gold needs to be the currency of sanctuary, well as much as it can. obviously during the end game items will take over.
but if gold is to be used more frequently then there needs to be more to do with it, repairing/purchasing/gambling for items is great but its not enough.
also it should be rarer as Having currency such as sojs and high runes is rediculous. They need to make gold worth a lot, but no monster should drop more than 250. i reckon uniques should hold a bit more upwards of say 500gp. but nothing insane like 16000 gp.
wheres the loose woman, alcohol, gambling, betting on fights, buying your way to something or somewhere, paying to get your items imbued/socketed/personalized, upgrades to and for weapons and armor, corrupt officals who take bribes, trading gold for EXP? (yes i have put all of those things in the master list)
i hate the fact the only thing i ever seem to do with my gold is lose it when i die, because i have so much my stash cant take it all, ressurecting hireables, repairing items, there has to be a better use for my thousands of excess gold.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
trading gold for xp wouldnt be that good imo. Especially in multiplayer people would easily farm/sell gold per ebay for real money after that (easy levels). Still, all the suggestions i see here would fit a MMO more than a single player/coop game.
diablo does have a pretty strong SP, i was thinking with the buying EXP is a little cheap, but im talking about at high levels, its how many baal runs to go from lvl 98 to 99? and you dont get the 35% extra exp you get for being on Battle.net do you, need to have something for SP. Yes i play SP, hence why most of my ideas tend towards that direction.

theye're the "players 8" command in SP to add the exp u get online (also the difficulty).
But having gold as a trading currency without having people to trade it with (SP) would be problematic.
no for 2 reasons:
1: it would make the game to much like other games like ever quest and
2: if we keep the game play like it is then there would people that where able to tp kill and steal the gold and if we change the gameplay to protect against this then (personally) i feel that this wouyld change the game to much
I agree with you loki 99, however, there is not that much use for gold as you progress into the game. We are simply inputting other things we can use gold for and should gold be more valuable. I understand that there are people who creates a new character, joins with a cow run, and snatches all the gold. That could be a seperate topic for what rules and regulation that are needed in the Diablo series. Great input though.

i think it must be important bcs i dont wanna give items to take items. also hope the multiplayer will be like mmorpg instead of 8player games. maybe we can set merchants to sell items then ha?

Everquest is a MMO, nothing like any Diablo thats been released till now.

Who said that Diablo 3 will be exactly as 2? I dont think we'll drop gold on death tbh, and i dont believe its gonna be as we were used from Diablo 2 (the change from Diablo to Diablo 2 was really big too).

having a completely different multiplayer part than a singleplayer it would be like creating 2 games = nothing Blizzard would do cause it would cost too much.
About the suggestion to buy something usefull from merchants, i'd like that too, gold was too damn useless in Diablo 2 (especially in LoD when gambling got really nerfed).
nothing from world of warcraft should be incorporated in d2
allow me to disagree. I find many things from WoW fitting for a Diablo game (not the graphics). After playing WoW the Diablo 2 UI made me wanna kill myself. Just awefull. The lack of quests or any point for playing the game (except just grinding for xp - or mfing) while there could be some random generated quests to add some more story info and atmosphere.
d2 is unique in a good way while wow is just a damn cartoon.
cartoonish graphics, yeah, as we were used by the Warcraft games. The game itself is the best i've played in a few years - and its the only that made me stop playing Diablo 2, thats really hard!
in fact if they just re released diablo2 with new acts/quests and imporoved graphics, that would be enough for d3
that would be too low quality, no matter how much i used to like Diablo 2, i dont want a remake. Recycling old ideas and nothing really new just sucks and i dont want it. Take a few good things from WoW, Oblivion, Gothic 3 etc, put ur own ideas too and use the good old Diablo gameplay. I cant expect anything less than exceptional for Diablo 3.
Yes, change is definately needed, but it is a fine line to walk, and many games fail in their sequels.
However, gold is an area that can easily be improved on without ruining the gameplay (if what you want is keeping it the same way).

what i mean is that some innovations should be included in the sequel.
Ofc i liked the fast paced hack & slash Diablo offered, but leveling in tha after 87+ region (without grinding full Baal runs) was too slow and too boring.
Questing and gold among other things should become more important. Some sort of respeccing should also be included (class and skill tree systems should remain intact - with different/new classes and skills ofc).

They should make gold a bigger piece of diablo. but in order to do that they'd have to make alot of changes. I've heard people using houses to sell items from instead of having to actually sit their in a room and trade off. true houses doesnt work with the diablo story line. however if they want'd to go that way they could make it a tent of sorts. I think a better way if they want'd a way to trade things like that instead of ripping a page from Daoc ( Dark age of camelot did the house thing before WoW ). Is have an area like they do in Everquest or better yet more then one area so you dont lag intensely while your trying to sell. and just have an actual mule toon. price items using gold or w/e currency its going to be. and then you can go afk while you sell. i love'd that feature in Eq as well as the houses in wow/daoc. reason why is you can go do something else while you sell especially with the house can do something else in game. with the Eq idea can go afk do homework or something. With all the gems and runes that drop you'd think they would have a way to craft your own armor using various gems and runes to put stats on them. that would make use of the gold buying materials i just hope if they do allow you to skill up in things like armorcraft, tailoring etc that they find a new way to give skill exp. the way Eq did was horrible daoc a little better not sure how wow does it. it would bring more individuality to the game and something more to do besides leveling. if they plan on making gold harder to drop then they should take the repair armor feature out or at least lower the prices.be to hard to save money if your hunting to get gold then have to go repair your stuff. usually when i repair on d2 it costs me a little over a mil a shot.

Oh no, not that stamina. Imagine, I'm running around smashing monsters, and just as I'm about to beat the boss, I take a trip to the tavern and order a pie. No, it's not about eating food this game.

i agree let fable deal with that, gold in diablo is for item related purposes (currently), and merc hiring. I still think the ideas i aluded to arlier could work, and yes i do realise they are heavily influenced by DND.

Gold should definately be worth more...i mean, i never actually saw a high rune til about 6 months after starting battle net...and even then it was only muling for my friend. Gold is a general currency in most rpg's, it should be utilised that way in d3.
