How is experience divided in co-op parties? Is it split equally, or based on the proportion of damage each character does?
I saw on the bestbuy chat that rushing with high level characters won't really work, because the low level character will get greatly diminished XP. Does that scale based on the level difference?
I think it may not exactly be "divided" but just scaled. It gives experience it would in single player, that is it scales with the difference between you and the monster's level. If you are higher, you get proportionally less, and if you are lower, proportionally more.
I thinks means that if there are three idlers in town and you're out fighting, you still only get normal experience.. This is weird though and wonder if anyone knows the answer to this.
A demon in single player gives say... 10xp. Same monster in 4 player game will also give 10xp. Reguardless if you all kill or you kill it solo. All you have to do is be in the area to get xp for a kill. Does not go off how much damage you contributed. Same with drops. All you have to do is be in the area. Xp is not split. Each person would get 10 xp.
No. You don't gain more for being lower level than the monsters.
Monsters will give a base XP, or less depending on your level (and whether you're being boosted).

This is how I understood it, but with scaling based on level difference. For example (numbers made up):
abs(character level - monster level) <= 2 : 100% of experience
abs(character level - monster level) = 3 : 90% of experience
abs(character level - monster level) = 4 : 75% of experience
abs(character level - monster level) = 5 : 50% of experience
... and so on
As far as I know, level of the other players does not matter, but I could be wrong there.

Jay specifically stated that being boosted will severely lower your XP gain.
To clarify, these two factors are mixed up in the question that asked about being rushed through content by a higher-level buddy. The levels of other players is NOT taken into account, only your level and the level of the enemies being killed. For example, if you're level 1 in Act 4 of Hell, you'll likely get 1 exp per kill, regardless of who you're with.
To answer the original question, experience is not changed, effected, boosted, nor split in a party. It is exactly the same as solo play where, again, the only two factors are your hero's level and the monsters' levels.
I may be wrong then about the other player's levels. I do know 100% though that experience is not split or boosted in any way in a multiplayer game (assuming equal levels among all players, still same as solo).

Each difficulty is hard level capped (or should I say 'floored'?). If you're level 1 you cannot enter Nightmare difficulty even if you've been boosted.

Big differences between either of those 3 will likely result in very low XP gain for at least one of the members.

Essentially yes.
Even if you're the correct level to gain XP, if another really high level person is with you, you will get much much less too.
