This is really out of hand. Let me make a simple comparison: would you all have flipped out if you'd seen a gameplay trailer for Diablo II showing the Arcane Sanctuary? It's a very colorful, "mystical" environment that doesn't resemble Diablo I's setting/theme at all. Would you have taken this one example and drawn a conclusion about the entire game?
The art design panel specifically stated that each dungeon would be designed WITH THAT DUNGEON'S THEME in mind. Some dungeons won't be dark and gothic and dripping with macabre. Some will! That's what makes an interesting game. I don't understand why you think taking a photoshop filter and applying to everything will somehow make things fit the theme better. It's a bad idea.
Guys if we could just hold our emotions together till next week and see if stuff has improved we'll have a much better chance on making a point. I repeat: TWO measly days for gods sake! Hold your horses for a tiny second :-/
Wait until next week, if they have more to show us (more of the same) then go as vocal as you want.
I agree.
Our best bet, is to stay calm, stop acting like a bunch of whiny victims, organize and explain what we don't like. We have a better shot of getting a response, and explanation, if we don't act like we've been stabbed in the back by getting a game we've been waiting 10 years for.
And for anyone that thinks the graphics should stay exactly as they are : Thats cool, but stop acting like sharing ideas will result in the end of the world.

Mate you don't understand. We all want changing environments, and D3 will give us that light or dark. Its the ART STYLE that we have the problem with. Art style does not change throughout a game, it is consistant. Art style is the hand drawn, flat, watercolor textures you've been seeing. Art style is that low quality and silly looking lion statue. This stuff will all be consistant through the game. Sure, colors will change, the environment will change. But the art style won't.
Take a screenshot of D2, anywhere. And grab a D3 screenie, any one. And look at them. Yes there are 7 years of graphical enhancement there but you'll also see that D3 is a much different art style. It is, in my opinion, a bad art style.
LoL, good one! Originally the graphics or 'WoW-ish-ness' of the graphics were a little disappointing but atleast we now know D3 is on the way. I'm sure (or rather hope) they do make the graphics more realistic/dark further into development... fingers crossed.
What we have seen so far could simply be the act 1. This also means we might have a shot at affecting the future acts with less blurry cartoon style and more gothicness.
ACT 1?! It was a 5 minute intro dungeon and a little forested area. Not even act 1. Why would you conclude that the game adheres to any sort of style based on that? Also, think about this: the entire idea is that demons haven't been seen in 20 years. In previous Diablo games, you were wading through areas that had been overrun by demons where people had been LIVING and were massacred.
The gameplay trailer is, presumably, of an abandoned cathedral at the dawn of demons' first appearance in 20 years. Why WOULD there be mutilated corpses everywhere, a macabre theme, etc? Don't you think the lighter edge is the perfect way to more clearly denote a descent into darkness as the game progresses from a time of peace and calm to a demon invasion?
The art panel was even quite clear about the fact that each dungeon was designed SPECIFICALLY to help tell the story. Think about that, and it makes perfect sense based on the above paragraph. You can be dead sure that there will be macabre, gothic dungeons and themes in Diablo III -- but the entire game shouldn't be needlessly filtered through a crappy photoshop redo when it doesn't make sense based on certain parts of the story to do so. Get my drift?

Guess I just have to disagree with you, then. I liked what I saw, if you think the art style is just "bad," then there's nothing I can say to that. Agree to disagree.
I'm sorry to make you feel bad, But the art style won't change. at least not in act 1 as it is finished and located already in the project leader computer (he said so in the interview) about the other acts I'm not sure...but I can guess they won't change drastically the style between cities.
Now really, it's basically second team of wow which making the game (look at the interview again the dude is part of wow creators). what do you expect it to be? blizzard north died.
We will forever rememeber them as ppl who tried to stay true to the Diablo spirit & story, not making games to please the 14 old kids out there and wow fans.
yeah the sad thing is they said a lot of crap ,and if anyone didnt hear what they were really saying
then they are too dumb to even talk to
the first dude got so nerve when he was saying NAKED it was really sad
and the another guy looked like he was about to cry (and i kinda was given me the same dumb cartony feeling that wow has)
about the thinks they told
first the Caldium city was just made up one
they said how they want it to be so dark ,gloomy, and I (at that moment) said to myself what is stoping you dumbasses
so they can make it like the good old diablo ,but they just want to play with colours because dont now why exactly something dumb
Blizzard changed within too many times to trust them completely, ppl act differently we can't help it.
Well if it was blizzard north to create the new game I wouldn't had to even enter this forum. I would've trusted them blindly!
But unfortunately it didn't happened and won't, I dealt with it!. so what now?
This new team want to please the messes, ensure their safety within the company of blizzard as well.
Who cares really of the old players 20+ 30+ 40+ let's take d1+d2 and throw their ideas to hell (:x) HEY WHAT CAN GO WRONG with wow style of game?
so green, so lively - we got good excuse as well - it's bloody 20 years after, hack even the colors of the bloody world changed...yea I understand that skeletons and such mobs living in a mushy green valley with clean water flowing, little rainbow...so cute , too cute!
WoW got so many subscribers...what really could go wrong?!
Look I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, cause after all this was presented to specially show us some areas, monster and skills maybe it was cramped too much together in too minimized area, I'm not sure.
I want to see a real game footage than I will judge fully the game.
So far it doesn't seem very much appealing with the dated (yea dated, did you see TitanQuest?) & mushy areas and art style.
but Im willing to wait..its alpha. Can you? (like you have a choice hehe)
This is what an alpha version of Starcraft looked like, when Blizzard decided to just rip directly from their Warcraft II engine.
The problem is - games today need much more gfx assets than around SC timeframe. Also SC is a different type of game with a different need for assets. There's much less content in RTS than in MMO or Action-RPG. The amount of content we've seen is not small and game's looks can be attributed to one of two things:
1. They are reusing/using abandoned WoW assets for the experimentation/prototyping, tweaking them a little to be more diablo-looking
2. This is their vision of what Diablo's art style should be.
I seriously hope it's 1) but I'm prepared for the worst option...
Being an artist myself, when making something, you really have to take some time off, to look at it on an unbiased way, just like we, the people that have never seen it before, are doing... And its easy to get caught up in "bigger, better, more colorful" when you are a perfectionist, which Blizzard devs clearly are
Some of the best art was made while in secularity in my opinion. Not while created objectively. Isn't it the experience and thought that make it so? It's just that at the time people might not be ready for that perspective.
Note though that while it may seem great to the developing team, I personally don't think that D3 makes a statement with it's current graphics.
I still think Blizzard really screwed it up this time. When making something that is next in lline and has a particular brand feel you have to remain true to the source and make sure they are related. They've stemmed too far away from this common source. If they plan on making other sequels tied to the envision of Diablo then they have to follow certain laws of succession. This is after all Diablo, not a different title.

lol it can still easily be a ranger since who said you cant shoot arrows at melee distance xD

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees
Alright, Ive talked quite a bit but didnt show my idea yet, I messed a bit with photoshop until I got the right look
IMO, you are lying to yourself if you dont prefer the darker version... That is exactly how I think of Diablo 2 in a 3D environment, more realistic, sharper, "not knowing what will come up next", having the only real light source being your character's light radius, this is Diablo, not the above version
(Ill update later if I mess with some other pics)
Ya, the bottom is 100 times better then the top pic. Perfect work man
I have said before that I have nothing wrong with the look of the game however, this is Diablo. Even in an untouched environment for 20 years it makes no sense to have everything so clean and brand new looking.
The game does not flat out look like a Warcraft game but you are absolutely delusional if you can' see how many things look like an exact copy from WoW. The armor and weapons, spell effects, textures, etc. When I look at the forgotten tombs pic I see Scholomance from WoW.
Now Diablo 3 doesn't need to be as dark as the pic above but the textures look sharper and make the environment look like it actually has had skelletons, zombies, and demons running around, the lightning effect looks much more realistic and I personally get a much more epic feel from it.
Wow! You hit the nail on the head there Frostwake! Thats exactly what i'm looking for in a D3 game. Good stuff mate. Although the likelyhood of it actually going anywhere, you should really send that render in with a link to here to blizzard. Make em at least read part of this thread.
Notice how the warm feeling of the wilderness remains? Yet, it is a hundred times more moody than the original just because of the mist and shadows! Thats what Blizzard has to focus on. Considering a mere photoshop change is enough to make the game look great, Id say the engine is perfectly capable, its just that Blizzard really was not envisioning it the right way
I love you....:(.....:P.....:D

Because Blizzard wasn't as famous and didn't have such a great reputation, people correctly laughed at it as "Warcraft in Space".
Now it's happening again, and new heroes have to step up and stop them.
lol
This has happened time after time again.
It must be stopped if not for us, then for our children's sake.
