Anyone else think its lame, sad, and disappointing that followers will only be available in single player mode? I personally played very very little single player in D2. I know the argument is, "You dont need a follower if you play MP, you'll have friends playing with you". I disagree, there have been many times that I've played MP alone, simply doing Diablo and Baal runs MFing. Then someone might argue that you should just play SP then. I disagree again, theres times when I do want to play alone or cant find anyone to play with and DONT want to load up a SP character. I feel like there are ways to allow followers in MP, maybe increase the difficulty of the game for each follower thats tagging along or something?

This really clears things up a bit, thanks Doomscream:
Do Followers feature in PvP or co-op modes?
Followers aren’t in PvP at all, and in cooperative Followers return to town. We found that having four players and four Followers on-screen all at once was pretty chaotic and hard to tell what’s going on. We logic’d out that a player is better than a Follower, they’re better companionship and they’re certainly more effective than a Follower. We figured any player would prefer to have another player, so at that point we decided to have the Follower return to town. You can always get him back later – if the other player leaves the Follower will return.
I just hope that this time (during D3) you'll have better luck with multiplayer. So you won't feel so lonely and stuff.
In contrast to you I have never played multiplayer, so this system will be very useful to me (seeing that Followers will be different from Mercs).
Well, let's see what happens when the game actually releases. Maybe you'll find some salvation.
I think you are misunderstanding how this works (or maybe it's me, in that case i agree with you). As i understood it you will have mercenary whenever you are in the game alone. In case someone joins game mercenary despawns, when they leave mercenary comes again.

If you happen to play just by yourself and a friend of yours joins your game then the follower goes back to town.
Awesome, thats good news and something I can deal with. I think I agree that it does get chaotic with so much shit on the screen at once. Thanks for that find!
Snoozefest. I realize there are players uninterested in online play, but they're a minority and I hate that they created such a cool system that many of us will never use. Feels like a gigantic waste of time to implement this as SP only. Big waste.
I read the posts above, my sentiments apply either way. I'd imagine if someone is on Bnet their primary focus is not sitting in private games forever by themselves. I repeat: whatever manpower was used on such a narrow feature was wasted on this. Cool system, but after maybe the initial playthrough, few people will ever see it again.

Considering you can still use the followers in a MP game when its ONLY you in the game, I can see myself getting some use out of the follower system for sure.
Considering how popular D3 will be, we can safely assume, for years, you think that you'll ever be alone in your MP game for more than a few minutes at most? You really dig you'll have that follower while you sit in town buying a potion or to help you in your first two kills until someone joins and POOF the follower is gone again? That's going to be a system you're interested in checking out, i.e., you'll feel really invested in keeping your Follower equipped / etc. just for that? Maybe at first because it's new and novel, but after those first few games they're going to feel completely pointless to most players.
I don't mind so much. It's something fun for when you're playing by yourself. Your friends aren't going to be online all the time and sometimes it's fun to go at your own pace. You'll absorb the story better by yourself anyway.
I agree it is kind of lame but Blizzard has their reasoning to back it up.

I could see myself creating a password protected gamed to do some solo MFing, and thats when I could get some use out of a follower.
I know i very often find myself playing private games to do some mf. The system is exceptionally cool for that (especially if the Scoundrel abilities do what i think they do).
Now, i also don't like playing with people i don't know much (either from the forum or real life and their friends). In such cases i play solo. Again, the system would be very useful in that case too.
Btw, Kiserai, it's like saying "the people that designed the StarCraft II campaign were wasted manpower, cuase more are playing multiplayer". They absolutely did an awesome job. Blizzard likes to give a person options. Sure, playing with others will be more fun (the AI could never be as good as a real person) but those who want to play solo, will not have the feeling they're alone (unless they want to).
Why would anyone solo MF in D3? You get your own drops either way, playing in a solo game is actually the worst way to MF, assumably.
The comparison to SC2 is a false analogy of the worst order; the SP in SC2 is an entirely different game even conceptually not to mention mechanically than the MP; the differences between SC2 and D3 are obvious. I'm sorry but your metaphor doesn't hold. I actually thought someone might attempt to draw this conclusion and I wondered if I should have stated this already, but I didn't think anyone would actually do so, because it makes no sense to.

I'm on the same page as Kiserai - my gut feeling is that the Follower system will be greatly underused by most players. And the core to that is the loot system. If you get your own loot and don't have to run around trying to grab everything you can find - then why wouldn't you do MP? Your chances of actually getting through all the best content in a game to find items and surviving are much higher. You have better access to more drops, via trading with other players as the loot falls. There is no reason to go off on your own, except for the novelty of it (coming from a MF'ing perspective). Now, I'm sure all of us will solo a time or thousand because of random quest chances, special dungeons that we want the glory for our own, achievements etc. The Follower will be very useful in this.
I understand why Blizz did this and in some ways I support it. Going on a Baal run with 8 mercs doing everything became pointless and boring. I'm okay with the system, I just feel (like Kiserai) that its not going to get the time and justice it deserves.

I believe it is quite obvious to anybody that D3 and SC2 are two very different games.
An analogy is not supposed to replicate all features of the original idea, which makes comparison to SC2 perfectly viable in this situation since the point that was being linked between them was that of a lesser-used aspect of the game(but which still holds its merits).
The point is the system is still part of the game though you won't use it all the time, meaning that it won't go to waste, just like SC2 campaign.
Now on your point, Polrayne, while i agree that ninja looting won't be an issue in Diablo 3, i think that solo mfing could be just as good as coop mfing. While less items drop, in matters of efficiency and speed solo mfing has an advantage. Simply because nobody has to drag anyone around.
I will definitely be playing alone online for at least the first playthrough of the game since I am going to want to experience all the lore and backstories that are offered in the game. It is annoying for another player to have to wait for me to do this, however. So I will at least get to use the follower during this period. After that, I will have to see if I like playing with other people more than alone. I am hoping people are not too irritating and the multiplayer is more enjoyable.
With the new News thread already discussing the Followers and the use of them in SP here, I think it best to redirect any further posts there. Thread closed.
