So in the past, I've said that Hungry Bats sounds like it is single target damage and most people seemed to agree. However, after watching the Witch Doctor video on the Blizzard site, it looks like they show Hungry Bats and it does do an area effect explosion.
If you look at about 2:25 he casts a firebat that explodes on contact (a fairly big range even... 10 yard radius?)
This would make it very competitive with Dire Bats. I think I would prefer a straight line AoE (and control over the ability) but Hungry Bats does so much more damage! It's a tough call.
I personally felt like that was just animation flair and not aoe.
I agree though, I would prefer line aoe over a small-ish burst. Maining because of the way the mobs seem to naturally pack themselves, especially when squaring off against WD pets, a few well placed cross-fire dire bats would ruin a mob packs front line.
If you watch closely, it kills the mob it hits + the mob slightly behind and to the right. It looks like it also damaged the mob to the left of him and knocked that mob back a bit.

The bats not to overlook are the Cloud of Bats. They do 195% weapon damage and the damage increases by 10% every second up to 50%. That means, they do 215 (195*1.1) damage to 292 (195*1.5). According to the description, they call forth a swirl and damage nearby enemies, which implies a pretty good AOE. Has anyone seen the graphics/gameplay of this one?

It functions the same way as the Druid's hurricane spell from D2.

From my perspective it looked more like the bat was damaging anything in its path.
100% penetration, sort of like flaming arrow.

Where we watching the same video? The bat DISTINCTLY blows up when it hits the first monster.

link to video please?

Dire Bats animation at 0:40, Hungry Bats animation at 0:53. Both look awfully similar but Dire Bats seems to be bigger while Hungry Bats seem to be smaller and faster
I know what dire bats looks like and I also know that dire bats don't explode when they hit an enemy... they travel right through. It's hungry bats... they look very similar.

What I saw in that video seems to be more like Dire Bats at 2:25, though I could be mistaken
