So, I've noticed something that's been mentioned at Blizzcon more than once. I found one video where it's mentioned again, so skip to the 20:50 mark to see for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3NkFxpb4hI
Alright, Jay Wilson mentions that each week you will receive a certain number of free listings. I know there are some people who are extremely peeved at the fact that Blizzard will be making a small amount of money through the RMAH. Is this in response to that.
I don't know if I'm understanding what he meant by it wrong, but this is how I see it:
Per week you will have 5 free slots (for example) to place items up for auction, which Blizzard wont be charging extra for (i.e. they wont be taking a cut). For each item over 5, Blizzard will start charging an extra fee, thus make an extra bit of money.
I find it understandable, because I mean, they still need to run the service. Also, they don't want people spamming the RMAH with hundreds upon thousands of items, most of which would be trash, since a lot of people would be quite eager to make bucket loads of money through playing Diablo 3. Probably under the misconception that hey can make a living off of it, something I'm sure Blizzard doesn't want to happen.
Am I understanding this right? Or did he mean something else by what he said. Because this is quite big, if you think about it.
When you put an item up on the auction house there's a deposit fee for it, but the first 5 (for example) times you put something up, that deposit fee is waived.
If I base it off how WoW's AH works, when you successfully sell an item, you get your deposit back, but the AH takes a percentage of the price the item sold for as their own.
So, I believe Blizzard will still take their cut when the item is sold, and it will be based off a percent of whatever the item sold for, and you get the rest.

Just a guess that it would work the same way.
That isn't how the D3 RMAH works at all.
There are two fees: a listing fee, and a selling fee (only if item sells successfully.) Neither of these are refunded. The fees are also flat and do not raise with the value of the item. If you try to draw the money out to Paypal or such, *then* you get hit with an additional % fee. But if you leave it in Blizzard's system as e-balance (to spend on Blizzard products or future D3 trades) there is no such cost.
Not clear to me if only the first X listing fee is free, or the selling fee as well. In the absence of info though I will assume only the former.
If there were no free listing then players could not use the RMAH until they have real $$ in their accounts simply to cover the listing fees. It's a convenient and crucial inclusion!
I think Blizz is doing a great job with the RMAH. But yes ... they will make a killing. Oh well, more incentive for them to make sure the game is always f-ing amazing.

Assuming the listing fee is free and the selling fee isnt,
What would happen if you listed and sold an item, but the flat sell fee was higher than the what the item sold for? You would owe Blizzard fake money, BlizzBucks. So what then? Would they send you a bill?

While the free listings are good, it does not affect the transaction made when you decide to cash in. Which is the biggest issue I have with the RMAH
Actually I remember from the stream when dev gave an example about cashing out he said something like:
"You can take the $6.50 and put it in your e-balance or you can cash out and have $6.50 on your paypal account."
Now I'm pretty sure that was just a slip of the tongue and he just forgot to mention the paypal transaction fee and not that you'd get the full amount of the sell price.
Thanks for all your answers. I get it a whole lot better now.
I don't understand why people hate the RMAH so much, I really don't. Is it because Blizzard is allowing people to make money from their games? Or is it because Blizzard will be asking a bit extra, asking money from you for making money from from their game, I might add. For all we know the flat rate they will be making would be negligible, $0.20 perhaps.
I really don't mind it at all, because:
1. This is a service they are running, and as with all things in life, if you partake in a service then it will cost you. Nothing is free. And I know we will buy the game, but this is different, this is an actual real money service that you will be able to make money from.
2. I'm pretty sure some of these servers will be loaded with items, and will probably need to be maintained and monitored. That's probably going to cost them.
3. Blizzard has said that post release there will be content updates. Extra items, new quests, and bonus randomization and events. In MMOs they actually charge you monthly to be able to play the updated content, but in Diablo we will be getting the extras for free.
I just hope that the 5 free listings every week are stack-able. So if you don't use them for one week, you get 5 free listings the next week on top of the 5 free listings you didn't use in the first week, and so on. But I doubt it =(.

I don't hate the RMAH at all, and this is pretty much why. If Blizzard can make extra money themselves using the RMAH (not to mention while we're making a bit ourselves) instead of charging me a monthly fee for the game, I'm all for it.
I haven't watching it since yesterday but from the top of my head it sounded like Robert Bridenbecker was saying there is no percentage fee anymore? He said something along the lines of wether it sells for $50 or $100 we will still take the same nominal fee... or something like that. Watch it and correct me if I'm wrong.
Something else worth mentioning is the free listings are set/reset on a weekly basis.
Also Jesse missed the first half hour or so but I'm pretty sure I heard Sixen's voice in there so maybe he can fill us in on some extra details not mentioned in the video.

That would just be bad on the listers fault for not starting above the selling fee.
I highly doubt the listing fee will be very large anyway. If an average of 1k items sell per day with a 10cent selling fee that's still 100 bucks a day. Doesn't include listing fee for people who are beyond the free listings. I'm quite curious how many items blizzard estimates will sell per day.

My guess would be that you would get some kind of error saying something along the lines of "the listing price must be higher than the selling fee". If you already used up your 5 (for example) free listings, you would get something along the lines of "the listing price must be higher than the combined listing and selling fees".

Its a hypothetical question, obviously its not recommended.
Essentially I was insinuating that if they wave the posting fee, chances are they would wave the sell fee as well.
Otherwise, you would have to deal with a situation like above.

A free listing is basically a way for people to make money without ever spending any.
That isn't how the D3 RMAH works at all.
