I remember seeing this on the stream and after the crowd reaction wasn't sure if it was a joke or not. I forget if keys were even part of the goodie bag last year. Thought it wasn't.

Correct - they have given out beta key opportunities in the goodie bag before, but last year it was just a code for the in-game WoW Deathy pet/StarCraft II Murloc Marine. The 1000 D3 Beta key announcement was separate.
The winners of the keys have not been announced yet. Once beta begins, the 1,000 winners will have the beta available through their Battle.net accounts. They will also receive an E-Mail notifying them.
On a side note: please remember that all people who get into the beta will have it available through their Battle.net account. You will not have to supply any account info with Blizzard to receive your key. If you get an E-Mail from "Blizzard" saying you have been selected for beta but they need your account name, password, and security question, it is a fraudulent E-Mail. Blizzard will never ask you for this information.

Ah. I wasn't sure about that whole thing. The crowd's reaction was less than stellar. Kind of ma fun way to change it up but maybe not the best moment to announce it. /shrug
Yes it was true. For Starcraft 2 they gave every attendee a beta key, so people were angry when Blizzard announced only a small portion of attendees would get a D3 beta key. A lot of people previously bought tickets largely because of the guaranteed beta key.
Yeah, it was a very poor gesture from Blizzard but the good news for us is the less they gave out there at Blizzcon the more chance we have of getting one.

Haha. Hadn't looked at it that way.
