I think people should stop whining about the art style! It doesnt look too cartoony to me. It's not like WoW. And if u want it to look darker turn your gamma down!
You said your point. It doesn't look too cartoony to YOU. You can do whatever you want and can say whatever the heck you want, just don't tell me I'm 'dumb' for viewing it differently from you (and believe me- I'm in the majority here).
If you have something smart or something original which is your 'OWN' thought to say, then do so. Don't waste my time and everyone else's reading your brainwashed nonsense.

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees
If I could change only one thing with the graphics, it would 100% be make the textures look like the photoshopped pics. Not the darkness and mass gritiness, just the textures, that alone makes a world of difference imo.
Just these examples show how much better the textures make the game look. Right now, everything is just way to damn smooth and new carpet. I mean ffs the top left pic looks as if they just unrolled brand new rugs.
You know the interior dungeon color doesn't bother me that much. I presume there was so much ambient green around because of the lighting's reflection off the water around the area. The game does seem to be a bit saturated, but I like the color palette just fine. It's the stylized portion IMO.
But I have a feeling....in increasing difficulties in D3...the environment will change accordingly...and look more and more evil/dark/hell like! Dont think there too much need to worry about the environment..blizzard know wot they're doing.
Interesting how people don't cry to Ebert and Roeper to go out and make their own movies.
You aren't Ebert or Roeper, you're the guy whining on AintItCool about the inconsistencies of the aesthetics between comicbook and silver-screen Iron Man.

Holy shit. It'll actually look more hellish in hell difficulty. Who would have ever thought of that? lol... that kicks ass.

Ranger - Ranged Weapon Mastery (fire a bow or javelins like a machine gun!), Traps (MK style!), Pets (lions, tigers, and bears oh my!) - physical damage based
Demonologist - Bone Spells (Necro style!), Avatar (shapeshift into a demon!), Furies (evil spirits that hang around you, giving party bonuses) - mix of physical damage and magic
LEAP ATTACK!!!!! PLAGUE OF TOADS!!!!!
SLOW TIME!!!!!
Anyone who knows anything about art (all art) knows how important contrast is.
If everything was black and grey, you'd just get bored.
Imagine if all of D2 was like the 'Tainted Sun' mission.
Yeah, everyone knows how important contrast is (and what contrast actually 'is' for that matter), but apparently not you. You know about art? Go back to school.

Yes, but how do we know that they WILL do something like that? Sounds like a great idea that should be contributed to the artist, not the Diablo 3 team if they implement it. 'IF' they implement it.
Now all we can do is hope it's exactly what they're going to do and that they haven't already revealed this information for some reason.

As you can see, the first image is very bright/lush and the textures/canvas seem as if they were hand-painted.
In the second picture, it isn't as "murky" as the OP's pictures, nor is it very dark. The textures are sharpened and the scenery still retains some of its color. The grass is a little "deader" and the trees stand out more and appear as if they are charred. I believe certain areas deserve to be dark with others still need to be somewhat colorful. Even Gears of War had my eyes hurting after a while. Open fields don't necessarily need to be shrouded in thick fog and dark mist.
WOW!!! This has got to be the best comparison i've seen yet! You nailed it perfectly!!! Not near as bright but not rediculously dark, still a great variety of colors, and the textures look 10 times better. I give this a thumbs up
Well, as some of you might have noticed, Blizzard changed the art style of the Diablo franchise, they made it cartoonish and less realistic, it dont feel as gothic, dark and evil as the two first games, instead it looks like a cartoon with vivid colors and hand drawn textures, just like World of Warcraft, what im proposing is a change of art style, something more dark, claustrophobic and cryptic, just what Diablo is all about.
Blizzard changed the art style of starcraft 2, it was too cartoonish too, with vivid colors, shields on marines and a lot of other visual elements that made the game look like Warcraft, the community didnt agree with that look and Blizzard accepted their opinion, Diablo 3 is going in the same way so I made 2 pictures to show what Diablo 3 should be about (in my opinion):
And found this one too:
What we can do is just changing the colors but there's a lot more things (cartoon models, hand drawn textures, humour in the chat with Cane (this isnt Warcraft damn it!), character models that look taken straight away from World of Warcraft and much more), that just dont belong to Diablo, take a look at this statue, for example:
At first sight it would be a statue from World of Warcraft, right? But not, its in Diablo, it's cute, funny, fluffy, happy and cheerful, we dont want those things in Diablo!
Tell me what you think, i think it fits much better the Diablo world, ill make more pictures if i see that more people agree with me, maybe we can send them to Blizzard and make they know this.
I 100%ly agree this looks far more like the old diablo 2 same dark areas and graphics....
this is how i see it..
math: wow
chemistry: diablo
There is this kid named "Blizzard" and he always get good grades, previously he got a 98( his highest grade on Math class yet)
It's time for blizzard to take the Chemistry test.. but he has only studied math for so long and left chemistry for the past.. so this kid does all he can with his math skills on Chemistry.. and guess what he FAILS.. but he's good on the math problems for chemistry tho.. but FAILS.

We're trying to balance satisfying the fans and also creating a game that feels like our own.
Why do you merge an official to an unofficial shouldnt it be backwards?.. i bet with the title of this thread.. it will get burried in hell and doubt blizzard will see this again. if they ever did of course..

Making the colors more dark doesnt make the game more dark. In fact thats just a stupid idea to begin with. The bigger problem is the actual models and terrain that make it seem cartoony. While they do need darker skies and more ominous countrysides, I'd rather have a character that looks like a real person having his stomache gored out when he dies.
Besides the graphics, its also that the game looks too much like an MMO. It looks like a cross between Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft, partly because of graphics, and partly because of the way you control your hero, and the multiplayer is so cut and dry. Its like the ONLY option is to have people join you in your quest to kill 100,000,000,000 monsters until you kill the biggest boss of all. Im sure their will be PvP, but Ill be suprised if its anything special. Pretty much it looks like Diablo 3 has little or no RPG potential it. Why not be able to choose your own path, instead of going on quest after quest with the intent of just killing all the baddies. No, graphics arent the biggest problem right now with Diablo 3, its the gameplay that everyone seems to think is okay.
the majority of people complaining are complaining about the cartoony art style, not something fixable
by such a CRUDE means as changing brightness, THIS IN MANY CASES has nothing to do with lightning, it
is armour texture, enviromental textures and the various modeling styles which MAY be very skillfully
done, DO NOT remain at all consistant to the art styles of diablo 1 and 2.
agreed,
the cartoony characters are a big problem, not the sun or lighting or w/e

think of it this way. is the look THAT bad that you would rather wait 5 more months to play? the game will be released you tommorow, would you tell blizzard no, take 5 more months and make it look this way. i certainly wont. i am interested to see how the game will look as it progresses through the acts. more pronounced blood and spell casting. and probably a big reason why it looks to cartoony to you is because their trying to keep the system req as low as they can. the lower they can keep the system req. the more people will buy their game. thats what they have learned from wow, everyone can play. making a game that is extremely scaleable takes more time and personally i would rather them spend time on balancing the game and creating story rather then making it over the top scaleable. also, ur usually zoomed out so far, after enough hack and slashing you wont be looking at ever detail, just the blood thats flying everywhere.
