After coming back to my crappy HOTA barb for 2.1, the first set I finished was the IK set so I specced for a perma-COTA-generator build, similar to this one. I worked my way up to Grift 29, while saving pieces I know are needed for other builds. I'm still missing a couple pieces I want for this COTA spec (T&T, Furnace, SoJ, a decent ammy), but I'm already starting to see some limitations. The Ancients just don't survive that well at Grift 28+, and I really don't do enough damage with weapon throw to contribute much. Half the time I spend 28/29 just running out of ground effects, and hoping the bros can kill mobs before they die.
While trying to farm for T&T, I have managed to gather pretty much all the important pieces for the other big builds. I have all pieces for all 3 barb sets, RoRG, Lut socks, Vile wards, Hexing pants, all the lightning pieces (Odyn Son, Thunderfury, Fulm, Thundergod's), Leoric's, Cindercoat, etc. I feel like I am trying hard to make my specific build advance, but in the mean time I have a ton of other gear (better?) collecting dust in my stash. I have a lot of options, but I have no idea which would actually be a good idea. I could really use suggestions for a top-tier build. Should I try to work in leapquake to my current COTA build? Stay on target for T&T and buff the bros? Scrap it all and become a whirling lightning storm, or full VileCharge?
Bonus question: I have the "follower cannot die" accessory for Scoundrel and Enchantress - I noticed that my templar is starting to spend a lot of time dead at grift 28+. Should I switch to one of them until I get the Templar accessory, and if so, which one is best for high level grifting? I feel like I would really miss the templar heal...
tl;dr: Assuming you had any gear you wanted, which build would be ideal for solo Grift progress past 30?
Solo GR Raekor is gonna win no matter what. You can clear like 35-38 with WW/Leap/CoTA but GL past that imo. Raekor is getting 40+ on season now and non season upwards of 43.
Only Downside to barb is their lack of single target which has made me swap out of my barb lately on season I got to GR 37 at like 12m clear but it annoys me 39+ is basically based on did you get lots of packs + an open rift to drag everything with you around the world... I love the spec but barb just annoys me with its lack of Rift Boss dmg .. clearing the rift itself is a joke with 100% ignore pain with ignorance.
I'm starting to understand that sentiment. I put together a VileCharge set, and while I can see how it would be effective I just don't enjoy the playstyle (also I play in a group fairly often). I also experimented with ColdQuake Leap build, and while it was fun, I struggled to make much progress due to low damage output. I guess for now I'll stick with the perma-COTA and keep praying for some T&T's. I could see myself pushing into the low 30's with this spec, and in the mean time my Wiz and WD are starting to look pretty interesting...
