Only start if you can live with the idea that your character will be killed by a disconnet or a server lag.
I stopped HC after losing my more or less immortal barb to a disconnect. No matter how good your char is or your playing skill, you can always lose your char to blizzards server "quality".

It's amazing to me how often people blame Blizzard for every lag spike and disconnect. In nearly a year of playing, I almost never have any lag, and have never once disconnected. A friend of mine lags all the time, disconnects many times a day, and also has trouble getting web pages to load, and is "so pissed" at Blizzard when it is clearly his ISP that is at fault.
The servers aren't nearly as laggy or unstable as people think. Their ISPs, however, probably suck.
If you like using the AH then use it. It's amazing how fast you can clear through content. I just started hardcore myself, and I think it's essential. Of course there's people that don't like the AH, I respect their opinion, but if you dont mind, then go for it, you'll find it fairly easy, at least I am until now.
Also, play with a group, they can save you if you have a lagspike or other things that might not be under your control.

Almost never ? One deadly lag is enugh, you know.
I only lost one char to a disconnect, but that was enugh for me. After overcoming all the difficulties and finaly building up enugh wealth and a good enugh char to clear inferno for the first time and then you get stopped at the end of act3 by a timeout... Well, it is not for me.
I am not saying that it will happen all the time, but for me, once was enugh.

Be patient and be afraid, very afraid. The times I have lost characters was because I was overconfident or stopped paying attention to what was happening.
Hardcore is a lot about risk/reward... and minimizing that risk as best as possible in order to achieve the reward you are seeking. Don't get motivated to do things your character isn't ready to do yet simply because you see others doing it.
my #1 tip for hardcore, be prepared to die. It's gonna happen and you just have to move on. Chances are it's going to be to something stupid. I lost a guy to a door that had fallen maniacs on the other side that auto-exploded when I opened the door. I lost a guy to a fire pit. It just happens.
Everytime you upgrade equipment, put your old equipment in your stash. That way when you start over, you always have upgrades available to you in your stash. Don't invest heavily in equipment 40-50 and don't forget that starting at 48 you can get level 60-63 equipment with reduced level requirement. Exp on an item trumps all! Get a helm with a socket and put a ruby in it as soon as you can.

Fair enough.
I'll stop highjacking this thread now.
