As I understand it, if you want to maximise legendaries per time, you make a new rift as soon as you killed the guardian because of the blood shards. But in multiplayer games I often meet people who want to clear all the rift. I wonder why?
IMO finishing rifts is only for maximising legendaries per rift key stone.
Am I missing something? Why do you want to full clear rifts?
Not just the keystones, though. There is also pretty good experience in a group of four while clearing rifts, so I imagine a lot of people want that extra experience. Also don't forget that your chances to find a legendary item are 100% greater in rifts (unless that's been changed), so many people probably want to take advantage of that increase and clear the whole thing. Personally, when I'm playing with friends that don't care about keystones, I like to turn it in right away as well, because I like to see that big boost from doing so. Then again, I actually enjoy bounties and I'm still relatively low on my Paragon levels (310ish), so it really feels like a boost to me.

i would choose my own religion and worship my own spirit, but if he ever preached to me i wouldn't want to hear it. i'd drop him, a forgotten god, languishing in shame; and then if i hit stormy seas, i'd have myself to blame.

This argument makes no sense. You are in a rift either way, if you clear it or if you just fight up to the guardian. The 100% are always there.
The difference is just "100% bonus legendaries" vs. "100% bonus legendaries and working on some more blood shards". I know which one is more effective.
Exactly because of the rift keystones. If you have to farm more keystones, you lose time doing bounties.
I see...
I guess i am in a special position then. I still have 1000's of rift keys around from the time when doing split farm runs on normal was the fastest way to get Rorg.
For me it isn't because of the rift keystones. It's the fact that most of my legendaries drop after I kill the rift guardian. Doing rifts up to the rift guardian, i'll be lucky to get 2 or 3 legendaries, as opposed to 5-8 if I clear the rift.
Yeah as others have mentioned, more xp and more legendaries. Also, now that you get double gobs, those blod theifs can be worth like ~7 rifts by themselves. The fact that there are so many goblin packs and goblin pairs everywhere just makes it more profitable to clear full rifts and not just quit after the RG. when 2.1 came out, people started quitting after the RG because of the trial key but now that people have hundreds of trial keys it's no longer needed imo. I prefer full clears because i like to maximize xp gain.
I'm not going to give it to you, but suffice it to say that your chances of finding a Legendary are exactly the same before and after the rift guardian. If you're only interested in Legs/Rift shard then you should finish off the entire rift, but if you're looking for the most legs/time spent in the game like most people are, then you should close asap after the rift guardian and start another rift. The extra legs from blood shards will more than make up for the 20-25 seconds spend closing the rift. If you're really concerned about those seconds, then send one person back to close the rift while the rest of the group keeps going.
RIGHT NOW I see a lot of people saying it's best to finish a rift because rifts are the only place where goblin packs can happen, and we're on double goblins, however, again, if you spend 20 mins finishing a rift or 20 mins rifting to RG, closing, starting a new rift, you should see the same amount of goblins because you're rifting for 20 mins either way.
Honestly I think the only people that want to do full clears are people who really don't understand RNG or people who got absurdly lucky with their RORG early and don't have thousands of rift shards like the rest of us.
I used to swear by closing the rift after the guardian, it's simple: more blood shards per hour and more xp per hour if you ignore the time required to farm rift keys which I usually had stacks of. Before 2.1.2 I started running with some fast groups that liked to full clear and that got me going back and forth between methods depending on how fast the overall group was. With this patch playing on my DH I pretty much have to full clear, I mean seriously the RG spawns in about a minute in a good group. I don't have the patience to farm bounties for rift keys if a rift only lasts a minute or less.
TL:DR I prefer full clear to cut down on bounties but you can make an argument for either method.
If I am in an area that is high density I clear the rest of that and then check the next zone for density. But right now I think it is a good idea (if your speedy) to sprint through to the end of the rift in search for goblin packs.
For a looooooooooong time I hated clearing rifts, always wanted to quit after the RG. Since 2.1.2 hit that has changed. If your group has a decent speed the RG dies after 1-2 minutes, so you'll spend 25%-50% of the time in town waiting for the rift to close. Of course you can go back into the rift and kill some more mobs but I really hate that because imagine a mob dies 30 yards away and drops an ancient Furnace... with 1 second left before the rift closes. You could also leave/re-join game, but it doesn't sound like a lot of fun to me to restart a game 40 times per hour. Another reason for restarting was to maximize blood shards and as Jamoose already said, this is not true anymore since most blood shards come from Blood Thiefs.
The rift key fragment argument isn't really one - learn how to maximize Normal bounties and you can get up to 150 (or maybe even more) rift key fragment per hour (we've done this before 2.1.2, farmed over 1k fragments as a preparation for this patch and it was so insanely fast on Normal).
I'd say it's mainly a matter of preference. A lot of people read too much into it without having collected real data... it'd be interesting to do a few hours of full clears and than a few hours of restarting rifts and compare all the numbers. But you'd probably waste most of your time writing down this data ;-)
Let's say it's T6 and guardians are dropping ~100 shards on kill. We'll assume you aren't spending those shards on weapons, which means the guardian is 4 legends.
This means that if you complete the rift in 2 minutes you're getting (2 Minutes of Legends)+4 every run. Working out to a minimum 24 Legends/hour.
For completing the rift to be "worth" the time the rest of the rift at minimum needs to drop greater than 24 legends/hour, if it takes 6 minutes to complete the rift total then you'll need to have found a minimum of 3 legends during the rift. For a 10 minute rift that's a minimum of 4 Legends.

100 Blood Shards grant you a CHANCE to get up to 4 legendaries.
The Chance is 10% if I recall correctly, so actually 100 Blood Shards = 0.4 Legendaries.
I still think that closing the rift grants you more legs/hour unless you have a really really insanely fast group.

Yah, oops. I was distracted. Derp.
Works out to 10 legends an hour. Assuming .4 legends every 2 minutes. Meaning "worth it" point is at 2 and 3 legends respectively.
I clear because i just cant be arsed (bothered) to open a new one after the RG death unless i get a map i really dont like. Density is higher so im not spending large times not killing stuff. Its a personal preference if you ask me. You gamble with kadala or you gamble with what might be after the RG. Like bagstone said RGs spawn so quickly now its all about time spent standing doing nothing.
Perhaps I cannot speak for others, although its a semi safe assumption, but the legendary drop rates are higher after the guardian than beforehand. So if you're truly seeking legendary items, then finishing the entire rift is the way to go. Playing the game to get blood shards and gambling is much less rewarding than actually finding them anyways.
Immediately restarting will maximize XP+Legends /time
Full clearing maximizes XP+Legends /keystone
The former is higher efficiency and so the more common practice among experienced/dedicated/serious players.
For me that's not how it works. I almost never get a legendary from the RG, and i'll be lucky to get 1 legendary before killing him. If I fully clear, I end up with at least 5 legendaries (most of the time). My best was like 8 or 9 with a full clear. It would take me at least 5 runs of ending after the RG to get the same amount. Not exactly maximizing anything there.
Oh, and the "experienced/dedicated/serious" players I play with fully clear rifts...
Bounties are time consuming as well and the legendary rate is poor. By closing the rift earlier you are effectively decreasing your playtime ratio of rift:bounty. That has an impact on your overall legendary drop rate as well.

Legendary drop rates are consistent throughout rifts.
neither side is right or wrong in terms of clearing rifts. the way blizzard described how to find items is to constantly kill stuff. that being said, regardless of what you're doing, either remaking after RG or full clearing, you're still killing stuff. i've found that i actually get a couple more legs every few runs if i just clear the rift. will they still have dropped in another rift if i made it? possibly? but i like to clear the whole thing usually, especially if it's a cool map. shittier maps or if i have a headache or something determine when i close the rift after RG. a couple other peoples' logic is that they get more blood shards remaking after RG, which is fine.. i don't need blood shards so that doesn't matter to me. they also like to get the completion bonus exp immediately after the RG, because some people want to level fast. at the end of the day, there isn't a "best way to do rifts." legendary items drop from you constantly killing monsters. do what makes you happy.
