For some reason this makes me happy - the rune system is a "bit" of disappointment because I really liked the concept of ranks but I can live with what they've got. I'm more happy to know that being able to solo around in inferno will really be a mark of distiniction - I hope they have banner flair for solo kills on boss mobs in inferno - you would know that the char is truly badass and not some twinked noob that got dragged through inferno.

From what they have said about inferno it doesn't seem likely that noobs will be able to get dragged through inferno without serious contributions to the groups.
Since monsters scale with the amount of people in a game, it won't be "harder" to complete Inferno solo than in a group. I'm glad that it's possible to solo it though.
It doesnt scale directly (they've said so - 4 people is not 4x as hard but rather 3.something) and (understandably) the way one char tanks/sponges damage and other distribute damage means even if it did it would still probably be a bit easier to kill boses in a decent (capable) group than solo.
But years into the game there will be people who have aquired such incredible gear/gems and knowledge that they will be able to drag a 2nd idiot/noob/twink through a boss kill - in short there will be people who couldnt fight their way out of a paper bag who will have "finished" inferno - but IF you have killed an inferno boss solo - to me that is the REAL mark of distinction.
Bashiok as other moderators talk about the first play through inferno.
After a short while some people will get one or two legendaries on them (via RAHM for example) and then looking at some legendaries' stats being like 2-3 times better than best crafted items you will be able to find somebody to drag you through inferno with ease. Not to worry.

Much shorter than years as somebody will make it a profitable business or even better, they will go through inferno and then sell their chars to noobs. It will suck but that is business. I think this is one of the reasons why ranks won't exist in D3.
But noobs will always be noobs and you will recognize one just by looking at him playing
Made me happy as well. I remember D2 was kind of a slow grind for me for the first few months. I did have 2 jobs at the time and 3 other roommates that I has to share time with on our 2 phonelines, and 2 computers (was about 6months from broadband.) I can't really remember how long the grind took. I just remember the first real roadblock was duriel. The lightning enchanted mobs were a pain beginning in NM and the Doom Knight things in Hell in Diablo's lair were a pain. With in 6 months though, I was killing Diablo with complete ease and farm mode was beginning to net great gear for alts.
What I remember most was we as a community did not have the knowledge to know what was the best skill template, we didn't have many high levels and no bots doing boss runs. Basically, we didn't know what skills to use, didn't know which gear to get or everything that was out there, and we didn't have high levels with optimal skills and gear to drag us quickly through the lower levels and rush our experience for us. Rushing became much easier after LoD because even if you were too low in the area, the experience was good. Originally, if you were too low to be in an area, your experience gain was very very slow.
I remember, it took me about 9 months to get every piece of gear I needed for my Bowazon. That gave me 3 months of collecting SoJ's before LoD came out.
I do expect this game to be hard. I do believe we'll have a lot of dedicated gamers in Inferno within the first week. I also believe by 3 months in, some groups will be facerolling inferno. Just like D2. The average player that has a life outside gaming, like me back in 2000, will probably start to successfully farm a little sooner than 6 months though. The RMAH and the GAH will allow a slight speed up in how quick the average player gets through inferno. Once the dedicated players have inferno on farm, the inferno gear will start to spread throughout the game slowly, than abit faster, than fairly quickly.
I feel many underestimate the casual gamer. They can be highly skilled, but don't want to waste lots of time playing a game. For that reason alone, I do think many players can and will complete inferno as long as they can have access to the proper gear. D3 will be hard, but not Atari hard.
Relativeness is given but I am afraid their "difficult" is relative to the first play through inferno. It's probably good it won't last forever but I am afraid that with one or two legendaries every noob will be able to easily finish it.

I've got to believe that Blizz employees have twinked chars with a couple inferno legendaries - I also have to believe that if simply finding one or two inferno legendaries is sufficient to turn you from a dud into a stud they will either nerf the legendaries or buff the difficulty more. I'd have to think they want (as a matter of principle) that you need to be almost stacked with inferno legendary gear before you are blissfully rolling areas for the lulz.

but i really hope he speaks the truth, as ive said before i want to be getting my ass kicked ALOT
i want it to be that if you make one mistake your screwed
i know i can speak for everyone over the age of 30 that we want a game that breaks us, makes us scream at monitor in rage cos we just a beating so bad that our nipples jumped out the window
It is probably much better to start thinking slowly about next game as this one won't last further than 2 years after its last expansion.

Aren't we a true believer
Well, I guess that my "optimism" comes from the existance of the difficultly level itself - it's the fourth playthrough, you could probably quote the dialogue by now if you had to - if they wanted everyone to get warm and fuzzy feelings from crushing the highest level of difficulty they would have stopped at "Hell" and made sure that by about 1/2 way through the level you'd be swimming in such uber gear that curb stomping Diablo would be taken for granted.
I think the whole concept of inferno was "So you think you're gonna solo OUR game in /players 8 do ya? Well here, eat THIS!" It's the level for masochists and the social life deprived. Anything less than that will be utter disappointment....

They want you to feel squishy till you buy legendaries on AH so they can make some money. Then you will feel overpowered and bored so in best case scenario (for blizzard) you will switch to play another character so you can buy new legendaries for him/her. And so on.

I think we all would like that but 2 holes in your theory. 1st)People can buy gear within the game. Diablo2 was a game of trades, this will be a game of RMAH. Time= Money and Money = Time. You only need one or the other. Most of us will use a combination of both. 2nd) You will start Inferno in hell gear so you must be able to kill monsters with hell gear in Inferno. Every item of Inferno quality you get in Inferno, will be gravy on your biscuits. Inferno will be more challenging but all Blizzard did was turn a 75 yard hurdles dash into a 100 yard hurdles dash with the last 25 yards adding some hurdles. D3 will be a slightly more challenging, slightly longer race than D2. However, todays athletes are better equiped to race due to more scientific training.
Thing about a business is you want as many customers as possible, and in many cases that means appealing to the Diablo equivalent of WoW keyboard turners. It might be hard at the moment, but they will bitch and cry about how it's too hard and Blizzard will make it easier with some quote involving the words "We want everyone to experience everything the game has to offer" and such.

While I don't think that will end up happening, I can allow for the possibility of that being true for normal characters. I do believe that once they establish the proper difficulty of Inferno, Hardcore mode will never reduce the difficulty bar.
I.E. If they do nerf regular, they won't nerf Hardcore. (Allowing for difficulty adjustments early in the game's release)
Much shorter than years as somebody will make it a profitable business or even better, they will go through inferno and then sell their chars to noobs. It will suck but that is business. I think this is one of the reasons why ranks won't exist in D3.

Well it will cost the price of an account to sell your chars, since they are account-bound. That'll probably cut down on the number of people doing it.
Except after release they're planning on authorizing selling characters on the AHs
The difficulty will also come down to how the individual player chooses to play. Several people have mentioned the possibility of facerolling Inferno after buying some top legendaries from the RMAH/GAH, and while I doubt Inferno will be that easy, not everyone is going to rush gear their character like that. Especially not me.
I want to feel that Inferno is an achievement to get to, and a bigger accomplishment to start progressing through. Part of the fun for me is farming and grinding for gear, and for the first few times I'm there I'll feel like I'm cheating if I buy items to make it easier. I know it's not, but that's just my perspective.
I want Inferno to be hard and I want it to take average players time to tackle well. Since Inferno is the 'endgame' it would shorten the life span of the game if you could finish it easily, so I see it as counter productive from Blizzard to make it too easy for people. You'll always have people complaining it's too easy/too hard, but that's to be expected with a player base that will be in the millions.
It is about inferno being difficult for all and not just you. I don't want to have just a feel of accomplishment but also a feel of superiority (though I probably won't feel that). If I was to think like you I could make probably even normal difficult, by not changing gear at all. The best feelings comes from comparison to others. Unless you play hardcore where are better things to feel, like adrenaline for example.
