agreed,
the cartoony characters are a big problem, not the sun or lighting or w/e
One of the developer said quote "If he[the barbarian] moves the wrong way, he will impale himself. Which just goes to show the type of environment he lives in..."
That sort of childishness makes me worry about the type of game this might be.
I think the modeling should be more practical, and the colors/textures should be more exaggerated.
For instance, at the start of the demo, there is this blue fog in the background(inside). Replace it with a black fog, and to me it seems like the area would be much more intense. You could also reduce the color saturation on the greenish/blueish/purplish stone.
Next, when you first go outside, its not BRIGHT enough. And to me, its a bit too yellow.
Then, when it starts raining, it doesn't get dark enough.
I guess are art is subjective, but I feel like I'm right. You could make everything super dark, which would be cool i guess, or you could also try to do sharp contrast between areas, or you could leave it as is.
Right now it has an advantage of everything being very easy to see. I guess because none of it fits together. But that doesn't lead to the most enjoyable experience in my opinion.
When watching alot of these picture remakes... i really have to say this community has lost it totaly. People that dont have a clue about art is judging like veterans, this is my opnion tho but ithink you guys dont have a clue! In fact this reaction from this community scares me even more..... :/
People don't have to "have a clue about art" to express what they like and what they dislike. What we like is what matters most when it comes to creating something for a customer rather than for the sake of art itself.
Haha havent Diablo been cartoonish all along? I mean really do the monsters in D2 feel real? have you totaly lost it?
Back in '96 and 2000 it did feel real. And it sure as hell looks more real to me than Diablo 3.
Your comment about people making bad judgements because they're not experts in the area is really lacking substance. Are you an artist yourself? If not- then you aren't qualified to give comments like that. And you don't have to be a 'great' knower of color and composition to see that whatever the game announced at Paris was- it sure as hell wasn't Diablo 3.
And if you are familiar with art, then you are obviously not familiar with the atmosphere and tonality that Diablo carried with it before. Even though you've played previous games.
And I cannot make myself make the claim that 3d is harder to produce than 2d. Because they both have their better sides. So the technology not being able to do what the designers have envisioned isn't the case at this point of time. It looks as if they haven't overly exerted themselves creating a product that is immensely beloved as Diablo and a product that they should have known that it would be directly under the spotlight and criticised for any and all flawes.

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees

D1 and D2 WERE realistic.
Look at the detail in D2 Lut Gholein, the BRIGHTEST place in game.
The textures look realistic, same with character models.
The armor looks normal sized and colored in regular colors.
3d does not mean cartoony. Just imagine rotating the camera view in the picture above.

"[Diablo1+2] obviously had the gothic look to it, but, you they weren't, they weren't very uh, very colorful games."
"We want to take dark as an emotion, rather than an actual color art choice." -Rob Pardo
"Why the hell shouldn't it be for 'kiddies', it's a goddamn game afterall." -lethlan
I would say they have a better feeling now Diablo finaly looks rpgish rather then pure hack&slash in a tomb. I dont think it looks cartoonish sure its not like Age of Conan but it certantly aint like in WoW.
Dont think the mobs looks silly either, they will use alot of classic ones but i do hope they keep added new twisted demons to the ranks of the darklord.
At least you're not flaming and that's good.:)
But wouldn't you rather have more realistic graphics?
If D2 was made in 2008 it would look even better than Age of Conan (which looks very realistic btw).

look like WoW...:(:( the armour is too big..much colour...so cartoon...:(
The textures and feeling seems more like WoW, Dungeon Siege & Titan Quest than for instance NWN 2 (which is also too light, but has a bigger polygon & effects count). They all have their positives & chinks. Diablo should top all these motherfuckers. Both visually and in gameplay. From what I've seen it's lacking in the first department. I have to play the game in order to aquaint myself with the second.

taking color out is not the only way to make the atmosphere darker. I definitelyl dont want to lose detail, but i agree so far the environment does not fit the hell on earth scenario well, though unless we start seeing clocks melting, its going to be hard to depict this in a game

If this image were to be compared to today's Diablo 3 screens, I think they'd both have some pro's and con's. However, the main thing they'd have to transfer is the realism ingrained here, which will be the real challenge I think (not making it more colorful, as they stated), because polygons and hand drawing don't go together.

I totally agree, read my post on the previous page. I guess this just proves that people don't think realistic is necessarily better...I'm glad I'm not part of those people.

Transferring realism into 3D is not hard.
Just look at screens of Oblivion, Fallout 3, Age of Conan. (I won't mention FPS games)

Cartoonish and unrealistic are not synonyms.
A game can be unrealistic but it doesn't have to be cartoonish (ie, Crysis).
