I know that this subject comes up all the time, and that people are probably tired of hearing about it. I'm wondering if any ideas are in the works in terms of addressing this.
I propose a system that has 5 tabs of shared space, and 5 tabs of non-shared space for each character on top of that. Would this seem reasonable? How hard would this be to implement?
I am in no way a programmer so this might be wayyyyyy off the mark, and for the record, I would love more stash space. But off the top of my head the first thing I imagine being an issue is the capacity or load of the servers with all of that extra data for all of the extra players, essentially you are doubling or tripling the information and data in terms of the stash space. I am sure its possible and I am sure its within their budget but that is just what I am assuming is an issue. Personally I would like to see more stash space being bought with more and more gold as most of the players are well in the billions and dont have much use for that much gold.
Wyatt Cheng, said it already. BLIZZARD WILL NEVER GIVE US OR EU MORE STASH SPACE. I don't know if you knew, but server space cost money. And unless micro transactions gets implemented in US or EU its impossible to infinite stash space. What you are asking for is borderline S****d. you are asking BLIZZARD for at least 15 more servers. There is a max of 15 character slots.
You know that thing called Kanai's cube, use that. You know how rare it is to get a GG gear piece, rare. all the RORGs, unities, CoEs, etc you can salvage them.
I was unaware Cheng said that, as far as micro trans for it I would not be opposed to paying for that.. But in response to the last thought of yours I would disagree. Multiple toons with multiple builds some with gg some with lesser, Could definitely use more space, I now have to have toons that hold the space.

Kanai's cube isn't out yet. And it may very well change how we use the space that is given to us. Many of us tend to keep different kinds of the same item depending on what we intend to do (ie T6 gear vs greater rift gear). That uses up the space very quickly especially if you are playing more than 1 toon.
I agree with fstr21 concerning paying for more stash space or character slots. It's certainly something I'd consider doing. I resent your condescending tone.
i hate microtransactions and dont pay for them in almost any game i play unless i deem it very worthy. for example, ill never spend real money to get skins in LoL, but i paid for some in game currency in dc universe online way back when because it gave me 2 expansions with it.
saying all that, ill gladly pay for stash space in d3.

Yes this topic comes up a lot. A ton, actually. As fstr21 Kamui said server space is a premium. Is it possible to expand storage capacity without requiring more server space? I would say, definitely. Kanai's Cube is an example of that being done. I'm always hoping there'll be a magic bullet; eradicating the tetris crux. The goal is to come up with an idea to create more storage without actually creating more storage. Make set items mutable? Reduce standbys such as gems and keys into gui currency and such? Those kinds of things. I think Grim actually said that the second one I listed is a no go.

Comparing to WoW, D3 has a lot more gear and crap to store.
And comparing to WoW, you can have about the same number of characters (on a server).
But in diablo3 you get less bank space for ALL your chars, than one char in WOW gets just for himself...
Maybe that's why they ask you to subscribe if you play World of Warcraft ;-)
If it comes down to money, which inevitably it always does, then what's stopping them from introducing micro transactions? They already have a system in place for WoW. I'm sure plenty of people would pay for more storage space/character slots. Will they not make enough profit from them?
For a game that we don't have to pay every month to play, I understand their mentality when it comes to game content and development. We shouldn't expect new content all the time etc etc...but I think this is something worth considering no?
Small things, like a separate aggregate bank for gems and mats would go a long way. Similar to how Guild Wars 1 did their materials storage, separate from your gear stash and each different type of mat was represented with an icon, next to it a tally of your total amount.
We'll get more stash with a new xpac. Not much, but we'll see more room. To my knowledge, Wyatt Chang NEVER said in such terms that we'll never get more stash.
He said, and I'm not paraphrasing "If we give you more, you'll just ask for more". A snide way of saying that people can never have enough stash in a game like this, and there are technical limitations to what can be provided.
Seriously, lets stop kicking this dead horse.
Like it has been said many times before, no matter how much space they give, people will never be satisfied.
People need to learn how to manage the sh*t they loot.
Kanai's Cube will mitigate this problem, since we will be able to "extract" the unique affixes. With this, not many reasons left to keep legendaries gathering dust in the stash..
Seperate inventory for mats and gems would be more interesting than a new stash tab. Some other game out there do this.
Even if I'm one of those who DC about space, I'm always end up havin big problem at the end of a season. And the end of season 3 will be worst than ever. But thank god the Cube will put some water onto the fire for some time. With that I'll be able to use at least 2 tab for set item one for mats and gems and maybe one for good legs.
And yes people should learn how to manage their space and loot. Even if I'm not one of them I don't complain about wanting to have more tab.

The season is underway. Don't know if I'll make it through.
Small things, like a separate aggregate bank for gems and mats would go a long way. Similar to how Guild Wars 1 did their materials storage, separate from your gear stash and each different type of mat was represented with an icon, next to it a tally of your total amount.
They thought of that for the 2.1 patch, I think, making crafting mats a currency. Problem is, players won't value the mats if they are "automatic". In games there needs to be some permanence, some physical form of the item even though it is totally virtual. That's why rift keys had to be put in that slot in order to open a rift. It gives the keys substance.
Blizzard is not opposed to micro-transactions, but their playerbase tends to be. It would be perceived that players who can afford to store more stuff have an advantage over those who don't. If people keep filling up their tabs, adding more tabs may not be the answer, it may exacerbate the issue. That's one of the reasons behind absorbing legendary powers with Kanai's Cube.
I guess another fix that is not adding more stash space is adding a universal crafting material panel. And a gem panel kinda like the heirloom tab in wow.
All crafting mats are stored as the same way gold is stored.
And legendary gems go into a storage where you can just take out the highest level gem. No sell cost so you cant exploit it.
This would also sort out an annoyance. Having to log onto different toons everytime you play different characters. To transfer over the gem. Cause lets face it.
You do not level 2 bane of trapped to 50. You use the one and swap it around
I play all characters except for the wizard and I don't have any stash problem, my only stash problem right now is to find place to keep my bovine bardiches and puzzle rings for the next patch lol
I have been thinking about this for a while and I finally came up with a new idea this morning. What if the cube allowed you to save the armor for you?
It would work like this:
I’m playing my barb and I get a piece of set chest armor to drop with some stats. For example, 400 vit, 400 int, 3 sockets. This would be great for my WD that I am trying to gear up. I head over to the cube.
I deposit it in the cube and then log on to my WD.
My WD goes to the cube and pulls it down so I can equip it.
After completing a Grift on my WD, the same piece falls with better stats.
I go back to the cube and save that one. However, I have to destroy the old armor piece when I save this new drop, since I can save only 1 piece of that chest in a set.
It’s basically like a library for drops. You can only have 1 of the items in shared storage to be recalled and only 1 character can have it checked out at a time. This way, I can’t have all of my characters equipping an OP furnace that dropped 1 time. However, all of them could benefit from it.
Another idea that could be used would be to allow the cube to destroy a full set of armor to create a recipe for that set or a single item with a lot of cube mats. The rarer the item, then the more mats that are required to make it from the blacksmith. That way, when I want to clear out my helltooth set now and play with it again later, then I can just craft a new set instead of taking up 12 spaces in my inventory.
Even if you think that these ideas are crap, I still think the cube will be the solution to space going forward. More stash is not the answer.

Stupid, since you may want different stats variations on the same item, what you are proposing makes no sense unless all properties are fixed. Now you can have (even on set chests) elite damage reduction (not to mention secondaries), which would be impossible in your scenario. And chests usually have the same stats for most players, once you dive into more diverse items like weapons or jewelery things get more complicated.
LD: As for the other 'arguments' against adding more space, there is no point for you guys to debate this. You are clearly in the wrong. As I said in my previous reply, as of now you can't even keep one pair of each bracers and their variances in the whole stash, and that's an issue. While some players are more focused in keeping just a few items, discarding the rest, praising the cube extraction process, you are missing the fact that is becoming even a larger issue when you are faced with the impossibility to change the way your build plays out since you have crushed all your items besides those you think are most relevant for that build. The future changes may further acerbate this issue as you may find yourself in a corner not being able to combine different types of armors with the help of the cube due to the fact that you only have one pair of armor for each slot, while the rest are trashed. The more items are introduced, the more problems you will have. And either way, maybe you can have enough stuff to play your characters, and still have empty slots for any relevant items, however not all players are in the same boat, since a lot of them are complaining. Accept this as a fact and extract yourself from this discussion and accept the fact that any addition in terms of stash space will not affect you in a negative way!
I see what you are saying. It doesn't stop you from still having multiple items, but can stop some cases where hording can exist.
Anyway, i think I prefer my idea for creating smithing plans better than the storage idea anyway.
It is probably not directly relevent to PC players, but I have observed that on (PS4) console, the size of the game save (which is stored locally rather than held on the cloud) is exactly the same size regardless of how many characters you have created or how much gear you have.
Clearly, this indicates their data design uses a fixed template and layout, and I guess the easiest way to visualise it is that it is a large wardrobe with a number of different shaped drawers built into it, designed to hold specific type of gear. Whether those drawers have anything in them or not does not change the size wardrobe.
It surprised me a little that they took this approach, though it does simplify things from a capacity planning pov. How much storage you need is a simply multiplication against the number of registered players. If they had taken a dynamic design approach (meaning unlimited storage is at least a theoretical possibility) casual players would probably end up requiring less storage (thus less cost) while hard core players would cost more. Annecdotally, it appears most people on forums like this have long since hit the limit, but only a full analysis of existing registered players would provide a clue as to whether a dynamic file structure would have been more efficient.
Of course, the PC file structure may be different, but then again the console file structure, although held locally, can be backed up to the cloud, meaning it is still costing Sony storage space. This leads me to suspect that the basic system is likely to be the same. Having said all that, it is very likely they are using generic data compression techniques to further save on physical storage requirements.
Anyway, when I noted the size of the save file was static and fixed, I knew right then that there was little or no chance that we would ever see an increase in stash space. In order to offer that, and maintain their fixed file design, the file size would go up for every single player of the game, and that would result in a huge increase in the damands for cloud based storage. I can guarantee you that Blizzard game designers have had many meetings about this with the bean-counters and get shot down everytime because of the underlying costs involved. sadly, they are a victim of their own original design constraints (and lack of foresight). My bet is they thought the size of the wardrobe they originally created was going to be more than enough to meet the needs of even hardcore players, which just goes to show how hard it is to crystal ball gaze into the future.
I see what you are saying. It doesn't stop you from still having multiple items, but can stop some cases where hording can exist.

That sounds great on the surface. Once a salvage limit is reached for a particular legendary item or set the Blacksmith learns to make it himself with the proper resources? The only drawback I see is that it far overshadows functions the cube already possesses unless they've changed it since I played PTR.

There is a big difference between "people will never have enough bank space" and an actual problem with bank space.
D3 has an actual problem with space in the bank, because many reagents/gems/items are a "real" item instead of "virtual" currency, like gold.
The 2.3 features will greatly help with that, since we wont have to store various situational legendaries anymore (extract power).
But still it would be a significant improvement if we could double our bank space for a high gold price.
I guess another fix that is not adding more stash space is adding a universal crafting material panel. And a gem panel kinda like the heirloom tab in wow.
