Man, people really like to find things to complain about.
I'd like to see what they would say if Blizzard showed anything like any of the other game trailers they saw tonight. Diablo 3 was BY FAR the most impressive, not even remotely close.
I also don't get why 'the weird ass art style wasn't in Diablo and Diablo 2!!!1!!!' is at all relevant. Note to people who play video games: not every game is going to be the exact same.
The only people who find this introduction impressive simply haven't been playing Diablo for 17 years.
thats a rather bad thing to say.
You have to keep in mind, thats not what opening cinematics are anymore. Its been 10 years. They are now or catching your eye, for maken you go... -wow-.
They now have technology to tell you the story IN GAME, WHILE you play, they dont need to do it here anymore, so they can make it for pure eyecandy... thats what people dont get. Its better to tell story in-game.
You couldnt make good looking ingame areas for storytelling like you can now.
Except this has never been the case with Blizzard games. Blizzard games ALWAYS had amazing set piece cinematics after each chapter. Starcraft did this really well, Warcraft 3 did a fantastic job with their chapter cinematics, Diablo 2 was another masterpiece with their cinematics.
I couldn't wait to finish a chapter or scenario just to see the full CGI cinematic at the end. It was always a treat.
I hate the cheap route of telling the story "in game". The intro cinematic should do exaclty that, introduce us to this instalment of the franchise. Compared to the previous 2 games in the series, the intro to Diablo 3 is really dull. It even had some kinda weird heavy metal type music during the 2D page cut out angels and demons war bit. Not impressed.

exactly. Games need to change.
And the art style is going to go great with the book of cain =P

That "technology" as you say isn't a wow factor anymore. No ones wowed by special effects. Entire movies are produced without actors now and on low budgets. You have to have a compelling story and a point of reference to become engaged in what's being shown to you.
Not to mention that has NOTHING to do with the first 30 or whatever seconds of that insane weird ass artstyle that looks NOTHING like Diablo and it doesn't remind me of ANY of the past Diablo games at all. I have no idea what I was watching and if it hadn't been for the hooded angels I would've been very confused. I have no idea where that art style came from as a past Diablo player. Ultimately, the intro feels nothing like Diablo.
It's obviously done in the same fashion as the art in the Book of Cain, which is the book you see cain reading and scribbling through. The intro is his "prophecy" that he's deciphering. You see what I'm saying?
1. Did the intro tell you what the book of cain was, or is that outside knowledge?
2. Does the intro tell you anything about a prophecy?
3. As someone who's never played Diablo before (this is an INTRODUCTION), who is Cain?
4. What does his prophecy have to do with Diablo 3, considering for the past two games we've already been fighting and killing the Lord of Terror himself?
5. Saying "you see what I'm saying" while using extraneous amounts of outside information to prove a point about an "introduction" video makes you come off as fanboyish and overly defensive of something that's good to you only because you are already introduced to the game and are not looking at this intro as stand alone.

Why did we need to be shown that? More importantly, would anyone have any idea what the hell was going on if not for their prior knowledge that Diablo is about Angels and Demons in the first place? Do you see what I'm saying? It was worthless footage and the art style was NOT anything relevant to anything I've seen in past Diablo games.
I don't mean to sound mean... but:
The narrator (Cain) is reading about an army of shadow and an army of light battling while they show demonic creatures crawling out of the ground and winged creatures coming from the heavens...
If people cannot figure out that angels and demons are fighting after hearing/seeing that, then they are stupid as hell.

Because they are not Blizzard North.
They took the game from past developers.
If they are going to do that, CHANGING AROUND TONS OF fundamental styles is NOT the way to go. You want Diablo 3, or NEW GAME 1?

Well, I believe this style is part of tying the whole Diablo 3 marketing together with The Book of Cain that is coming out soon. The trailer starts with Cain talking about prophecies, and these are meant to be his collections and drawings of the history of Sanctuary and the ongoing war between Heaven and Hell.
As far as your previous comments about setting the player up for the game, I don't see how either of the previous 2 Diablo cinematics did any more than this one. Yes they are both awesome and set up the whole story, but you can't exactly gather your role in the game from those either. The first thing you are told to do in this game is to go to the cathedral and find out what happened/what crashed into it, and this cinematic sets up that mystery. I'm not saying it was the greatest cinematic ever, but it still sets up the story and your eventual role in it.

I would highly suggest you don't play Diablo 3 then. Because we've been told it's insanely similar and faithful to Diablo 2.
With that being said, this Cinematic ISN'T.

Then you have not been paying attention to news, they already said they would be useing some of that art style throughout the full game, so you might want to get use to it.
Thats too bad, i was looking forward to the Full CGI part of Full CGI Cinematic. Blizzard does them better than anyone. Not a big fan of the sketches in cains book comes to life in what looks like cardboard cut outs fighting in 3D.

But we still get them, We get both, which is great. But point being, is this style is going to fit in very well with the game. We have not got to sit into the deep world of it yet, so we cant say just how well it will or will not fit at the end.

This thread is quickly turning one more time in a rage for nostalgia and people not liking it trying to convince people that did (and the other way around). I'm out of this one, it's completly worthless.

I also was abit disappointed with the intro but to be fair I rewatched the diablo 2 one and it also didn't really explain the overall story much.
D2 just has marius going crazy until the dark wanderer came and burned down the inn and Marius following afterwards.
D3 has Cain saying the end times are coming and the first sign will appear in the heavens with "Justice" falling upon the world in his narration mode cinematic sequence. It then proceeds to show the falling star (Angel of Justice Tyreal) and Cain dropping in the crater.
Seems both D2 and D3 setup the start of each game the same way. I just wish they had more recap of previous events including the destruction of the worldstone, etc... Instead of straight into the new plot.
Diablo 3 IS a new game, I dont want diablo 2, I beat diablo 2 10 years ago.
This.
If you want the exact same thing, then just play Diablo 2.
????
How does people wanting Blizzard to use full CGI cinematics as opposed to sketch book style (which has been done in countless games) have ANYTHING to do with wanting to play Diablo 2 again?
I would highly suggest you don't play Diablo 3 then. Because we've been told it's insanely similar and faithful to Diablo 2.

But we already know its not,
SPells are different,
runes are new
Dynamic playthroughs
inferno
while keeping at the heart and soul of the playstyle.
It is dibalo 3, a new game.
I'm not complaining about the game at all. I'm pissed off about the lack of effort presented in their cardboard cutout introduction and some super model girl in 80's hipster clothes going UNCLE?!

They have also said, multiple times, that they wanted to do a better job of telling the story in the game. Have you played or watched any of the better footage? You find out a lot about Leah and the town right away. They are letting you discover things as the player as opposed to just laying everything out before you meet everyone in the game.
This is how picky you are, I'll give you an example of what you'd be saying if the cinematic was exactly like Diablo 2:

Now your just starting to make crap up.
Nothing about that is a lack of effort, the amount of work it would have taken to do that CGI, and that amazing artwork style they did is nothing short of a crap load of work.
Just becuase its not a style, or does not tell a story you like (which yes you are allowed to have that opinion even if I greatly disagree with you) You CAN NOT say that was a lack of effort...thats just insulting.
