Nothing to do with the thread, though it went off topic from the 2nd post but CCP released some info on the male:female % in EVE online http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/CSM_voting_patterns you can see the playerbase is approx 4% female. I think it probably varies a lot for each MMO, I would expect a much higher % in WoW because I doubt the cruel world of EVE online appeals to many women but still nowhere near 50/50.
I wrote a really long post about how I describe a gamer and different types of gamer but it's too difficult to put into a short post so I'll just say I think it's someone who plays games(not farmville/facebook/phone games etc) for 20+ hours a week. People who play CoD for a couple hours a week aren't gamers.

I never could get into EVE. I tried to play it and after the 3 hour tutorial I was still completely lost with what to do next, lol. Games that are easy to pick up are more my style.

Well to answer your question OP - I think it's kind of annoying when gaming sites throw women on their weekly video updates. For example when that picture of Pico from Curse showed up guys were drooling all over it. Now she's in their weekly video thing. Hmm I wonder why? There's also quite a few technology sites that put women on their news videos and it's clear they have no interest in the subject at hand because they are reading a script and not getting into any detail.
I guess it is increasing views though? I don't know. Doesn't get me to bite.
As far as girls in games I feel like there is two types. Type A is: Yes I have boobs here's pics, comes in vent talks about boobs, talks to all the guys. Type B is: Yes I am a girl, attractive or not I don't really talk about it and usually ignore all sexist comments/drooling nerds. Not all girls are Type A or B but it's just from personal experience. A lot of gamer girls also play cause a boyfriend got them into it. I've sure tried to get every girl I've dated into gaming (Usually WoW) but it never worked for me.
All based on observation and personal experience though. When I find out I'm gaming with a girl I usually don't care about the fact. I want to date women I meet in real life but I have nothing against people who find love in games / long distance stuff.
Hmm Been lurking for ages but just realised this is on the curse network so I had an account =)
Really there is a difference between "gamer girls" and the what you are talking about when it comes to people on g4tv and so on. I mean sure leah b jackson and those girls are propper gamer girls but a huge amount of the "gamer girls" in media are just there to look good. Since you mentioned g4tv Sarah Underwood is a good example of that :P.
I'm glad you mentioned G4TV. I wasn't even thinking about that. To the OP, I hate it when hot girls are on gaming/technological/whatever sites just because they're hot girls. If I'm blindfolded, I'll be more attracted to the girl who says she's an avid gamer than one that says she's a model. If someone's on tv or in a video, you should know what you're talking about, and be emphatic about it. If you stumble or just drone on, then you're annoying.
On the topic of the topic that wasn't actually the topic, but the topic that most people were talking about: I don't think the ratio is too high. Somewhere between 2:1 and 4:1 guy:girl. I know some female gamers, but I know a lot more male gamers. And my definition of a gamer: someone who puts a decent amount of time and effort into games like WoW, Call of Duty, Diablo, etc., i.e. no Farmville. But for all I know, some of the "male" gamers may just be chicks that don't wanna deal with the drooling and idiocy often associated with my gender. I'm not gonna say anything about whether girls can game just as much as males, because all of that "Men are more competitively-orientated" is just a cultural norm, not a universal one. I know hardcore/extreme females, and if I knew more female gamers, the numbers might lean towards a rather equal amount of hardcore female gamers to their male counterparts.
Jeez, I write way too much when I'm bored. I should be doing homework...

Haha, dude I've broken the mold on this one. Now, whenever I encounter a 'gamer girl' on the internets without a face, I imagine them being the most unattractive beings. I mean, fat, pimple-faced, socially awkward, and embarrassing to be seen around. I'm tired of being disappointed, and worse yet - disgusted.
I generally start people off with an F when I first meet them in real life anyways.

Well, its harder for women, as in any other field, to dedicate yourself seriously to the game. In WoW, in our guild a few guys had babies, but they didn't stop raiding, because it was theirs wives responsibility to take care of the babies. But when a couple girls from guild (really good players by the way) had babies, they had to give up the game completely for at least a year. And after a year, its not really interesting to get back. The guild moved on, old friends quit too...
Well, I think most pro gamers are actually in their 20's. Planned baby making age is more like 30 I think. What were their ages when they had babies?

So girls are automatically ugly on the internet... but when they turn out to not be ugly then you're disappointed or disgusted? Am I reading that right? Or were you disappointed/disgusted when they did not meet your standards?
If I'm blindfolded, I'll be more attracted to the girl who says she's an avid gamer than one that says she's a model.
So you have to be blindfolded to find a gamer girl more attractive?
That wasn't my point at all... what I was actually saying was the opposite. The whole blindfold part was to say that personality > looks. Gamer girls can be be at a whole spectrum of physical attractiveness, just like everyone else. But, since most of the time you never see other gamers unless you're sitting next to them, it's kind of hard to tell what she looks like.

Ha ha.. sorry I was just being a wise-ass. Ha ha, just got home from work so I'm still set in that mindset. I agree, though, personality > looks, but I still need to be somewhat attracted to someone to like them.
I could imagin the epicness of playing with a gf, but honostly, gaming is our thing (not to mention that girls cant play).
Girls wish for guys they can go shopping and have a cup of tee with aswell, but seriously. I think both parts are better of these " dreams "
Wow.. Not sure I understand the last sentence... but uh, girls can game too!

Um, you read it wrong, the latter is correct. I mean to me, they are ugly until proven otherwise. I think when it comes to girls on the internets, most guys are the opposite?

The same goes for me. Also personality-wise. I usually think people are guilty/idiots until proven innocent/intelligent. I like to imagine everyone I meet online is ugly, because that way, if I turn out to be correct, I'm not disappointed. I've met some pretty awesome people online, but on more than one occasion, a girl that I thought was smart/funny/whatever turned out to be pretty damn ugly. Sea monster is a more appropriate term. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. (actually they don't go to this site, but that would be hilarious if they saw this)

Freddys girlfriend here, I have been playing games since i was 4, 28 years ago, ive been playing diablo for 12 years now

I don't care if a girl plays video games because, more times than not, I won't see eye to eye with them on certain games or genres. It's not a matter of sexism, it's a matter of personal taste. If we both happen to be into ARPGs, then she might not like Diablo and I may not like Guild Wars or whatever.
And, more times than not, I'll want to talk to a girl about other things. My philosophy is that we're all individuals and we all have our hobbies and vices. I've become less interested in video games over the years, but I'm always looking forward to the future. If a girl loves video games, more power to her. We need more girl gamers. I just think that we'd sooner disagree about games than ever come to agree about something. I have yet to meet a full-fledged girl gamer, but I will cherish the day I do meet one.
