about reporting users for botting and always wondered what it was that made them sure enough to do that. I guess with all the talk of botting lately I'm getting a little paranoid, lol. I will try the question in chat though.

There isn't a lot of public botting because it increases the risk of getting reported so not a lot of people do it. The bot behavior is is hard to spot when it comes to things like moving. What I would watch out for in a public game is a character taking the same path on a single map. Bots are usually programmed with maps so they tend to walk the same directions in town since the map and the object they are trying to get to never changes it's location whereas a mob out in say the fields of misery will change because it moves so the bot will just move accordingly. Real players tend to go the same direction for speed farming but very rarely do the exact same thing to the T for more than a couple of rift clears. Best bet is to just sit there for a minute or two after a clear and see if the perform the same movement over and over again. If it looks suspicious then ask them the public question. if you get no response it's a safe bet it's a bot and you should report it to the hacks team so they can investigate whether it's true or not.
Bots don't hang back and follow. Bots do things like clear the whole rift with no regard for players and sometimes have strange movement habits that dont appear human. What you probably have is a leech. Someone wjo is undergeared and getting carried may behave like you described. Hope that helps. Oh and most bots are run solo to hide their obviously not human behaviors
One thing to try is to place two (2) account-bound legendaries on the ground about 5-10 game yards apart. If the toon goes back and forth trying to pick them up, it is likely a bot. Its kinda funny to watch. (There may be other types of bot mecanics out there, but that is how I found a former clan-mate out; emphasis on "former.")

Sounds like a solid 60% of the people I've pub gamed with. There have been times where I could swear another player was a bot until they finally typed something.

They do the same grift lvl over and over (what their script allows).

bots don't go on public games ..
Thanks for the replies everyone. It was some helpful information
I see more and more bots in public games aswell, especially this last week.
It may be that the ones who botted privately has found out that they lag behind the public botters (xp multipliers).
And also that they maybe they dont fear the banhammer that much at this point.

I find I can mostly tell because they behave like weird little idiots. But this is not based on just D3, its any game I have seen them in.
they move very mechanically they do no respond well to chat and whispers etc,
there is video footage of bots running through d3 and the ones I watched out of curiosity, they zip around like terminators...
and yes due to the fast paced streamlined run and gun play style that permeates through D3, it might be pretty tricky to spot....
I play public games all the time and I have never seen a bot as o usually talk to everyone.
