Does it scale worse later on? I'm at level 15 and can craft items up to low 20's and I've put maybe 70% of my money into BS so far. Keep in mind you only need to do it once and then all characters have access to it. It's sad enough that people are already in Hell mode might as well make something that takes some effort.

Playing Diablo since 97. I know nothing and having nothing good to say, I be a troll.
I had my Blacksmith and Jeweller maxed* by the end of Act 3 as well as having a full page of Inventory. There is almost nothing you need to buy with gold anyway, so why not spend it on them?
*Maxed as in maxed as far as you can take them in normal since you need Blacksmithing/Jewelcrafting pages to get to levels 5.
I have been spending all my gold on items from the AH, you can buy bettter items for cheap without having to rely on randomness of crafting. Also I figure by the time I'm in hell gold will be much easier to come by and therefore BS will be easier to level.
I'm not bothering to level him until Nightmare/Hell, when gold depreciates, and gear is more impt.

I grew up gaming without internet forums. The entire phenomenon of being upset with a game developer makes no sense to me. No sense. I cannot imagine spending my time and energy being upset about something I choose to do for recreation.
You guys are just lowbies, wait till later. Damn near useless. Even need pages to make shitty blues FFS.
Know I'm gonna get crap for saying this, but think about it in terms of WoW professions... Sure, while leveling, say, tailoring, you won't find a lot of stuff that is better than what drops, and it's prohibitively expensive to craft most of the good stuff anyway. But you don't pick up the profession for leveling gear: you pick it up to craft epic, end-game stuff to give you leg up while you gear via dungeon/raid drops.
I'm guessing the BS in D3 will be similar: you might not want to craft gear now, but when you hit 60 and Inferno and can't get past the SK, you'll be happy to be able to craft some gear to help you. Also, you'll be able to "twink" out your newer characters so that leveling will be super fast and easy.
Just my 0.02.

i would choose my own religion and worship my own spirit, but if he ever preached to me i wouldn't want to hear it. i'd drop him, a forgotten god, languishing in shame; and then if i hit stormy seas, i'd have myself to blame.
Currently, 1 tic of leveling for me costs 15,000 gold, and 5,000 gold(up to 10,000 gold) worth of sheets of paper. Assuming it stays flat at this, this lil bitch costs near 100,000 gold JUST for this level. Dafuq =(.
Hey i Have about 400+ jars of subtle essence and I think it was rare tooths? I have about 75 of those as I didn't craft once in normal I was just doing it to do it i gues. Should I save these for later for hell or are they only worth while in normal? Does the bs only craft based on level? Or does it also depend on what quality materials you have?
I leveled my black smith through lvl 25, sinking all my gold in it. Then I found the AH. I get much better items there for a fraction of the gold.
I'll probably finish leveling the the BS after my second toon to 60 just to have it done, and the hopes that it will be improved

They serve no purpose in hell. How to help alleviate the gold shortage:
1. Once you have enough crafting mats for a certain difficulty, sell all of your unwanted blues. I would go by the clevel requirement of the item: if it is less than 30, then you would get normal level materials from it. Generally you need the gold more than normal essences.
2. Sell your rares on the gold AH. I've made 400k+ from doing that.
You'll soon realize that pages and books are the real limit on what your artisans can do.

I'd use those mats to make gear for any new characters you make, to help with the entry levels. Otherwise, sell the mats on the AH. When you max out your BS, the mats from Hell and Inferno are what will matter.

(That's also a handy way to use all those leftover mats in normal when you move on to Nightmare/Hell)
Thats a good point. I guess I just thought he would be more useful for leveling.

for everyone except your first character
The vendors sell good items as well...particularly +dmg rings and amulets, and on occasion decent weapons.
