This amazes me, as I am an original Diablo fan, as it was released, along with Diablo 2, it is shocking to see the 180* turn in a lot of people's opinions on the game since it's release. I know we had all of the initial complaints from back in 2008, such as the "bright colored" atmosphere, I don't remember what else from back them but I'm sure there were some.
Then the beta comes out, I personally didn't hear people complaining. The beta covered up to the Skeleton King, correct?
Now, we finally have the release that I was prepared for as I downloaded the game files a couple days before the 15th. Then we had the massive crashing and some people experienced loss of character data, and some people loss of characters completely.
So here I am, coming from all the other hack/slash games since D2, the big ones being Titan Quest and Dungeon Siege 2. I personally feel like I am playing a darker version of Dungeon Siege 2, which is not at all a complaint, since Dungeon Siege 2 was very long and very difficult, not to mention the randomization similar to the Diablo games.
I enjoy the game, even if it doesn't feel like Diablo, I can't put my finger on it, but something is amiss. My complaints are the lack of customization such as attribute points, and skill sets. Someone else said it in another thread, but now every Demon Hunter for example, will have all of the same skills, but may or may not have found the different runes for different skills (you find those, right? or are they automatic after a certain level?). The only difference will be the characters damage and armor.
What are some other opinions before/after the launch?
I find Diablo III amazing so far in every aspect i have played it so far. And it actually makes me mad to see some people (thankfully the minority) whine so bad that "this isn't diablo, this is crap" and such comments. I am not that mad at your post because you somehow set it kindly but still. It is a GREAT game and it still is a sequel to Diablo II,yes. Of course some changes have been made but actually i like it more. Especially the Skills/Rune system. It actually forces you to see every aspect of your character and then lets you decide how to want to play. If you want Diablo the exact way you dreamt it then...go to sleep. And Enjoy playing :-)
Oh and i will tell you something that (unfortunately) Blizzard Employees cant tell to any (potential)customer. And yes i know no blizzard employee will ever read this post.
If you don't like Diablo III...DON"T FUCKING BUY IT. And if you bought it already and then got disappointed...well,you are the retard because they had announced Guest passes so u could just try it Beta-style and decide.
I will continue to play Diablo 3 on all difficulties, with each class, at least once. But I don't see myself waiting around another 10 years for another sequel.
I don't see how anyone can like skills/attributes being forced and automatic, there are no "builds" anymore for the different classes!! Every level 60 for whatever class will all have the same skills, and there are no "skill points" at least not that I've noticed. Once you activate a skill, that's it, maybe you'll find an item to increase damage but the skill remains the same.
There are no class paths that can be created, for example; What if I wanted a Demon Hunter who specialized in cloaking with traps, and I put all of my earned skill points into these skills. You can't do that anymore, you're being forced to go the same path as everyone else.
I'm starting to believe that all this game has in common with it's prequels is the name, that's it.
My biggest fear was that the game wasn't going to feel like a Diablo game to me.
I know it didn't look like Diablo (although I think it does look amazing)
Removing the ability to pick your attributes and what skills to level was one of my favorite aspects of diablo
So I was pessimistic for awhile. Not enough so to stop me from getting the game. But when I actually started playing - I'll be damned if it didn't feel like Diablo.
There are certain changes I really dislike, but overall I love the game, and it gives me the same feelings of excitement as past Diablo games.

The attribute and skill thing baffles me, can you name a game, any RPG or hack/slash that is similar to Diablo, that does NOT let you choose you're attribute/skills?

Seriously dude please read the 243536389 threads that exist of what your "attempting" to debate. ARPG.... but stat points become everything huh, I guess Final Fantasy isn't a RPG. No body is forcing you to do shit, and from what I can tell not many people are using the same builds so any other theories to that? What if I wanted a demon hunter that focused on X abilities... I dunno maybe I'd pick the 6 abilities and 3 passives that applied making that approach viable... You're at least 8+ months late to be crying about Diablo 2.5 unless you didn't pay attention to anything till the release day.

I'm really enjoying it. It actually has met all my expectations so far and I'm only in Act IV of normal lol. I understand people are frustrated with the issues that are included with every single online game to launch in the history of gaming but they will see the light once they log off the forums and log into game.
Story is good so far, gameplay is great, and I fully understand how to use all the features. Really well done.
Edit: I also really like how the game slowly but surely develops. I don't know how to explain it but anyone who's gotten into late Act III probably knows what I mean. It sort of refers to a post above about how the attributes have shifted into the gems which is cool. The fights intensify and you really start to have flexibility in builds when u start to reach the late 20's. People really need to play through normal before saying the game lacks something - then we can being to judge.

Maybe that has to do with me having a life outside of gaming. I followed the info as it came out for 4 years, but I didn't look at every video, and read every tid bit on skill related info.

Heh, same here. When I'm at work I just sit around thinking about the game. When I'm at home I just play the game nonstop. Will probably die of sleep deprivation sometime soon.

I never said that I didn't like the game, never said that I didn't enjoy the game, never said that I will stop playing the game. All I'm saying is that some of the key features that made Diablo, aren't here. The MAIN one being complete control over character customization. I mean, I'm not sure if Blizzard actually started the heavy customization, but they perfected it by the time Diablo 2 came out. So why they abandoned this feature, I have no idea.
As soon as I get home I'll be playing this, probably until the time I go to bed.
What I mean is that I didn't have time to follow every piece of info being released regarding D3, or every time Jay or Bashiok released a statement. The things I paid attention to were the Blizzcons and E3's from 2008-2011.
20 points into 1 ability, 20 points into ability 2 to avoid immune, 60 points for synergies, and 11 point for prerequisites. Spam one maybe two buttons... then remake 40 characters so I can try everything out. I don't think that's the true form of customization but in either case I hope you enjoy the game.

Aint it the truth glad Ill be home in an hour another long day. I was going to go work out after work, but fuck that why do today would you could do 2moro.
Diablo is about loot, trades and pvp, that being said i will wait to hit inferno and for pvp (God knows when)
My first impression of the game is: Not bad, but not good either, i understand some people are disappointed and the only reason i'm not one of them is because i wasn't expecting a lot to begin with.
Get real, folks, the diablo you all knew is dead, a few years ago i said right here in this forum that D3 had a pretty good chance of being blizzard first bust (i was flamed to death ofc), and what you know, its not even beta and its already looking that way.

I'm thinking the same thing but if the servers are still iffy I might try to get a few things done today so I have the rest of the week cleared when the servers are running better.... but want to play badly.
@Drstrong I couldn't tell you that but all I know is this game will put you on your ass in NM Act2, apparently it starts getting hard by that point, kind of reminds of D1 jump to nightmare.
