What was that "thing" Diablo 2 had, which made you addicted to it??
For me, it was the fact that it didn't fall in the old fashioned "Goblins", "Ogres", Lord-of-the-ring-+-Dungeons-and-Dragons stuff. Instead, you encounter much more original enemies like shamans and the like. Or for instance, Blood Raven. Besides, its music, so original and cool created a mist of unknown things to come. The game was unpredictable, not like most RPGs, where you know what's coming next. I hope Diablo III is like it in that way.
an epic story of biblical proportions, biblical references, medieval literature references. free to play online, cool classes, cool enemies, huge world, lots of items. the fact that unlike most RPGs Diablo is humans only seriously i cant think of another one that has this they all see to have elves, dwarves, Orcs, several other tolkeinesque races.
could have done with a few more quest though.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
rpgs nowadays have thousands of quests, sometimes its annoying. diablo had too little for my taste, but i enjoyed it nonetheless. they originality of the skills, the little stuff that makes you angry but keeps you trying it again and again, the fact that you can kill the lord of hatred and his brothers again and again, the gruesomeness it has that other games didnt offer at the time. i mean, there are thousands of reasons why this game is addicting.
music, atmosphere, and how easy it is to play with friends

Angus the peasant saw the necromancer raising the rotting remains and ran away. Since then he told the tale of how he narrowly escaped the necromancer he called "juicy bones".
the finding items addiction.
original story and monsters, characters.
the skills wich give replayability beyond any other game.
the randomized maps.
and the music and atmosphere.
oh and the cool way monsters die
sums about all i had in mind. Especially the skills and item finding, i lived for this shit
I don't know, I can never really pinpoint this. Gameplay I guess
But I believe it is because Blizzard always makes it right. It's not too dull, but not too repetitive. Not too simple, but not too complicated (although that depends on your playstyle). Just a great blend.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
Yeah, I don't want to repeat anything here, as I agree with most of everyone's reasons; but one of the main things is: sometimes I don't want to "go to [unpronouncable city name] and find [obscure alchemic ingredient/key/other inane thing]" where you often have to do it stealthily. Sometimes I want to kill everything in sight with a barrage of spells or a volley of arrows or a whirlwind of sword slices, without regard. While the former is fun sometimes (as in Oblivion), I don't want to feel obligated to play longer than I have to, if you catch my drift. With Diablo, you could play for a half an hour or so befor school or work and still accomplish something, while in Oblivion (which is amazing, by the way) you feel obligated to play for a very exended period of time due to its very involved character development system.
Diablo is amazing.
