No it wasn't indeed; my point is that the currency of a game shouldn't be based on an item [aka hrs] that is legally near impossible to get on a normal basis
I hate runes as currency in D2, but it is unique form of currency. Which makes Diablo different. Gold is like the currency in all the new games, and it makes things easier. I could go either way but I guess I'm for gold. I don't mind Blizz not making gold important but I don't see it happening. However, I hope they keep gambling because I really enjoy it.
Taken from D2 manual: Gold has long served as the monetary means of trade in the world of Sanctuary. This precious metal is melted into small gold slugs that are flattened and stamped with the heraldry of the kingdom that created it. Regardless of shape and size, the amount of gold per coin is consisten throughout the realms.

If you can actually buy a decent item from a vendor, say a unique belt, not just a piddly little +2 STR belt, then you would actually want to accumulate that amount of coin.
-Gambling for Set items
-Gambling for Unique items
-Buying decent items from Vendors (low level uniques and sets)
-Purchasing Beer/Ale/Wine/Spirits
-Purchasing food stuffs
-Purchasing Courtesans (if your that way inclined)
-Buying information about quests from non co-operative NPCs
-Buying your way out of trouble (bribes)
-Paying guards off, or paying someone to turn a blind eye (Bribes)
-Buying passages on ferries/caravans/airships/boats/ships
-Paying city tolls (some towns and cities have entrance fees or a docking fee)
-Paying bridge tolls
-Placing bets on illegal pit fights
-Placing bets in pub games (Black Jack anyone? Or shove a' Penny high, or Han/Cho, or that game they play on the Flying Dutchman in Pirates II)
-Donating coin to a church or temple
-Shilling out coin to the homeless
-Purchasing licenses (If you have played Baldur's Gate II, you would know you need to buy a license for 5000gp to cast heavy magic in Athkatla)
-Buying a room in a tavern for the night to relaxing
-Buying random semi pointless items ala Fable, roses, wedding rings, chocolates, etc
Long story short, more stuff you actually want to do with gold, and it becomes more useful, currently, other than a few potions and repairing your stuff, it quickly looses it's importance after about half way through act 1.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
What we need in D3 is some good old fashion Reganomics! hehe jk, but i do think a real in game economy would be good if you had gold that was worth more than its weight in Toilet Paper. The only problem i could see with an economy in game is that it could get in the way of actualy playing.
Helll Yea There Should Be Gold In Diablo3 Wtf Ki Nd Of Shit Is This!!!

That is possible, that Baldur's Gate II for example, it is impossible to go from Chapter 2 (act2) to Chapter 3 (act3) without paying a man 20000gp. You are stuck in chapter 2 until you raise the coin, but you only need to do a few really long winded quests and you have your money.
But the very idea of only being able to advance in the game until you have acquired the correct amount of money, hmm wonder what that would do to diablo? "Rush me! But oh yeah you need to give me 5000gp so I can pay for Warriv's caravan, and 20000gp so I can pay for the boat ride to act III" That would make sense, I highly doubt Meshif takes peoplee out for free, he has to pay for repairs to his boat that it sustains in storms you know, and Warriv, he might need to hand over money to bandits or lose his life, unless you want to fight it out (but that is another story, err thread).
I think using gold as well, what it is, currency, would be a good idea, I never like Nilhathak as a NPC he seems shifty. A think a few sachels of coin would have brought some colour to his skin. Harrogath is suppose to be in a siege after all, money could buy supplies and other stuff they need.

I kinda liked the fact that people traded instead of bought stuff in Diablo 2, it brought that Medieval feel to it. Mostly because in those days they did usually trade with each other for goods instead of using a currency system.
id hate to say it,but gold having a little significance can balance out the high runes value, hypothetically if there are any special crafting items in that sense
Does anyone have any info on currency to be used in game?
What I mean is, will gold be completely worthless like in D2? I'd like to see maybe a monetary system for moving items around rather than finding two people who just happen to have what the other is looking for.
I did not like how SoJs became currency in D2 to trade items. Maybe something could drop aside from gold, gold being used more for merchants in game or maybe even making gold more viable.

Gold has to be more important than it was.
24% for In BETWEEN and 64% for Yes.
Then it will turn into runescape..
