I feel sorry for the people who aren't mature enough to pick the gender that simply looks better.
was that a dig at me? hehe
ill prob get sick of the F Barb after a bit, eps if she grunts like a tennis player
but other than that its pretty what i want to look at cos of the job in hand
No it wasn't a dig at you, you're playing what you want because you like the looks, which is fine. My comment was a dig at the people who feel they have to play a male character if they're male otherwise they're "weird" or "gay", which is childish and stupid in my eyes.

The question isn't why do I kill. The question is, why I don't kill everybody.
I'm a male and I always choose a female character to play if given a choice Even if they are just pixels on a monitor, I'd rather stare at something pretty for all that time lol.
Although I have been playing through the beta with both sexes for each class.
Depending on the character would depend on the gender. I don't know if this is just a coincidence or not but I like the genders that blizz had them in the announcement videos ( demon hunter female, wizard female, monk male , barb male, witch doctor male). I was at one point thinking about a female monk but the male one fits that little bit more.
Not to mention you'll be under so much armor anyway you would not really be able to see gender.
I almost always choose a female character when I have the choice, simply because I am female and would feel rather strange playing a male character. The lone exception for me so far is my male DH, but I don't really feel happy playing him. I haven't decided yet, though, on whether to convert him or not.

Why would it be strange? Diablo is a fantasy game, your toon isn't a representation of your real life self, unless you're actually a Barbarian, Witch Doctor or [insert class here] IRL.

Wow, I totally forgot that this gender choice problem even existed. By the way one of my close friends is gay and he plays male characters all the time. The last one was in swtor - a beardy smuggler flirting with every nice female we encountered. I started to jest about that and he said to f**k off 'cause his smuggler is totally hetero. In a friendly manner of course, we had a good laugh. So I'd say people just shouldn't make problems out of nothing. Those are my feelings on the matter of course. Oh, and my gf played a male blood elf tank in wow for three years. My main was male tauren druid, but I had a favourite female belf toon. I hope what I said here will be somewhat entertaining, I don't want some flaming to start or something.
I'm male and I'll be playing:
male Monk Female monk looks so nice! but I just feel it's not what I want. I want mobs to experience some manly fisting action
female DH Male DH looks like an anorexic emo-teenager =) Not so bad, but he's too skinny for me.
male WD I'm scared of female WD, I'm sure something bad happens if you play her! She'll crawl out of your pc or somethig.
undecided Wiz I guess it will be male after all, though I won't play wiz heavily, 'cause all the best gear I find I'll be giving to my friend first (not gay, the other one).
female Barb named Snusnu That's terribly unoriginal, but I will enjoy sooo much playing her

If I tried to be a WD in real life... I think the term for it would actually be "quack".
Anyway, it doesn't matter if a game is fantasy or not. I do see my creations as something of an extension of myself. It may be the casual role-player in me, but if I'm a gal then... all my toons need to be a gal.
I've made up my mind on the DH, also. Going to delete him and create a female version.
Either you see your character as a representation of yourself or you have zero personal stake in your character. Being the latter I will be playing some female characters. I usually choose sex based on the classes play style. After playing the beta I have changed my mind on two sexes of my characters though. The female monks voice was just too annoying for me to get over and I just couldn't handle the overall feel of playing a male demon hunter. I will be rolling with
Male barbarian
Female demon hunter
Male monk
Male witch doctor
Female wizard
Wizard will likely be my main character although I am considering switching to a monk. I enjoyed the monk far more in the beta then I expected.
I'd have to go mostly male as part of the self extension thing, but also, I live in a world where there are an EXTREMELY limited number of physically powerful females. (not talking about money or politics, don't flame) I'm a pretty solidly sized guy, and I just have a harder time imagining female barbs and monks even coming close to their male counterparts in terms of smash and ouch.
On a related note, I'm not a fan of most female kung fu characters in movies.
I will likely play a female wiz though.
PS. I will pretty much never seriously play as the DH, as I loathe pretty much everything about the character. Personal preference.
I typically pick gender depending on the class - as in what I think fits best together.
Then again, I plan to have 5 SC and 5 HC chars down the road - if the game ends up being any good of course - so no need to choose!
Never understood how people can see their characters as extensions of themselves. For me it is some pixels on a screen. Which I change around for the sake of variety.
First character for me will be a female demon hunter or wizard.
If i get bored, I'll probably end up doing a monk or barbarian to try out melee.
If I make characters beyond those 2, it will be to check the voice acting on a quick run through normal. For that, I might end up playing some male characters. Maybe the guy who does the male demon hunter is the next David Hayter or something. LOL! (Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid) I was a major fan.
Edit: My second character, (the monk or barbarian) would also be female. I forgot to say originally.
When I played WoW, we had a saying MMORPG is a short for Many Man Online Role Playing Girls
Female, either Wiz or DH.
Male - Barbarian.
I personally dont see an issue about genders in game - its not YOU in the game, its just a char in a virtual world. When I first started playing MMO, I also played only males, but after a while I realized the simple truth above, and another truth - if you have to watch some butt in the game 24/7, it better be sexy female butt
Sucks that you cant immerse youself in the game. Would be a lot more fun if you could.
I'm male and I always create male characters if I'm given the choice. They do call them avatars, so the way I see it, the character I'm playing is a reflection of myself.
I know some people say that if they're going to be starring at something, at least make it something pretty. Well, I rarely if ever stare at my character, I'm usually focused on the action. The only time I look at my character is if I'm inspecting my armor, in which case I think to myself "damn, that looks bad-ass" and then I get on with the game.
Also, in games where ther are relationship options, I prefer having a male character so I can explore the relationship storyline in the game. If I play a female, then I need to woo a male npc and that just freaks me out.

The Tomb Raider designer said almost exactly the same thing back in ancient times, except he said "bum". I'll not get into why I remember, because it just ends up being to philisophical. LOL!

I think imersion is really important. I want my game characters to represent... me. When I was about 12, my amazing story teller cousin pulled me and my brother into some D and D games, and sort of 'being' the chraracter and getting imersed in the story was what made it fun. That stayed with me and I tend to want that immserive feel in games. So my primary characters tend to be things I could imagine actually wanting to be.
Character list in order of being played:
Witch Doctor: Male
Monk: Female
Wizard: Female
Barbarian: Male
Demon Hunter: Female

My place really was here. I was too foolish and stubborn to notice. But, what I truly hoped for then was here. Why do I always realize it When I've already lost it.
