People are pretty adamant about the graphics so I don't know if a truce is possible until maybe more screenshots are released, but I am glad they finally commented about it. I feel like it will probably stop the petition thing at least because as a fan... I have to admit that I was really embarassed when that happened. Though I also have a fear that this will spur a new frenzy of signers. I kind of get the feeling that the 52,000 was a bloated number because if people are adamant enough, which a lot of them seem to be, it is not hard to have multiple emails and to sign the petition many times per person.
And Slaynoq, thank you for commenting, that was really insightful and made me think.
I'm starting to wonder if there are two groups of people who are critical of all the vibrant colors in D3. Because one group (the one I don't find myself relating to) complain about the colors of the landscapes, environmental effects, and dungeons, etc. These things about the game so far do not really bother me. And I understand what that guy in the game was saying about variety in locations. I think that's an admirable goal.
As for the second group (I find myself in this obviously) is largely okay with the backgrounds, environments, etc. But what bugs us is the look of the armor, weapons, and even a few spells. What I can't stand in video games these days, and I swear it's like in any other game now, is the light tracer effect when a weapon is swung. Every single weapon now seems to glow and has a light tracer on it.
The thing about WoW and Warcraft 3 is that the universe it is set in seems so filled to the brim with magical forces, that even their food glows with a colorful aura. It seems like in Warcraft that magic is never scarce and you could keep a +2 fire damage weapon on fire all day long without this having any depreciating effect on the magic or the degradation of the weapon.
In D1 and D2, when you hit someone with a fire weapon, that's when you see the environmental effect. When you hit someone with a lightning weapon, only upon striking do you see the electrical discharge.
But in WoW, everything seems like it's constantly brimming with magic and elemental forces. So much that it feels like the entire world is going to transcend a corporeal world, and become this ethereal place. And these are the things that bother me about the art direction in Diablo 3. Super glowing objects that never cease, that burn my retinas and make the world of Sanctuary seem more akin to Azeroth and all its other dimensions.
To be honest, they can make all the rainbows, waterfalls (someone is actually complaining about waterfalls?), and tulip fields they want. Those things are realistic. They exist. But even in a world of magic, things like glowing weapons and glowing health and mana orbs scattered about, seem like something that really should be in moderation.
I hope this Keith Lee understands that many of us are more sensible about the colors in Diablo 3. But he does not even mention the way magical weapons and other items appear in the game. Or why he feels there should be light tracers on a simple regular melee weapon. Just watch the gameplay trailer before they upgrade the Barb's weapons. Even then they appear too magical in nature. These are the kinds of aesthetics that bother me about D3. Not the way a sunny day looks outside.
Agreed.
Totally... I really dislike the abundance of magic really in all games. It makes magic just seem a hell of alot less special. I say, kill the magic effects, limit all item glows and such to very high level/quality items or special instances.
That is how it should be! Sure, give that sexy level 28 sword some slight effects, and maybe some light output, but DON'T make it (as you put it) burn endlessly, or burn our retinas. I think that would make the world feel less fantastical and become easier to relate to real world medieval times etc.
Anyway, I accept some people want to "go on with the fight" but was wondering if *anybody* is prepared to put the colour 'problem' aside as a lost fight and go on with life as a Diablo fan?

So we've got over the problem of colour in D3. Great. Now let's argue about everything else not yet set in stone and help make this game simply great! Game on.

I think there are light tracers on the barb's attacks because he is using a skill. you know like bash or something. Anyway.. I agree with the rest of your post, and I hated the way the armor looked in demo, and I thought the elemental effects were a bit much on the weaps.
Anyway, I accept some people want to "go on with the fight" but was wondering if *anybody* is prepared to put the colour 'problem' aside as a lost fight and go on with life as a Diablo fan?
O ok I see it now.
wow, I'm shocked.
In this interview, Jay Wilson just proved to us that Blizzard is damn blinded by the success of WoW.
Quote from name="Jay Wilson" »
But are we influenced by ‘World of Warcraft’? Of course. As I think anyone who makes games nowadays, they have to be.
... I'm disappointed in him. Now he thinks that WoW was so damn great that anyone who makes games should be influenced by WoW... that makes me sick.
I'm not even going to read that article. The whole discussion is just annoying, and if I read it I might be inclined to reply to it. So yeah, of course I agree with the 'truce'.... but I don't actually think a 'truce' is needed. People have stopped talking about it on their own. There's only one thread here where it is being discussed, and I simply just don't read that thread. So yeah, threads like this really aren't necessary because, ironically, they actually spark the conversation even more - as opposed to its intention (especially evident with Siaynoq's post).
yay...truce...that would could carry about as much weight as the american emancipation proclamation. I'd love a truce having some effect, but no one would honor it and it's too late anyway. Everyone appears close to content now, the issue seems forgotten until too many people bring it back up and the flame rekindles.
on the truce i agree. Everyone has the right of his/her opinion, even if i dont agree with it. But i strongly agree with the way things look for Diablo III (anything that has to do with graphics, gameplay and the importance of quests).
In D1 and D2, when you hit someone with a fire weapon, that's when you see the environmental effect. When you hit someone with a lightning weapon, only upon striking do you see the electrical discharge.
that mostly happened because they couldnt make it look good back then. In Diablo 1 you couldnt even see a difference weapon (flails and maces looked the same, so did all swords, axes and armors - of different tiers). Diablo II tried to make armor look slightly different. Same thing happened with weapons. A fiery weapon was redish. A lightning enchanted looked more like yellow. Poisonous was green. It was easier to add the effect of it (the small electrical charge, or freeze effect for instance) than to make the enchantment visible on the weapon itself.
Thats why i like how it is now. Its not like it has the "unusual" pink glow some WoW enchants have. If its with lightning, you can actually see the electricity. If its icy, you see the freezing aura radiate from the blade of the weapon. Hows that not realistic?
Honestly, If you watch the gameplay video again, like I have and look at everything, not the character, it looks pretty good.
The people who are crying about the shoulder pads, BIG AWESOME SPIKY PADS ARE SICK!!! oh please blizzard, shrink my shoulders like the current length of my e-peen.
listen... I'm tired of this tried and true bickering about everything..
I completely changed my mind about the colors, I think they do the game great justice.
I think the most mature and grown up way to do this, would be to wait for more in game footages.
Obviously Blizzcon will NOT (I can bet my life, my wife and 50.99$. Just kidding, I don't have a wife, I have too much life ahead of me :P.) reveal new classes in Diablo III in the same area as the first gameplay trailer. I think they will probably reveal the newer classes in darker areas or more "satisfying" locations of the map. Just to show Diablo fans that it is not WoW like.
I agree with the Mods though. Trolling has increased a lot in this forum since I signed up a while ago. And I can honestly say despite my short life in this forum, that Trolling has gone UP a lot since the announcement. It was fun back then when there were many many theories on what those ice images were. Now, all you see are trolls threads aimed on instigating unnecessary arguements.
agreed, i also believe the place to reveal (at least 1 more) a new class will be BlizzCon. They took extra room for the Diablo franchise so i'm guessing this years BlizzCon will be quite interesting for us Diablo fans.
Too bad its in California, though, couldnt afford to go to Paris, California is impossible.
So Blizzard won't be changing the colour scheme. That much is definite.
Do you think it would be better for this web site if we just stopped the bickering and got on with being positive about D3?
Or would it be better to allow ourselves to be torn apart by those who wish to campaign against Blizzard?
Why don't we call a truce?
NOTE: I have fixed the above link. This is definitely the very recent discussion with Jay Wilson in response to 52,000 signatures. The previous link was from four weeks prior. My apologies.
how bout you suck my balls? I'm not stupid enough not to realize that blizzard is just trying to make more money of the WoW-side population. I quit WoW because i outplayed it. I want a new refreshing experience and when I think "diablo" compared to "warcraft" I think huge differences. But no, there bringing in there WoW stuff into diablo. People need to realize that blizzard games have always been completely different and refreshing from eachother. This is not the case from what they have shown us in diablo 3. I meen look at this.
Look at that crap and tell me it doesnt look like an undead caster from WoW, i meen seriously. They have the exact same cast-style when they move there arms casting a spell as they do in WoW also.
Also they brought in there blue//green tint from WoW aswell into the dungeon in the gameplay video. The armor is WoWish. The weapons have a HUGE glow affect, another thing clearly from WoW thats completely over-exagerated. Some graphical textures are clearly from WoW in the environment. The painting textures outside clearly are over-exagerated and cartoonish just like WoW, This can also be said about the armor aswell. The inventory is the same as WoWs. They have purple items along with unique items now. Bags. Theres like 3-4 rainbows in one area in the outside part video, and its not even raining, another thing clearly from WoW and makes no sense in the diablo universe. Not even because they just dont, but because it aint even raining and theres like 4/5 of'm lol wth? yeah.. The list goes on and on, but I will stop here.
It aint just about the colors, that guy said there not changing the stuff i just mentioned also pretty much. Well I've said it before i'll say it again. I wont buy this piece of shit unless its fixed, I speak for myself when I say that. No truce.

No matter how much I am annoyed at the green glow, you guys are overreacting... the game is low-poly, badly textured, and somewhat bugged at this point. It's not looking its best, and to judge how a game would look in the end is pretty damn hard.

Aye, I can see where you're going. And I can also see why some Diablo fans are upset, but before I say anything else, lets not turn this into a flame thread. I, with absolutely shit psychic abilities, can tell where this thread is going, so lets keep the insults to ourselves and release them all in Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan threads :P.
Anyways. Companies that produce games often use the same type of graphical element for all their games, or at least influencial. For blizzard, they use this style of art not because they want the elements in the game to be the same to attract the same audience, but because they want the game to be enjoyable to people with all sorts of systems. Blizzard attempts to create amazing and detailed environment using probably one of the lowest requirement of graphics. Of course, it would not look amazingly dark and evil like resident evil games, but it would allow people with lesser systems to play and enjoy D3 as well as run it smoothly.
Trust me, if Blizzard wanted to make D3 more gothic, they would. The photoshoped versions of D3 which made it more gothic were IMO horrible because the graphics would look terrible and outdated. Blizzard like their games to be simple and enjoyable for people with different types of systems, and they obviously want their audience to be able to run their games smoothly. And so far, the type of graphics Blizzard use is probably the simplest yet most amazing graphics I have ever seen. The path that they follow is very half life 2ish, amazing details but amazingly low system requirement.

I agree completely. But it would be very simple for them to change some things while keeping the look and feel stay true to Diablo, or a new look and feel that is not a WoW feel. Having high end graphic capability has nothing to do with it. Its purely style.

Ahh but graphic capability does have everything to do with it. Like I said, if Blizzard wanted to give D3 resident evil or silent hill atmosphere, they would. But its not easy to create such an atmosphere without revamping the entire graphic style of Blizzard. A dark environment will not work well with the current style of graphic that blizzard uses. From the photoshoped pictures that you see, you can kinda tell that it would be a step backwards in terms of graphical technology.
That is not to say that Blizzard cannot hire an entirely new casts. But this game has been in productions for a very long time. So the graphic style has already been considered long before they could go on to character design, weapon design etc.

not to mention, this was back when they had 14,000 signatures, not 52,000.
still I doubt that Blizz has changed their stance since then
