i did like having mercs, whether they glitched or not if you got the right one, and the right gear for em, they were basically your other half, i had a really good act 2 merc, was nasty and hard to kill, sadly i lost him and my main char when blizz started that timeout effect that if you didn't play em long enough they faded away, still pisses me off to this day, then again thats what i got for having too many damn mule toons.... oi lol
Why not? A Merc is a nice idea. Why should they be banned?
Well since people defend orginal series of diablo so fierce here should I too? Mercs wasn't anything that everyone had in orginal D2 not permanent at least and there was no mercs at all in D1 so there shouldn't be any permanent mercs in D3 either.
A really cool idea would be if you could skill and level them in a way, too... You know, Rogue merc with multishot, Barb merc with maxed warcries... If that is not a cool idea.... It would increase the variations of a character setup amazingly!
Jej warcries.. mm why should my baba spend any skills in them.. duh. Or why should we invite that baba to party we already have one..
And the people, who do not like them: just do not use them. Okay, I never really used them, because they were too weak, but I always liked the idea.
Weak? Someone said his merc can solo hell ancients.. don't know if thats weak really.
And it is a nice help for PVP-skilled chars playing PVM. A blocker for a sorc or Amazon...
Yea maybe amazon but any decent sorc should be able to play without getting hit _especially_ a pvp sorc.
Don't use them! There's no law saying you have to! ¬¬
Why people rather see no options in a game than see but not use? Many players like merc, many don't as well, so the mercs must be in the game, and those who don't like them just don't use, period.
I'd love to see the return of mercs, but I'd hope that the AI was a bit improved. I'd like if he became defensive when he had low hp and backed away from mobs.
They were a nice utility to accompany your class. I like using cold mercs with my fire/light sorc.
I love the idea of quests mercs you need to keep alive and temporary help mercs on quests.

"The gaming public now has focus on Diablo again, and with it comes the modern-age of trolling and jackassery."
However this time I want them to be more then attack and buff puppets, I want to be able to give them some skill sets (who would love a barb merc with whirlwind!), have there appearance change when I equip items on them like would happen when my character puts on items and have him be able to be a freakin mule!
I hate having to portal back to town all the time to clear my inventory.
OMG!! So many sound like they want this permanent party member that they can skill up and equip. Can any of you that want this please explain how this would even remotely play into the Devs comments on coop. Why would they want you to have AI parties if there concern is promoting coop. This should be about player skill and if its hard enough to need help get a friend not some AI toon or lvl up some more in lower areas.
CooP is impossible in Single Player. It is also impossible in Solo Multiplayer for people who play in passworded games on Hardcore, afraid of idiot PK'ers and hackers.
The devs didn't say anything special. DII had coop already. The game was already centered on coop. Can you still play SP? Yes. Can you still play solo? Yes, devs said yes. Therefore, mercs ftw.
Don't use them! There's no law saying you have to! ¬¬

The 'if you dont like it dont use it' is really a baseless argument. Blizzard is setting the 'game rules' as it were and, when all other players have a bonus aura and the game is balanced towards that, how can you compete if you do not. It's kind of ridiculous for a super powerful demon slaying warrior to 'hire' a mercenary to help him because he is too weak to go at it on his own. Again, this is an opinion and not a game-breaking feature if implemented in either way.

Its a suggestion thread, in the suggestion section.
Also people like having a merc, its buffs are useful and it helps get those bothersome monsters off your back if your in a tight spot, typically in a coop game mercs die very quickly and you have to rely on your team mates anyway, but during solo player having a merc is a life saver and helps people out generally well.
A merc already levels up anyway so why can't we make him more versatile and unique in appearance? I don't think making a game better is a bad thing and players expressing ideas an opinions is better then to simply shut up and say yes sir, no sir, three bags full sir.
Promoting coop is fine, its one of the many things that makes diablo great, but you shouldn't simply force people down one avenue and say its for your own good.
The merc system is in diablo 2 for fucks sake!
You can equip items on your merc already, asking that it has a visual appearance isn't something over the top. Your merc already levels up and auto-stats too, we ask that it has some more depth this time maybe new skills at certain levels or something and the merc was a perma-member of your party until he died and you had to revive him, yes you don't have to have a merc around, it generally when your solo running its helpful to have the merc around.
Your acting like we simply made the idea of the merc up with your post!
Talking about ideas about things that could be done isn't something you should ride people on mate.
Typically when people want to tackle something hard online they would go and get a mate to help them with the task, but what about offline solo play? should that poor bugger just give up, snap the disk and call it a day cause he is can't handle crowd control of 20 mobs coming at him at once with buffs, resistances and debuffs to your character?
I think you came in here very shallow minded, don't just think about your own situation, there are other people in this world not as lucky as you or myself to be able to simply call up a mate to play whenever we are able too, giving solo players the ability to have to merc is a perk and a damn good one specially if there character class doesn't have any pets.
I don't think theres a diablo player alive that doesn't thank a merc for saving there butt in hardcore hell durance of hate, solo or multiplayer! dolls are bloody murder
I agree it will be cool to have the 3 features you mentioned.
And for the love of god, make the merc have auto follow exactly behind me. I wanted to smash my head into the keyboard cause he didn't follow well in the bug cave (Act 2) you know the one with the staff of kings part.
First if you read my earlier posts I clearly stated I dont care if merc is or not. I just want it to be what a merc is a hired hand easily replaceable so those who want can have it when they feel they need it. However I dont agree with the idea of a merc you skill up and turn into basicly a AI driven second char. You might as well have it to where you can switch control and have the ability to play either one. I just think thats going to far and imho does not really seem like something that would promote coop play. Why would I call on a friend and split the loot if I could use a merc instead?
Gosh, I remember the bad old days of Diablo II launch when mercenaries sucked hard. I remember the upgrades that came with LoD and how that made the mercenaries like having a second player.
To that end, I'd say I am willing to play with the LoD mercenary system, but Blizzard shouldn't waste my time with the original concept given to us with Diablo II.
Mercs already skilled themselves up in D2. Every level, their skills gain a level. Act 3 Mercs magic damage goes up, Act 2 Mercs aura power goes up along with Jab level, Barb mercs skills go up with level. So, upping you merc is already implemented in D2. I spent hours leveling my merc to my level from normal (because mercs hired in normal are stronger). How did I level my merc? By helping lower levels, magic fund runs, cowing, or baal runs. Was I by myself a lot? Hell no, I play on hardcore servers so I was constantly with other people. We used our mercs a lot for the aura boost, and barb mercs as meat shields for scarabs, duriel, baals minions. If we did not have any sufficient meat shields, we'd all be dead or have trouble killing stuff at our level. So from my perspective, mercs aid our gameplay and do not destroy coop play. I see my merc as my little traveling buddy, not my vanquisher of hell.
