Re: Mercs? yes or no!
Mercs should Definatly stay and I agree with Jay fully on his 3 points on Mercs.
The backpack Idea is cool, but they wont make it so that you loose all your items when he dies...
Coz you might pick up something extremely valueble, then what....Are you gonna complain to blizzard about it....No, the last thing they need is more work...
Furthermore Id love to see you being able to fully customize ur merc ex. his name, gender, class etc.
And also the abilty to put equipment on the merc, the same as you, with all the same slots as you....
being able to create a merc close to you full strength.....
I was responding also to this last sentence of socials comment
I liked the merc in D2, but i honestly think he should just be a pale comparison to the "Hero", like he was in D2, he leveled slower, died faster ect ect.
Maybe add a few more armor pieces to them, belt/boots/gloves ? maybe A ring Slot. (maybe not..)
i wouldnt mind seeing some kind of Merc that spicializes in healing (since pots seem to be out) maybe some sort of acolyte/cleric thats being trained in demon warfare ? (just an idea) wouldnt mind healing support while i still had the pleasure of unleashing my wrath on the less fortunate dimmer minions of hell.
I seriously think mercs would need to be in the game. People have always found them helpful in soloing and also in doing magic finding runs. I hope they are still in the game.
I want mercs, they were a fine way to feel like I was playing in a group, without actually being - I had 56k connection, so no BNet games for me back then
Also, even now being able to fully multiplay, I still want my mercs for the 1st time I play and want to see the whole story in my own pace. Or just get bored of dealing with n00bs on BNet
One thing I always wanted in D2 that not even mods could do: get the act 1 rogue, than get the act 2 lancer AND still stay with the rogue, than the same in act 3 and 5. Aka: walk around with my 4 mercs at once, kicking ass. The replacement thing was frustrating for me. Hope my dream becomes true in D3
III. QUEST MERCS
Quest specific mercs who you need to bring from A to B. Maybe an apprentice wizard who can hurl fireballs while you escort him to a city. Perhaps a blacksmith trying to get to the city gate using his sword, etc. Maybe if they die you got to repeat your quest.
I always hate those missions. Its hard to stop the merc from getting glyched when you don't do exactly what you are supposed to.
Great point. However they are temp. There for the duration of the quest. One can assume. We could see them, but do they support a coop enviroment? I just want to know where they would fit into that line of comments by Blizz.
actually it looked more like they were for the duration of until they got killed. like the barbs in act 5 d2 lod
I hope there's no mercs like they were in D2. In fact, since they say that the best number of players per game is 4 or 5, i really doubt they will be there.
They were too dependant for end game builds. Sorcs with Insight or Infinity pole mercs, Summoners with Faith rogues... too ridiculous. Of course part of that is the rune duping, but still... think if you never had that perma merc, how hard would it be to be a solo sorc in hell?
i think they should keep the mercs. they are a valuable asset to any range char. But they shouldnt keep it so you can only have one kind of merc. sometimes the situations may result in needing a diffrent class type of merc. and you wouldnt want to take all there stuff off just to buy a new merc so they need to make a window when you go to the person to revive your merc that you can have 3-4 diffrents mercs that you can choose from if the situations calls for a diffrent type of merc.
Lol NO MERCS. Why? Why should we need them? Make the characters powerfull enough so we don't need no god damn AI npc with us. It so ridiculous now that u have a damn paladin with u even if u solo, giving u almost any type of aura. Make the game in a way like before LOD that every build and class can handle every situation depending on the player not some AI. If the player sucks and can't deal with some monsters then too bad. But everyone has a chance to success at least even without a merc.
Someone suggested they should be even more powerfull using full sets etc .. you prolly wanna put some commands to him too? And a way to follow him.. so first you command him to clear this dungeon then u put follow on him and then go afk.. gg.
There could be these mercs that you can't resurrect or equip tho related to quest or temporary help.
I could do just fine without any merc, hell Diablo 1 was Funner than D2 imo and there was no merc.
if any of you havent tried Diablo1 you really should, your missing out on a good game (if abit out dated)
Edit: Oh, just dont play it on battle.net, so many hackers (last time i checked anyways) unless you try it with some friends, play through it legit.
Yeah and if u play Orginal D2 and not lod the mercs dissappear when u change act that they are hired from.. they are also very weak and you cant put any gear on them. They are simply not needed at all.

I. TEMPORARY MERCS
Temporary mercs who are gained in a specific level or quest, such as two surviving soldiers or a bandit with bow and arrow. When they die they are gone. We saw the soldiers protecting Cain in example as such a type of merc.
II. HIRED MERCS
Mercs who you hire from a NPC, much as in Diablo 2. They can be leveled and can carry equipment. When they die you buy them back.
III. QUEST MERCS
Quest specific mercs who you need to bring from A to B. Maybe an apprentice wizard who can hurl fireballs while you escort him to a city. Perhaps a blacksmith trying to get to the city gate using his sword, etc. Maybe if they die you got to repeat your quest.
I agree with the temp mers, they were technically present in act 5. Those Barbarian running around act 5 killing stuff, you could heal them and if you helped them killed the monsters they were fighting, they would continue to work there way up the Bloody Foothills with you.
1 time there was me, my hired merc, two friends and their hired mercs, plus a handful of the random barbs. Awesome party. lots of people.
Quest Mercs is not so much quest mercs in the way you describe it but rather escorts who can actually fight for themselves, not little 1-2 damage dealers.
It would be cool if there where a few orders like "help me" "run" "Heal me" "get them" that you could shout, then the merc kept being autonomous...
It may have just been awesome timing and co-incidental, but I could of sworn one time with my sorc i was getting bashed by demons so I hit the "help me" key on the num pad and my Barb merc came running over and thumped the demons for me.
yeah i want emilio at my side!!!!
(act 2 mercenary)
No way Azrael. (also an act 2 merc) or Khaleel. the act 3 merc. Khaleel is similar to Kal-el (superman's real name. Really cool when Khaleel is a fire or cold merc.).
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
Well in that case they shouldn't be very powerfull but maybe give u some kind help in other ways.
They should be sort of fragile and not deal much damage.. but they would stay behind u pretty much. They could have some sort of spells that have some kind of crowd control frost nova or a bow user would have freezing arrow.. etc
Someone posted in the other thread that his merc could solo hell ancients without him doing anything.. anything like this should be out of D3.

No man. They should be sidekicks. A barb merc should still kick some ass but not as much as you.
A bow based merc should be able to pick off enemies and damage bosses.
I also think that the merc system should have attack and defend features. Aggressive, defensive, etc.

We don't NEED them. They're just fun.
Lighten up.
