Maybe save that for several years down the road when the existing challenges wear thin. As it is, I plan to never use the RMAH. All the years I competed in D2 melee tourneys, I never bought gear and only used what I found/traded for. There's a certain feeling of accomplishment in not relying on your wallet to win.
I'm not even sure why there is an elective mode? What was the explanation for making this seemingly absurd option a default setting?
Having said that, they should give players a trade screen so we can do trades without the damn hand-holding.
Has anyone tried playing the game without using elective mode and without using the auction house? Just a thought. Might be a fun challenge.

People use the auction house? O:
I'm not sure how serious your response was, but I use the AH all the time. I sell and buy items constantly. It's a great way to make gold or to fill in the gaps in gear. In fact the AH is way more cost effective at filling the gaps in your gear than the blacksmith is.

I'm in Act 3 Nightmare right now and 100% of my gear is from the AH. It sucks to get loot and know it will not be better than what you'll end up getting at the AH.

People don't use the auction house?
I've never used the auction house... For some reason it feels a bit... I don't know... Un-D3y? If that makes any sense.
I don't care that it's there at all; there is just something that Irks me when my friend messages me and is all "I downed so and so with EASE." And it's because he got a few lucky buys on the AH.
I guess I'm just gimping myself, but oh well. Finding my gear and trading is how I'll always do it.
Speaking of, about to start Act 3 Hardcore. First time there.
I tend to play clean (i.e wear only what i find myself) - but for now for my first level 60 I'm buying off the AH. However, every subsequent char will be clean.
And levelling without elective mode... for hc? Are you mad? I'd die loads without at least 3 defensive skills.

Well.....I guess that's the new way. I remember a few times starting over in D2, having to hustle Pgems to get my gear going. You couldn't even think of going to Hell mode without an extreme amount of resistance gear.
I'm not seeing that drops are really all that out of proportion to D2. I remember several times doing 50 Shenk, Pindle, Meph runs in row without anything dropping of any real use or value.....and that was with 350% MF. I used to sit back on a Friday night and smoke some rope, determined to get some loot. I'd name the games 'MF1...MF2" and so on until I hit 50, and often....a big fat NOTTA.
It's a week and a half into it and i'm hearing a lot of crying about people not finding items equal to items that I would go weeks without finding in D2. Some of this shit is pretty darn silly.
In all my years playing D2 I only ever found 3 Elite Unique items. I got plenty of Exceptional and Normal Uniques, but only 3 Elite.
And people complaining that they're not getting anything of use now... laughable really.

I think my most valued and memorable drop was back in 2007, Meph dropped me a perfect eth HoZ. I remember leaping from my chair as I identified it.....200% ED. That was after years and years, thousands of runs.
I found a Lo rune once while zeal dueling. One of us accidentally clicked on a rock and out it plopped. It was absolutely hilarious, as duelists always have their entire inventory space taken up by charms. We were both clicking on it, trying to pick it up. It was bouncing around making that rune "plop" sound. It was a race to the stash and back....I lost the race. .....lol
I re-rolled an eth vortex zak shield once to 1% from perfect ED, that was pretty thrilling I suppose.
My Diablo "career" has always been summed up with the mantra "I'd rather be lucky than good".
