I guess we will see how it goes. I think when the server finally goes up, the first things we will need to do is just mine and level out some areas. Then, we can start building some communal buildings like place with lots of chests to put building material in. Once, we get that set up, then we can look into individual housing and how we want that to work. All I know for sure is that I want everyone to be able to build whatever type of house they would like.

I would recommend land size determined by the power you have in the society. So the town leader would have the mansion on the hill while the simple miner would have a simple house in the neighborhood. Your land size is also determined by the money you have (gold) so you can buy land from the town leader. You can also buy mountain views, lake views, plain views, pools, and more from the village for gold.
This would also mean that the currency can be gold to make it have some use in the game (along with decoration).

rofl. But i thought we could have some kind of socialist experience here.

PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.

So the miner is the only one who can actually make any money? Or what are people gonna trade him for, houses built by "expert" architects"?
Just throwin it in there.
Well honesty would be expected here. The miners would of course get diamond picks and work their asses off getting stuff. The red stone would go to the electricians and the gold would be deposited into the "Bank" where pay would be handed off accordingly. Besides, we can make all furnaces "public", which would prohibit furnaces to be in households that would force miners to turn their gold ore into bars in a public place. Gold bars can be like "cents" while gold blocks are "dollars".
Being red in a game like Minecraft is really the easiest way to go. We're all here to have fun really. :\ Community chests work and sharing works well.

Yeah, there really is no reason to create a market/currency in the game. Overall, it will just be all of us helping each other out. The personal spaces are just so you can create whatever you want.

Yeah if you're going to get into any sort of money rationing "you miners suck you live in lame little houses" thing I'm outta here in 5 seconds because in my own game I can build myself whatever the fuck I want.
I love how the workers are shafted again in favor of people who don't do anything (town leaders). Just. Fucking. Love it.
Why do you want this? I see this game in its multiplayer form as a game of collaboration. Working together to build something that everyone can enjoy.
Sure you could build a society with a set hierarchy if you wanted to, but I just don't see the point in doing that just for the sake of it.
Also, "power" is not something you can just create. I mean, you could say someone is a "king" but that doesn't give him "power" by default. Should some people have different rights compared to others on the server? We have the different positions to get a good structure, and that already gives certain power to the ones with higher ranks. Power as in responsibility to organize people. Isn't that enough?
I always felt stuff like hierarchies and currency and the like were necessary evil generated because there are too many people and most of them are dumb. No need to create the necessary evil where it's not necessary...

Lol? Thanks for the inspirational speech. The reason why we wanted power is because A) organization, recreate society, and C) to lessen chaos. We want people to work toward goals and have people with roles, and people above them who leads that field, and have the town leader who acts as the general leader. Besides, we appoint new leaders. This is a republic, not a monarchy.
First, Cobblestone is the broken up stone. You then put Cobblestone in a furnace and make regular Stone. (Like the stuff you see in mountains)
Second, why don't we have the titles where everybody does their thing but everybody helps everybody else out. It's not like the miners don't know how to build if they need to and the builders don't know how to mine if they need to.
I like a combination between Socialism and Capitalism, if that makes sense.
Also, third, did I mention to anybody that I don't like Fraps?
One more thing, with respect to the idea that everybody gets their own area to play in, would it still be possible to have main roads so everybody knows where they are going. We could also name the roads. Adria Ave. Mephisto Boulevard. Etc. Trag'Oul Lane. Etc.
And lastly, fifth, did I get the Lead Architect job?
The reason an economy doesn't work in the first place is ease of obtaining building materials and lack of customization of the end product. Also, we don't have a whole ton of people playing, so communism will work. You run into trouble when there's tons of people abusing the system or tons of people in general. In a group like ours, if there's a jackass we can get rid of him quickly and easily. IRL, not so much. A division of power isn't about the economy in this case then, and if we go with a simple democracy, that would probably be to everyone's liking. After all, you shouldn't get more power if you volunteer to be a miner or a leader, you should just be volunteering to do more.
As a conductor (which, as a transportation person) am I cool with building roads as well? I plan to have a mine track go between the main village and outlying buildings, construction areas, mines, etc.

No there aren't any restrictions. We just don't want chaos going around. We would rather have set jobs titles to expose people's expertise rather than have pure anarchy. The job titles aren't restrictive. They are simply there to be there.
Also, the village leader would be a trusted person who will lead the village in the right path. This isn't a monarchy though. I think you all took this way out of proportion.

Lol? I'm just voicing my opinion on the matter, not trying to give some speech.
I never said you wanted a monarchy, just used king as an example. Of course I agree that we need organization and we have. Haven't you read the first post? We already have different positions for people to organize things. Certain people will have more "power" as in the power to make decisions about how we should achieve our goals.
About "B )" I don't really know.. why do we have to recreate the real-life society?

Read the OP again, it has been edited. This is what we are aiming for.
And I don't think you want a monarchy, it just sounded like you wanted to artificially create a society with a set hierarchy instead of letting it grow and build on its own.
I don't think we really disagree with eachother. We need positions for organization and some decision-making, and with the structure Scyber has made that should work just fine

Can there at least be a separation of power?
