Ok, so just to start off...I am not a HARDCORE player. I have logged 200 hrs on my Barbarian and most of that has come from farming Acts 1&2 Inferno. I am SLOWLY making my way through act 3.
My question is as stated...How often are people finding upgrades they can actually use vs. how many of your upgrades come from the AH?
I actually have a decent (but not great by any means) magic find set that I farm acts 1&2 with...each run netting me ~25-40 rares per run. I have seen my fair share of 62-63 items, usually 20 or more on any given night. My frustration is that out of 200 hours of play (probably 175 of that farming gear) I have found a total of ZERO upgrades for my gear...all the gear that I have has come from the AH.
So, with that being said, if Blizz had not implemented the AH (which many people were against from the beginning) I would basically be stuck in Act 1 still (or worse, Hell) trying to find my FIRST upgrade.
This isn't a 'QQ, this game sucks' thread...I am still playing regularly and having fun. I am just wondering if this is an excessive time to go without an upgrade?
Found like 4 direct upgrades from the already powerful items I had. Not much... But I have played like 132 hours on my monk now. Which is by far my best geared char. (act4 inferno atm)
I have yet to find an upgrade for the character I am playing. I have been farming act3 inferno for 250+ hours (150+ of those with 200+ base MF). I have found lots of godlies for every other single class though :P.
I've found, from the time I started farming inferno to now, roughly 5-6 upgrades including ones I've replaced with upgrades. Most commonly the more simple items such as shoulders and belts that I don't need many stats on to be good for me (A glass cannon orb wizard) and can clear the entire A1 Warden + Butcher and all guaranteed elites.
I have %310 switch mf gear and only switch on warden and butcher (I simply don't bother with champ packs)
I've also made around $100-$120 and 8-10 million gold. spending all but $40 for further upgrades.
For my main WD? Only twice since hitting Inferno. However, I am raising one of each class, and I'm getting to the point that my WD is going to gear them all out with the quickness.
It's around 200...like I said, it's not great but not terrible. Also, if I have read correctly, MF only allows MORE rares to drop and doesn't affect how they will roll out, correct?
well, since we all (or at least almost all) have 90% of gear from AH, its very tough to be actually finding upgrades
but imagine...without AH, when u finish hell you have ilvl 54 gear max, now at that level of gear, u gonna find upgrades more often than in the first scenario
hope u understand what i mean
another thing on topic...yesterday i dropped 130 int, 69@, 3% crit (~8mil @ AH) bracers, so that was one hell of an upgrade
Yes, that makes sense. However, even the items I am finding that are rolling out well (STR, VIT, ARM, RES, LoH) are rolling out with such ridiculously low numbers that I am wondering if they would have even been upgrades without the AH. I can't tell you how many level 63 items I see with like +23 STR...and weapons, well, that's not even worth talking about!
I have upgraded my ammy at least 3 times, and now have a 28 mf, crit damage, decent int ammy for my farming, a near perfect int rolled ammy with high crit damage and a few other nice things for when I feel like progressing, and a nice 35% mf dex ammy for when I finish leveling my monk
I have also upgraded my chest, legs, helm, and shoulders (for my mf set)
I've also found tons of upgrades for other classes for when I level them up, or for my buddies.
You have to remember that if you only have one max level character, then you're less likely to find an upgrade because getting a well rolled high ilvl rare still could only be well rolled for 1 class, or one stat-group.
Also, as for the "if there were no AH I would not have been able to get any upgrades" mentality, people would just trade items in person like in D2 if there were no AH. You'd be able to get items, probably many times for cheaper than what the AH is now, from people directly.

If you are farming act 3 in MF gear, you don't need any upgrades, since you're allready filthy rich, right?
In game: roughly 4 to 5 in about 1 1/2 month of farming act 1 (full run) and half of act 2 (mostly only 5nv and then belial). Rest is from AH. I just upgraded my barb for 1.4million to get ready for wiping in act 3.
If you want a single player game, there are thousands out there for you to choose from.
If you insist on playing an online game, you must deal with the fact that online things, such as an AH, are available and probably required for higher end content. Just as in MMOs such as WoW, you cannot progress past a certain point solo, the same is true here.
Anyone remember that there were only a handful of viable end-game builds in D2? how about having to farm for HR's that were EXTREMELY rare just to trade for items, or make runewords to make those builds efficient? yet D2 was better for this?

I simply don't understand the anti-AH crowd.
I'm not bashing the AH or anti-AH in any way. I was just curious if people were experiencing the same luck I was having while farming and it appears they are. That's all.
Post patch ive found 5 upgrades for me, 2 godly pieces for sale on ah, and ive sold a bunch unid stuff that may or may not have been upgrades/ godly. but ive been selling alot on GAH some random decent stuff for like 20k-50k. I've actually found quite some stuff, but some time ago. Lately my gear requires some quite specific stats for it to be an upgrade, which is obviously difficult.

There is ALWAYS upgrades.
And my MF is around 275 unbuffed atm, 350 w/ NV.
On the Auction House, dozens upon dozens, for fairly good prices
And the second sentence is the cause of the first sentence, and I don't mind it. A lot of people don't seem to realize it, though.
