So over the years I have attempted to make a few clans. On Diablo 1, Diablo 2 and World of Warcraft (boring btw); and it's never really worked out for me. I know there are such things as successful clans/guilds out there, but I still have yet to see one (except for WoW).
So my question is, what's the point of being in a clan anyways? Even on WoW there isn't much someone can't do by themselves. And for a game like Diablo there is literally nothing someone couldn't do by themselves or with a friend or two at most. There just isn't anything there keeping everyone together. So what's the point?
I know that at the hight of the 2008 ladder season a friend of mine was in a clan that did ubers at least three times a week and held competitions and other stuff. I think it depends on who you know.
Its about being a part of a group of players that you know so that you dont have to deal with assholes in public games.
Seconded. Being in a clan of a group of people, whether you know them in real life or not, and getting to know them through the game is fun. You share and enjoy a common item, playing the game.

Just a group of people who play together. People who know each other usually work better together. I might join one in the future when the game is actually released.
It is alot more fun playing with friends. But what's the point of adding any complexity to it? Why call it a clan? Why add rules? What do you get from adding a name, rules and complexity? In my opinion, there is no point. The idea of a clan is tantilizing but there just isn't anything keeping it together. Atleast until Blizzard adds a reason to be in one. And I can't think of one good suggestion that would work in a game like Diablo. Except pay people to be in one or have clan only areas?

Because then you can show other people, "Hey, these people and I are in the same group. We have the same goals in mind. We aren't that other group that likes to PK people, we're that group that likes to help people. If you like our group, join us. If you like their group, join them."
It's a way to show the outsiders looking in, who you are.
The point of most, if not all guilds, is to expand the number of friends/allies available to you. Sure, maybe you only need like two friends to play with - but what if you only have two friends and they aren't on?
This is the reason I started my guild, Sons of Ohr. While many other guilds focus on group success and establishing/maintaining an 'image' - S.O. exists only to provide players with a wide range of contacts in all the realms and to organize events and get help.
You guys have yet to convince me of any good reason to be in a clan. The two best reasons so far that I've heard though are something like. "We are a group of like minded people." and "We are a group of people who like to maintain an image and a certain standard of game play".
I mean I've had tons of friends play Diablo and sure we've tried to start clans but they never really make it. The only way I'm going to be in a clan is if Blizzard adds a clan tag, and I join a clan. Just to kind of say I'm not a newb and I roll with these guys. Sitting there all day and helping people is as boring as hell (lol).
Sometimes you've just gotta get out there on your own and have fun, right Sixen?
I'm not denying that, TCOE. Being in a clan is a personal preference. Some people would rather play alone than play with a group. Others would rather play with PUG's than fixed groups, it's all personal preference.
Personally for me, I enjoy playing with a group than playing alone. The multiplayer experience is what makes these games so great, in my opinion.
Sounds like you're heavily influenced by what "guilds" were in D2. They'll have support for them in D3...
Reason why I like guilds? Well..a guild vent. I like to talk with a microphone and not text ( I know mic is going to be in D3). Obviously friends and usually guild mates will help you with whatever you need help with or give you free items or cut you big deals..Some douchebag killing you over and over again? Call your guild mates in to ravage him..
If you don't like having a social network then don't join a guild

If you're so against helping others and having fun in an organized group, why are you trying to get people to convince you of why it's worth joining a clan? It's pretty obvious you're not interested. Isn't this kind of a waste of all our time, then? So what's the point of this thread?
Alright let me clarify a few things.
1) I made this topic so that people could actually sit down and convince somebody who usually wouldn't join a clan (not just me, I'll explain) to join one.
2) I made it to have something to talk about; something fresh, not to argue, really.
3) I love the idea of a clan, I've just learned from personal experience that it's more enjoyable to build your own "social network" from meeting and playing with random people. I feel as though the clan systems of Diablo just hold you back. But I will admit that joining a clan is like having X number of friends instantly. I have no idea what support features will be in Diablo 3 for a clan so I can't comment on those.
4) You guys still haven't made any good points yet. Why not say some unique things the clan your in does differently from other clans? Something besides, "I like playing with the same people everyday, all day, 24/7." S0Met1NG/!!1!!!?!?/?!
This discussion has gotten stale. No one here cares what you think of guilds. The fact that you, or other people like you, do not understand the advantages of being in a guild is not the fault of me or the other posters in this thread.

If I was going to join one then I would look for one that I feel comfortable with the other members and the rules of the clan.

It's just how it is, you have to learn to accept that people like different things and don't dwell on it.
When you get down to it, there is little "point" in playing Diablo in the first place, except for fun(or in some peoples worlds, griefing).
