I didn't bother to read all the comments, but where is your link to Blizzard saying they will release no content patches? There was a video posted just yesterday with Alex Mayberry where he confirmed that there WILL be content patches. Also, I've seen numerous blue posts that say everything short of we will be doing many content patches. Jay Wilson himself has said that there will likely be content patches. So I don't know where you got that bit of information.

Replay value comes from the combat itself. Yes, that is plenty.
I've been saying this for a while now. I can see how that may be hard to understand if you're stuck in a D2 mindset of combat still.
Strategy and tactics are far more important (heck, it's enough those 2 things actually EXIST in Diablo now) to combat in D3. Controlling the field and the monsters while keeping your health up takes a lot more now. It's no longer spamming 2 skills and spamming pots.
Take that and add the fact that the areas to farm are larger and more random with events and things. No more single boss runs like D2. You'll be hunting down rare/champ packs and each pack will be an incredible battle where you'll have to devise a strategy to survive. Each pack will be different. Going through packs to get your Nephalem Valor buff up then fighting a boss is going to be much better than D2 farming.
Now add all of that to an increased difficulty when compared to D2 and you'll want to keep playing because the GAMEPLAY is fun, not because you're forced to level again.

Your entire argument falls apart at point 3: "lack of new content"
I remember reading that they will be putting in new and better items over time. That give the economy a constant demand and low/new supply.
I haven't seen anything on this yet, and i really do hope this is true if that is the case. Only thing I've seen are posts stating the only patches will be for bugfixing, balancing, and pvp.
I like how people think that we're gonna cruise past Inferno. I believe Blizzard stated(I'll have to look it up) that Hell in Diablo 3 is harder than Hell in Diablo 2. Granted, Hell in D2 wasn't really super difficult because you could outlevel the content. This isn't the case in D3, which should make Inferno(where the monsters outlevel you) much more difficult and unpredictable.

I hope your right and inferno really is harder than most people expect.
If anything is going to kill replayability it is the fact that you will never need more than 1 of each class thanks to the ease of swapping skills, but then, if you were unable to do so, the community would be in uproar.
Even that, I don't think, is an issue, as you will still have variants created based on a specific band of skills or archtype which will see people re-roll (Melee wizard, no pet witchdoctor) along with trying classic modes like Ironman and Live off the Land.
Personally everyone is getting way ahead of themselves with this end game stuff, i mean hasn't even been launched yet and already people are complaining about ladder resets not being there... did i miss something?
how long after launch was the first D2 ladder reset?
D3 BETA was the most awfull thing, im still waiting for the final game.
By the way Blizzard are losing a lot of quality in gameplay, SCBW was brilliant demanding game that did KOREA the capital of "E-SPORTS" they change the vision of videogames....SC2 its OK too easy even for casual-noob players they still have time to fix this with HOTS or next expansion, Diablo2 was epic with his original colors, gothic STYLE, gore...D3 looks like another OK but not impressed, there are lot of games with that shinny shitty color style,....ppl need to be more demanding with blizz new games, remember one game StarCraft did in SOUTH KOREA...if your pleased with D3 Beta style you are mediocre!! who never playhard D2

The game's economy definitely needs an "item sink" just like there are gold sinks to keep the economy in balance.
Salvaging items will be the only item sink in the game, I just hope it's enough to prevent the market from flooding with powerful items.
RMAH will be the gold sink IMO. They've stated that you can not only sell items for real money, but gold as well. People with an abundance of gold will just sell it on the RMAH.

I think replayability will be in a good place.
I kind of agree with you on that point as well; making a new "dedicated to this spec only" char was part of the fun of D2; especially after you figured out how to level quick.

Diablo 3 is not the first game to not wipe all your hard work away every 3 months
