Richard A. Knaak will discuss details of his latest Blizzard Entertainment and Pocket Star Books project titled
Diablo: The Sin War , Book One: Birthright with the Diablo fans Community.
The Public Q&A on IRC will take place:
Monday, October 23
2pm PST / 5pm EST / 11pm GMT+1
Server: irc.wowirc.com
Channel: #wowradio
I read the book already. It seems there may be details that may portent the Diablo 3 storyline. The origin of Sanctuary and men is revealed, and Mephisto is revealed to have a son and a daughter.
Description:
Since the beginning of time, the angelic forces of the High Heavens and the demonic hordes of the Burning Hells have been locked in an eternal conflict for the fate of all Creation. That struggle has now spilled over into Sanctuary - the world of men. Determined to win mankind over to their respective causes, the forces of good and evil wage a secret war for mortal souls. This is the tale of the Sin War - conflict that would forever change the destiny of man.
Three thousand years before the Darkening of Tristam, Uldyssian, son of Diomedes, was a simple farmer from the village of Seram. Content with his quiet, idyllic life, Uldyssian is shocked as dark events rapidly unfold around him. Mistakenly blamed for the grisly murders of two traveling missionaries, Uldyssian is forced to flee his homeland and set out on a perilous quest to redeem his good name. To his horror, he has begun to manifest strange new powers -- powers no mortal man has ever dreamed of. Now Uldyssian must grapple with the energies building within him -- lest they consume the last vestiges of his humanity.
Note: I read a review copy of this book supplied by Simon & Schuster / Pocket Star Books. If I weren't ignorant of what Diablo 3's plot is, I would say this book may show hints of what the topic of Diablo 3 will be. There are maybe one or two entities in this book that could theoretically carry on the plans of Mephisto, Diablo and Baal now that the Worldstone is no more. A shocking revelation!
If your referring to Astrogha and Gulag then don't get your hopes high.
Astrogha ends up locked in a pocket realm as written in Moon of the Spider and Gulag, well, hes just dumb.
Besides, there are still two more books to look for, Scales of the Serpent, which will probably reveal more information about Trang-Oul, and The Veiled Prophet, perhaps more about Inarius,
But this is great, what we need is to arrange a few questions from the community to cover those who cant make it.
Also, it would be wise if some one, of a few people, will save a transcript of the event and post it here, I would volunteer but the time zone and the date only allows me to be there for a short amount of time.
So on my behalf, I can contribute a question that has been bugging me for a few days now, that is if I wont have the chance to ask it myself.
If the realm of Sanctuary was a secret kept between the Burning Hells and the faction of Inarius, how is it then that the secret of the World Stone, and the Soul Stones that came from it was known firstly and only by the High Heavens?

- Everything you ever wanted to know about the lore of Diablo and never knew where to look (In construction).
Good questions. Im wondering when the Worldstone came to exist. Before or after the Sin War? The book seems to sorta imply that the High Heavens didnt know of the existence of Sanctuary at this point in history 3000 years before the Darknening of Tristam.
And as for your first question, no. I didn't mean those demons.
I meant Lucion and Lilith. I don't want to say much about this though. Going into details will spoil too much.
You know what happened at the end of the book Birthright with Lilith. If she was able to return from the void where Inarius himself casted her into, won't she be back again in Diablo 3 for X or Y reason to claim what she thinks is hers?
Lilith does come back, she makes her appearance in patch 1.11, and as short and twisted as it might look, it does have a piece of lore that explains it:
“Lilith is believed to be Queen of the Succubi and matriarch of demons. After her legions of Succubi and strongest daughter Andariel were killed by mortals who successfully defended the Worldstone, Lilith swore to personally intervene. She masterminded the revival of Diablo by manifesting herself in the mortal realm and performing a ritual of Dark Summoning. This ritual, long thought to be impossible by the most powerful mortal wizards, allowed Lilith to link with Diablo across realms, strengthening him until he was finally able to once again reincarnate himself in the mortal plane. Rage and a deep yearning for revenge boiled within the eyes of the Lord of Terror, and together he and Lilith resurrected the two remaining Prime Evils as well as Duriel and Izual, two of their strongest agents.
Diablo announced his grand plan - the Three were finally strong enough to spread Pandemonium throughout Sanctuary. Lilith could have easily conducted an assault on her own, but because she had been left severely weakened by the Dark Summoning ritual, she agreed to aid the Prime Evils and command some of their remaining forces. “
As of Lucion, I think we've seen the last of him, just like he mentioned, Inarius chose to banish Lilith instead of slaying permanently and what we have with Lucion look to be as permanent as it can get.

From what we know so far the realm of Sanctuary was created by Inarius, Lilith, and a bunch of other angels and demons who got tiered of the endless conflict between Heaven and Hell.

<strixus> The Lorekeeprs preshow is begining an hour early, to give you folks something special to listen to during the Q&A
<Deathshade|EU> Ok guys, the interview is about to start. Medievaldragon of BlizzPlanet will be asking a few questions first. You guys will get a chance after that.
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: Hi, Richard. Not long ago, you wrote Diablo: The Moon of the Spider with Zayl the Necromancer. Those who already read or will read Diablo: Moon of the Spider may wish to know if Diablo: The Sin War ties directly with the events of your previous book.
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: Sin war takes plae long before, but its events lead to all that is Diablo.
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: Which character from Moon of the Spider will make an appearancec in Diablo: The Sin War, Book One: Birthright?
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: As there are demons involved, we will see our friend Astrogha, although long before his own ambitions. He is not the threat, but a part of it
<strixus|onair> The Lorekeeprs preshow is begining an hour early, to give you folks something special to listen to during the Q&A
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: Who are the main characters of Diablo: The Sin War, and what could you tell us about each of them?
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: Uldyssian is the central character, a farmer who lost most of his family. he is the pawn chosen to begin a terrible shift in Sanctuary. Mendeln is his brother, with his own path to come,. which fans will recognize.
<Knaak> There is also Achilios the hunter and Serenthia, both of whom will prove significant
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: Why did Blizzard, and by saying so, Chris Metzen and/or you decide to release a trilogy based on the Sin War -- an event of the far past -- at this point? And why not start at the Great Conflict which is a previous event in the Diablo history?
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: This is the pivotal event for humans. It is how they become drawn into the conflict between the two sides. It is a human story, with human actions causing events. It is the basis for all that goes on after.
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: Will Diablo: The Sin War, book One: Birthright show hints of the origin of Sanctuary and men? If so, will we find out more through book two and three?
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: We will see hints of its origins as the story unfolds throughout all three books.
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: According to the book, the existence of Sanctuary was kept hidden from the High Heavens. However, the Worldstone is a physical link between Heaven and Sanctuary. This will trail off some fans point-blank. So, I am forced to ask ... Will the creation of the Worldstone appear in any of the three books of the Trilogy? Or is the Worldstone built far after The Sin War event?
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: the creation will not be shown, as that, according to Blizzard's material, took place at the beginning of Sanctuary, but we will see it. We would have to. We will find out more about it, especially in the second volume
<strixus|onair> The Lorekeeprs preshow is begining an hour early, to give you folks something special to listen to during the Q&A - http://wcradio.com:8000/listen.pls Tune in or the tentacles will make you
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: It caught my attention that Birthright seems to reveal the origin of the first classes. Of the first, I am still not sure if to call Uldyssian a Barbarian, of his brother it is more obvious as the plot progresses. Are there more Diablo Classes emerging through the Trilogy?
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: I would not call Uldyssian a Barbarian, no. He is something far removed from it. Yes, of Mendeln, people will see a more recognizable character. The Diablo classes develop more after this trilogy, but you will see some hints, I believe.
<Knaak> Question from Anthares: Good evening Mr. Knaak. I want to personally thank you for writing such great novels about the universe of Warcraft, especially Day of the Dragon. Your unique style is what I particularly like, to the point that I actually devour your novels. Again, I'm sending you one big THANK YOU!
<Knaak> Answer for Anthares: Thank you. I appreciate it. The Blizzard worlds are wonderful to be involved with.
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: What is the mysterious rock that Mendeln and Achilios find? If you can't say at this point, will it be revealed in more depth at book two?
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: The rock has to do with Mendeln's path and those secrets will be revealed more in the sequel, yes
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: Hope I am not spoiling much at this point, however I really have to ask. Blizzard introduced a new Pandemonium Event monster named Lilith (Act V) in Diablo II Patch 1.11. You can read about her at: http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/monsters/act5-lilith.shtml
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: She is, I believe, although she will look a little different by the game's point. Her part in the trilogy is major.
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: Is she the same Lilith mentioned in Birthright? What could you tell us about her through the development of the trilogy? It is interesting to see this character become the catalyst of the Sin War.
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: definitely an interesting character
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: How much of the book is creation of yours, and how involved is Chris Metzen behind the canon storyline of Diablo: The Sin War Trilogy? Do you think the ramifications of this book impact in the storyline of Diablo 3 the game?
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: This is a pure collaboration between myself and Chris/Blizzard. All that is written is passed by him and the others there. This will be canon and has adjusted earlier info. The ramifications here will be used for any future project...and I ain't writing for a dead game.
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: This is my last question to give fans an opportunity to ask you questions. However, something I know many will be pleased with. Will we see Rathma, Angel Tyrael or Angel Izual show up later through the Trilogy?
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: Yes and more.

<Deathshade|EU> .
<Deathshade|EU> Your turn guys! If you would like to ask Richard A. Knaak any questions about the new Diablo books please send a PM to Knaak. Please keep the questions short and concise. Thank you!
<Knaak> Question from AdiTT: I see one of the questions almost covers what I would like to ask - the storyline of the Sin War Trilogy. It is a well-known story on gaming world. Do you felt the need to add/change things to make the Diablo universe more complete?
<Knaak> Answer for AdiTT: We altered what needed to be altered for the sake of the game's growth. We didnt want to change anything for the sake of just changing it. We felt this story will better serve the fans.
<Knaak> Question from Rumda: Silghtly off topic, but which of the blizzard worlds do you prefer writing for?
<Knaak> Answer for Rumda: I like both for different reasons. I like the epic LOTR feel of Warcraft and the shadowy, inner quest and dark aspecta of Diablo
<Deathshade|EU> Your turn guys! If you would like to ask Richard A. Knaak any questions about the new Diablo books please send a PM to Knaak. Please keep the questions short and concise. Thank you!
<Knaak> Question from Deathshade|EU: When you write a book that already has a start and a finish like The Sin War books. Do you feel that because the story has already been told just not in great detail you are restricted in your freedom to write the books? That you have to follow a certain path?
<Knaak> Answer for Deathshade|EU: Not really. There is so much in between and even the beginning and end have countless details to be revealed. Its been fun
<Medievaldragon> More questions are welcome we have 20 minutes more
<Knaak> Question from AdiTT: Were you inspired for new universe while working on the trilogy?
<Knaak> Answer for AdiTT: the trilogy has inspired ideas. what those become, time will tell. That's part of the fun
<Knaak> Question from Stiverton: When you wrote the Day of the Dragon, how much of the events in it were created by you, as opposed to being already established history?
<Knaak> Answer for Stiverton: Pretty much all of the events inside were based on my ideas. Not the war, obviously, but the Demon Soul, Deathwing's disguise, the characters involved, etc. but all were discussed with Bliz. Chris and i developed the other dragons together, a good time
<strixus|onair> The Lorekeeprs preshow is begining an hour early, to give you folks something special to listen to during the Q&A - http://wcradio.com:8000/listen.pls Tune in or the tentacles will make you
<Medievaldragon> -------- While questions are answered, please private message me identifying what fansite or gaming network you are representing.
<Knaak> Question from Awiin: Another off topic question: what are your thoughts, as a wrighter in the universes, about the voiced dismay, from some fans, over what they see as misstreatment of the lore (warcraft)?
<Knaak> Answer for Awiin: I understand their concern, but, having worked with other gaming worlds, often the first storylines are shorter and less usable as time goes on. We have had to adjust for the growing worlds. We will not satisfy everyone, but we are trying.
<Knaak> Question from Deathshade|EU: So... Diablo 3?
<Knaak> Answer for Deathshade|EU: I am not writing for a dead world...but a world with dead. nuff said
<Medievaldragon> lol
<Knaak> Question from Kae: Do you have any plans, or at least hope, to work with the continuing Warcraft story of the Dragon Aspects, Korialstrasz, and Rhonin in the future?
<Knaak> Answer for Kae: Yes. Coming after the Sin War is a follow up to Day.
<Knaak> Question from Stiverton: Have any advice for any aspiring authors that would like to write for an established world like Dragonlance, Diablo, or Warcraft, as you have?
<Knaak> Answer for Stiverton: Keep writing, keep honing your skills. To be able to work in Warcraft or such, you need to prove you can write your own worlds first. All writers chosen are established. I encourage you to write and submit your own projects. Its how I made it to this point.
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: Is the title of the next Warcraft book available, or will it be announced at a later time?
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: It has not been decided yet
<Deathshade|EU> .
<Deathshade|EU> Your turn guys! If you would like to ask Richard A. Knaak any questions about the new Diablo books please send a PM to Knaak. Please keep the questions short and concise. Thank you!
<Knaak> Question from Tranqer: I love you
<Knaak> Answer for Tranqer: um...ok
<strixus|onair> The Lorekeeprs preshow is begining an hour early, to give you folks something special to listen to during the Q&A - http://wcradio.com:8000/listen.pls Tune in or the tentacles will make you
<Knaak> Question from Stiverton: Do you play Diablo, World of Warcraft, or any other blizzard titles avidly?
<Knaak> Answer for Stiverton: I've played several versions of both worlds I write in, but to play avidly would take away from my writing time. Therefore, my characters generally die a glorious death soon after they set foot on their quests. It is a little annoying....
<Knaak> Question from AdiTT: Would you like to "see" your books on the big screen? Would you write a script?
<Knaak> Answer for AdiTT: I would like that. Definitely would enjoy working on a script. Wouldn't we all?
<Knaak> Question from G-WiZ-: wow i just came in from lunch and i was reading the 3rd Diablo series book (about the City of Ureh).. great stuff.. just want to say thanks for writing these. my imagination blooms from this literature. Go Zayl!
<Knaak> Answer for G-WiZ-: Zayl has been fun and has a big following. Blzzard has some ideas for him already...
<Medievaldragon> -------- Countdown 10 minutes for Q&A to finish. Ask now or sorrow until next Q&A
<Knaak> Question from Stiverton: Who would you say is your favorite author, and who would you say has been your biggest inspiration, if it is someone different?
<Knaak> Answer for Stiverton: Inspiration. Edgar Allan Poe, Zelazny, ER burroughs
<strixus|onair> The Lorekeeprs preshow is begining an hour early, to give you folks something special to listen to during the Q&A - http://wcradio.com:8000/listen.pls Tune in or the tentacles will make you - and we are doing the game during regular preshow, starting in 15 min!!!
<Knaak> Question from SOLOMIR: Will more information be revealed about the wars between the mage clans in the next books?
<Knaak> Answer for SOLOMIR: We will hear of the first mage clans, but they are not at the stage where their wars will be center.
<Knaak> Question from Medicia: Speaking of movie script; are you working on the script for the comming World of Warcraft movie?
<Knaak> Answer for Medicia: Not at this time
<Knaak> Question from Cooked_Auto: Are there any more plans for future Warcraft mangas in line with The Sunwell Trilogy? Either translated from Korea or made by writers from other countries?
<Knaak> Answer for Cooked_Auto: A second manga is being discussed, with the Burning Crusade involved. I will be writing and hopefully the same artist will lend his excellent work
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: What can you tell us of Warcraft: The Sunwell Trilogy book 2 and 3?
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: Book 2 is a great romp with a Tauren, a Foresaken, and a frostwyrm that leads into book 3, which is called Ghostlands and is in the Plaguelands, of course. There will be an appearance by a wellknown character or two in the third.
<Medievaldragon> Countdown minus 5 minutes for closure
<Knaak> Question from Gimble: Was there any part or chapter you paticuarly enjoyed/disliked writing from the books? or was it fairly samey for the whole?
<Knaak> Answer for Gimble: I enjoy the magic and battles the most, of course, but I enjoy the whole experience
<Knaak> Question from Deathshade|EU: I'm sure people will appreciate me for asking this question: Pie or Cake?
<Knaak> Answer for Deathshade|EU: both
<Knaak> Question from G-WiZ-: have you been granted some autonomous power in crafting the novels or does blizzard need to pore over every detail to make sure they stay in line with lore or level of mature content?
<Knaak> Answer for G-WiZ-: While they respect my work, I insisted from the beginning that I work hand in hand. I want these to be the books that Blizzard and its readera want, although we can never satisfy everyone, of course.
<Knaak> Question from AdiTT: Thank you for your wonderful work
<Knaak> Answer for AdiTT: Thank you for reading!
<Knaak> Question from Larz: will there be an Diablo 3?
<Knaak> Answer for Larz: Hmmm...
<Knaak> Question from AcidReign: How do you come up with character names in your books? Most of them are quite unique, and thinking them up must be tough.
<Knaak> Answer for AcidReign: It involves discussion and a study of ancient names or other names already used in the games. Always a tough part of the story creation, believe me
<Knaak> Question from Ace: Do you have a favourite book in the blizzard universe that you really enjoyed working on?
<Knaak> Answer for Ace: No real favorite. Each story Blizzard gives me allows me a new chance to explore and I love that.
<Knaak> Question from Rumda: what in your eyes is better or worse about writing for a already establised world than creating you own?
<Knaak> Answer for Rumda: Better is that there are things in place that I can draw new ideas from. Obviously, creating your own world is always best because you are ultimate master there...
<Knaak> Question from Rathi: Is the book reccomended to people that know only what is taught in Diablo ? Or should they start reading another book first?
<Knaak> Answer for Rathi: The Sin War is a good place to start for those looking to the future of the world, however, for those wanting to enjoy the feel, starting with any of the earlier books is good (I recommend legacy of blood and Kingdom of Shadow, naturally)
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: Blizzard showed a teaser of Anveena and Dar'Khan in the Blood Elves section - chapter 4-6 of World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade. Why should fans read Warcraft Manga: The Sunwell Trilogy book 1 through 3?
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: Because, as with all things written, these will tie into the games. The manga has some parts that are already planned and some have been implemented. The fate of the Sunwell is most important and other characters will be appearing in the expansions.
<Medievaldragon> Chapter 4-6 of Blood Elves may be read here: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/burningcrusade/townhall/history-be.html
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: What other projects are you working on or are available at stores? I know you have a Conan series fresh from the oven.
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: I am working on background story for a different gaming project, starting up the Ogre Titans for Dragonlance, finishing THE VEILED PROPHET for Sin war, and have just had my AGE OF CONAN trilogy released. That's some of it
<Knaak> Question from Rumda: who is your favorate character in you books?
<Knaak> Answer for Rumda: In warcraft, Krasus. In Diablo, Zayl...and Humbart.
<Knaak> Question from SOLOMIR: How soon can we expect to see more Diablo based novels after the Sin War trilogy will released in full?
<Knaak> Answer for SOLOMIR: I hope to see more soon after the third is out. I know S&S, the publisher, is working on that and Blizzard wants it, natch
<Medievaldragon> No more questions will be answered. We are about to close the Q&A. Knaak will answer those questions still on the buffer
<Knaak> Question from Rathi: Any ifnormation on Diablo3? Have you been asked to write a further story? can we expect anything?
<Knaak> Answer for Rathi: What happens in the Sin War is significant, as I mentioned, toward the future. I know that Blizzard is very eager to make Diablo fans happy.
<Medievaldragon> Warcraft Archive book contains a TPB of Warcraft: Day of the Dragon, Lord of the Clans, The Last Guardian and Of Blood and Honor -- so you know. By Jeff Grubb, Richard A. Knaak, Christie Golden and Chris Metzen.
<Knaak> If it didn't come through, look for the new collection from Warcraft, featuring the first three plus chris metzen's story
<Knaak> Question from Stiverton: Belfadin or Shamanei?
<Knaak> Answer for Stiverton: I'll never tell...
<Knaak> Question from Medievaldragon: Many thanks for spending some time with the Diablo and Warcraft fans Community, Richard. We hope to meet you soon
<Knaak> Answer for Medievaldragon: It's been a great pleasure. I appreciate the interest of the fans!
<strixus|onair> The Lorekeeprs preshow is going on right now to give you entertainment, and stay tuned for after the inteview for a few guess the persons in wow lore music game
<Knaak> Question from Rathi: I know this isnt really "your section" but can we hope to see more, and cheaper artwork, like posters based on diablo?
<Knaak> Answer for Rathi: I'd like that, too. I'll ask.

<Knaak> Question from Rathi: I know this isnt really "your section" but can we hope to see more, and cheaper artwork, like posters based on diablo?
<Knaak> Answer for Rathi: I'd like that, too. I'll ask.
