These ideas are nice, thats why I posted similar ideas to Bashiok some months ago.
We should see these in Diamonds, Bloodstone and Sapphire in expansion.
This means 9 more things:
* Life Steal
* Fear
* Crit Chance
* All Resistance
.. and more!
that's nice, but i think an expansion is far from our vision now, since the game is still on development state they should look into those ideas now, i think 4 gems are good to go if you add the mixology idea i gave to pull up different stats or same stats on the current gem with a little nerf on it, the game is pretty incomplete, since Diablo is an unending game due to you're necessity to fetch items we could at least get some further costumization for our toons, PvP might come later this year and it would be a mess se another team with the same exact build and stats as yours
There is nothing wrong with the gems as they sit. And if you think ur fail idea is so genius why not post it on the official forums instead of these unofficial forums?

10% crit and 100%crit damage compliment each other. If you have 50%cc it is more efficient to socket an emerald to your weapon because it will net you more dps.
If you have 30% crit chance and 350% crit damage you will want to put ruby because of 10% crit chance which will increase your dps more than crit damage.
It is the balance in itself
Oh and 30% cc from gems is not possible because only ruby weapon sockets add crit chance.
Red should be changed to % Damage from static damage. That should fix the issues it has with high end weapons. Because just boosting the numbers to be good on 60 would make devastatingly great gems for leveling...
Also, i dont believe changing the helm effects to be good. Right now its a nice balance: XP, MF, GF, all three not affecting your numbers. If suddenly Red went from XP to Crit chance, it would have even worse balance than right now.
Good answer. I think only the red and yellow gems need to be modified for weapons. I don't know why this thread started talking about helms, but I don't see anything wrong with the helm gems as they're probably the most diverse, now. Sure, MF gems will become obsolete if everyone hits Paragon 100, but I don't really see that happening. There is a good mix of people using MF, life, gold, and XP.
I agree some gems definitely don't provide the same value as others in the different slots and leveling vs. end game, but the changed you're talking about are taking them the polar opposite way. Gems are supposed to supplement existing stats and provide items that rolled sockets some customization based on your needs. Honestly, Emeralds (weapon) and Amethysts (helm) are OP and their values should be reduced to bring them more in line with the benefits of other options. Increasing the stats gems provide will only further add to the value of sockets and basically make them a 100% requirement for weapons and helms --- limiting gear diversity and itemization. Replacing things that aren't used at all with stats like attack speed or crit % isn't a bad idea, but you have to remember just because you don't use them in their current state doesn't mean other people don't find value in them.
I have one more issue with gems that is neglected at the moment but rather important.
The fact that emeralds are so powerful for weapons caused their price to skyrocket. But the problem emerges when emeralds are used for armor sockets. 58 dexterity bonus costs much more than 58 intelligence or strength bonus which creates very imbalanced gem progression system.
Monks and demon hunters have to pay much more to improve their gear through sockets, barbs come next and wizards with WD have the cheapest class specific gems.

That's completely obvious when half the gems in the game are a waste to put in a weapon slot when compared to the benefits provided by the other half. I have no idea how you can claim that there is nothing wrong with gems even in specific cases such as this, they should all provide a strong case for themselves depending on the build you use and as it currently stands they don't. Its a very reasonable idea though I have trouble believing you gave it more than 2 seconds of thought
Sorry if another poster has mentioned this already, didn't have time to read everything, but still wanted to put this out there before shooting off to work.
The problem, is that emaralds increase their weapon level up benifit at some point, going from 5% critical hit damage per level, to 10% per level. No other gem does this. They should double the level up benifit for all gems at some point (possibly even earlier for other gems/slots).

The weapon sockets are the bad ones... All the weapons have emeralds in them, sometimes you see the odd amethyst in the off hand.
The OP has a great idea of what can be done with the weapon sockets but I would like to see if I can add my own input:
Ruby: Increase the critical chance by 0.5% for each level the gem gets better.
Emerald: Keep the same as is now.
Amethyst: Maybe add a bit more life on hit to it.
Topaz: Increase attack speed. Maybe not by a certain % per level but like the new weapons that have an exact number of attack speed they add. Scaling up according to the level of the gem of course.
Sorry if a double post or I said something some one else already said, I am at work and do not have time to read all the posts...

Gems all cost the same amount to craft
