"So one of the things we focused on for Diablo 3 - and we weren't interested in making super long gruelling levelling up process - what we wanted was, the fun stuff, searching for gear, and fighting against monsters who are challenging. So we created a fourth difficulty that we call Inferno that is ALL
max-level. Max-level for a player is level 60, and so all the monsters at the start of Inferno are level 61, in Act Two they are level 62, in Three and Four they're level 63. And there are items that ONLY drop at level 61, at level 62 and so on; and they're not small number! There's a whole tier of armour in each one."
"So even to be able to play viably in Inferno, you're going to have to play and fight in Hell for a little while, to get your items up to the quality so that you'll be able to fight through. And then to move from Act to Act you'll need to do that. We just wanted to take the idea of what was fun about Diablo, and make it challenging so that it would stay fun, and put the the time investment into more combat and loot-hunting, and less into meaningless time-investment to prove that you're more committed than your friends."
I actually like this, lots of farming will be required to progress slowly through Inferno and even then it's just to be viable and not breeze through.
Does this mean that we will only really farm the last act of Inferno instead of all the acts?
For the absolute best? Most likely.
I am hoping though that the risk/time required for the last act to be farmed will be high enough to almost warrant people sticking to the other acts for awhile.
I love it! Until now I was concerned that we might end up farming Act 4 of Hell mode as end game because Bliz earlier stated that the best gear could drop from that act (although at a lower drop rate).
If it is done right then it will take quite a while to gear up for the next act(s) which will provide an exciting challenge until the next content is released.
I don't agree with everything that Blizzard does, but they are the best in the business when it comes to progression via gearing up. A lot of people say they don't like a "gear grind", but take away that system and you aren't left with anything that motivates me to play long term.
lol, seems I'm the ONLY one a bit skeptical about this.
No one else worried that we'll just farm the last act instead of the whole game, like Blizz originally intended?
If what blizz says is true there won't be much farming going on, i can't remember which interview but he said if people have it on farm they will ramp up the difficulty.
so bottom line is..i could play non hardcore (death results in gold payments for repairing items) and play the hardest mode in the game with all the extras in it
let me get this straight...and someone please verify/correct me....
there is hardcore and non hardcore mode
both will have normal, hell, nightmare and inferno difficulties
permanent death is only possible in hardcore - which could be played on normal, hell, nightmare and inferno difficulties
You progress through each of those difficulty levels to gain levels and get better gear. You don't just choose a difficulty level and starting playing. You have to earn it.

Correct.
Hardcore (you die, that character is deleted)- Normal<nightmare<hell<inferno
Normalcore (you die, and are reincarnated as an exact clone of the character who just died, with all his/her stuff) - Normal<nightmare<hell<inferno
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I grew up gaming without internet forums. The entire phenomenon of being upset with a game developer makes no sense to me. No sense. I cannot imagine spending my time and energy being upset about something I choose to do for recreation.
Honestly I don't mind that the acts are different difficulties with different loot. It's similar to doing Mephistos over Diablo or Baal in D2 because even though he couldn't drop certain items you could run him faster and with less problems.
Did Blizzard say this or...what? Because if they did its a 180 from what they said:
Former:
A1-4 Inferno can all drop the best loot, A1 just has the smallest chance and each act has a higher chance of dropping the best loot. ( A1: 0,0001% , A2: 0,0002% etc etc )
And now this says its:
A1 Will drop x Tier
A2 Will drop superior Tier of A1
etc etc.
Or is it only Tiers and not Rare's and Uniques and what not that have a Act based drop chance?
Because i dont like farming A4 only for the best loot, i want whole Inferno to be avaliable for the best loot and having A4 the highest chance of dropping that ( only a small %, not 2 big imo)
First off, it is Act 3 and 4 - both will have monsters with levels of 63. So not just A4.
As for the "former stance" that you had a low chance of getting the best items from a1 inferno....that still might be possible if champions and rares get +2 to their monster level like they did in D2.
Bashiok said the best items in the game can drop in Hell difficulty. I'm presuming he meant weapons, not armors, though.
Extremely small chance but there is still a chance of stuff dropping from inferno in hell(in the later acts of hell).
This is really old news btw a few weeks old maybe even a month :P.
Read the interview again. This is Jay Wilson saying these gear will ONLY drop in inferno. You have to farm act 1 (specific gear drops here) to progress to act 2 (specific gear drop here) then farm that to progress in act 3/4, Not like previously said by Bashiok who said everything can drop from Hell mode.

Act 3 + Act 4 monsters will both be mlevel 63, so there shouldn't be any difference in drop quality between those two acts.
For the absolute best? Most likely.

Hopefully, we will need the gear from Act 1 and 2 to be able to even make endgame inferno viable.
If it is done right then it will take quite a while to gear up for the next act(s) which will provide an exciting challenge until the next content is released.
