So I've been wondering what the best way to improve the gear on my Barbarian would be. I've read a bunch of posts as well as the guide at the top which recommends the best items for various slots (Stomshield, String of Ears, Justice Lantern, Helm of Command). However, I have not seen much discussion on how the best way to progress towards gear of that level.
I've been easily farming Act 1 for a while, and realized none of my gear was going to cut it for Act 2 (no resists). So I sold it all and bought gear that got me to the stats I have seen recommended for starting Act 2, but I still get worked by any elite mob pack. Obviously I need to upgrade more gear, but don't know what path to take. Should I save up money and buy a sweet legendary that I would keep for a while or just make a bunch of smaller upgrades. Any advice would be awesome. Thanks.

This is an a2 spec. You strongly need loh. Roughly 500 is good enough for act2. Your resists are still too low for a2, you need like 900 and physical should be around 1000. I don't know what your vit is but judging by 999 it's low. You want 45-50k+

Hmmm, you're probably right. I'm just confused because the guide that is pinned at the top claims that with 800 resist in Act II you should be able to , which is not at all what I am experiencing. Also, there was a thread by Zrave where he was able to take 1mill worth of gear and do a Belial run, however I feel a lot of that is because his enchantress is well geared.
Your stats are more or less fine for Act II, there will still be affixes that will tear you up. I guess it also depends on whether you're talking about farming specific bosses or trying to go through the whole act. I've been farming Belial with 5 stacks for a while now and do just fine with lower resists than you have (around 800). One thing you may try if you're playing solo, gear up your enchantress better. Most people ignore their companion, but if you can spend about 200-300k on the AH, you can buff her up quite a bit to where she is doing very reasonable damage. Mine has a listed dps of 4500 and she routinely hits for upwards of 25k on some of her abilities. This makes a huge difference. Just focus on getting items with really high Int on them. They don't have to have much more than Int, so you can usually find some pieces with really bad rolls (+ random resist/globe range/globe healing/etc), but 200+ int for really cheap. I would try to make sure you get at least a little vit on a couple pieces, otherwise she'll die a lot. But that made a huge difference to my farming experience on my barb.

I'll try gear my enchantress a little more, she could probably gain a good bit damage for very little money at the moment.
Im pretty much stuck on the first quest in Act II. Elite packs just seem to wreck me so fast, especially Sand Wasps and melee guys that hold their blades backwards and do a series of attacks. I've downed a couple of other packs, but it took a while.
Are you using any Life on Hit? I've considered selling my current weapon and getting one with LoH, but it provides a lot of str and vit so I've been hesitant.

Don't need LoH for act 2 at all, walked over it on barb with 48K hp/11K dps (about 14K under berserker rage)/~650 all resists and 900 phys resist under warcry/9500 armor under warcry and enchantres buff.
Could do 5NV Kull/Belial runs faster then on my better geared monk with stats listed above.
Upgraded stats over past couple days to 56K hp/~750 resits all/1050 phys resist/~10K armor/14.5K dps (~18 with berserker rage) and yestoday done two 5xNV siegebreaker runs (swaped wrath of the berseker for ignore pain). Using my monks Ouroboros amulet with 90 str and 400 LoH (resist/Loh amulets costs way more then i can afford atm), have to say that LoH is barely noticable becouse there's no way i can stand in champs/elites face without ignore pain/iron impact up unless they've some pathetic affix combination.
P.S. Have to mention that if Tyrael was still doing 40K dmg/hit it'd be piss easy to farm siegebreaker, too bad he hits like a wet noodle now.
OT: It's hard to give you advice looking on general character window - would be much easier for all trying to help if you would post gear screenshot.
I seem to have passed some sort of threshold and am slowly making some progress. I can kill some of the champ packs, it just takes a while and there is a decent chance I will die once or twice depending on the affixes. Some packs I have no chance against though and have to skip/avoid (spiders with fire chain, arcane enchanted, jailer, shield... wow!).
I'm trying to figure out if I should spend my money doing a bunch of small incremental upgrades to each piece of gear or if I should just try to make one larger purchase for something like a decent String of Ears.
i have better stats by 400 armor, 8k hp and 1.1k life on hit but i have around 50 resist less and i pretty much faceroll trough act 2 so i guess investing in some life on hit would be cool but at the same time probably expensive aswell
I kind of want to try to get some LoH, but at the same time my current weapon provides a large chunk of my str and vit. I think I would have to upgrade some of my other gear before getting a weapon with life on hit.
I'm still trying to figure out if I should make a single large purchase on something like String of Ears or just smaller upgrades to all my armor.
